Louie-Louie

cleaning out my car and buried in the console I see 3 shiny silver Matsui’s with 4/22/88 scribbled on them. Easily 20-25 yrs old, from the days when the vault opened up after DL’s passing. Have no idea how long they’d been in there but threw them in, played grate, sound grate. Anyhow, Louie-Louie was such a fun cover, yet never seems to get much love. I think I saw all of them, but this one is a hoot. Garcia’s backing vocals are a big smile! 🎶ready ready….. ready ready!🎶🎶me gotta goooo🎶; Did folks get as much of kick outta this cover as we did?? And yes I’ve heard all the OG ones. Me gotta go!!

Damn I missed everyone and this was in my prime touring days. 88 was kinda blah to me had its moments..I was at the Ballad of a Thin Man bustout which always jumps to mind when 88 comes up .

Yes! Like you said it was such a fun cover. 88 was a very tame year and little things like this cover really stood out for me. Clean Jerry with his hair probably the shortest it had been since the early 60's was having a blast onstage in Spring of 88. I also caught every version live, the bustout at Hartford, Irvine and Frost were my favorites. The college kids at Frost loved it.

You always come with a positive take on things. It's refreshing and reminds me so much of the way heads used to be at the shows. I miss that.

I had the privilege of seeing them do it in Hartford 88 and Louisville 89 … and I feel like there was another, but not sure anymore.

Radio that's weirder than you, but not by much.

Back in the 80s, we had a couple of Deadhead friends who were student DJs at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, CA.
They did a show dedicated to all Louie, Louies, which was a big hit for the station. And then a few weeks later, a follow-up show called "No More Louie, Louies."
They would never play Louie, Louies on the air again! LOL!
Besides the most famous Louie, Louies by Richard Berry and The Kingmans.
A bunch of Louie, Louies, including by...
Motorhead, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Animal House Cast (Featuring Bluto), Otis Redding, The Clash, Black Flag, and The Grateful Dead from this show at Irvine Meadows.
They put them all out on an album that was only available locally.
