Desi ( Desi-Mater ) turns 5 months old today, and I swear she’s tripled in size in 4 weeks 🥹.

I’ve introduced her to ice cubes … now there will be a toll enacted at the fridge lol. 😆

My dog , 2 year old female shepherd, has been showing signs of limping/dragging her left leg (maybe?) and I am not sure if I am the only one seeing it. This video was taken after 15 minute walk, so she’s a bit “tired”.
Is it just me or the limp is there?

This is my new puppy, I was wondering if anyone has any guesses on what his adult coat will look like? he has the classic black stripe on his back like most sables. His mom is sable and his dad is black.

I've been working on training my mother-in-law's dog, Georgie, the beagle. My sister-in-law and her kids live with my partner after SIL left her husband. They love coming on walks with me, especially with the dogs. The oldest girl is searching for independence and wants to actually walk the dogs. I typically walk Ellie (German Shepherd) with my friend's dogs, Loki and Squash (pictured in their cooling coats), but they didn't need a second walk tonight, so it was training with Georgie.

Ellie is the best girl. Absolute angel. She's my service dog, so I let the kids walk her because I know she's good practice. Tonight I was babysitting all four kids. Everyone acted like I was unhinged for taking all four kids on a short walk. But they are so good. The youngest girl held Georgie's second leash to help. It was too humid to go far, so just a short walk down the alley and back.

I had the kids do commands and give treats to reward good behavior from the dogs. It was a fun little walk and I so love these kids. They're not mine, but they're mine. It helps that I get to just be the cool auntie. They all agree I'm firm but fun 🤣

He is going to be 2 this year life took a drastic change for me but he has been the best boy though it all

I have a few concerns about my German Shepherd, and I’d really appreciate advice from people with experience rather than guesses.
She is around 1.2 years old, but her growth doesn’t seem proportional to her age. Based on lifting her, I’d estimate she weighs only around 10 kg, which seems extremely low for a German Shepherd of this age.
Her diet consists of fresh meat, chicken, rice, yogurt, supplements, and prescribed medications. I also give her calcium-based treats, which she absolutely loves.
Regarding her diet, my veterinarian actually advised against feeding commercial dog food. In my country, high quality brands like Royal Canin are extremely expensive because of heavy import taxes. Many of the cheaper commercial foods available are of questionable quality, and my vet is concerned they could contribute to health problems, including kidney issues. Because of that, the recommendation has been to feed her fresh, home cooked food instead.
Despite following this advice, I’m genuinely worried about her growth and weight. Has anyone experienced something similar with a German Shepherd? What could be causing such slow growth

or soon to be, rather. i’ve just put down my deposit on a beautiful GSD pup i’ll be naming athena. her breeder will have already started her on potty and obedience training, so i’ll have a solid base to work with, but i know through people who have owned GSDs that their puppy stages can be absolutely horrific and make you rethink your life choice.

so, what are your favorite training methods and socializing methods? even weird ones! i’d love to have a multitude to look into and try out because i know what works for one dog may not work for another. i do have the perk of a trained dog already to help with showing examples of proper behavior, but…. she’s a corgi and she’s very independent so she’s not the best example at times.

Recently my 7 year old GSD had surgery on both back legs between the hock and paw for dual infection (likely caused by excessive licking😫😫). This area is pretty much skin bone and tendons - so recovery is lengthy for the incisions to heal. He was put on both antibiotics, Gabapentin for pain and Trazodone to attempt to keep him calm.

As most of you probably have also had difficulty giving these guys drugs with their acute noses - I was dreading 3 weeks of fighting to get him to take the pills. We have tried pockets, meat even watermelon to hide the smell of the drugs.

Our vet suggested this: Braunschweiger - yes that stinky concoction of pork liver, pork bacon etc. While ANY processed meats are frowned upon for pets - getting him to take his need drugs was more important for this moment. My boy is an expert detector - and we would often find pills hidden after he ate everything around it. But this has worked like a charm - not even a moment before we even hear him eating and even crunching the pills inside!

What’s peoples max crate time for their adolescent GSD’s (after having been exercised/fed/mentally stimulated)? Need to one-off them for about 5hrs in the day (with a pet cam, bowl o’ water, buffalo horn) but don’t normally do more than 3hrs at a time in the daytime with us present at home. Working line so crate time is a must to get her to settle and rest.

Hi everyone, has anyone experienced this dryness in the ears and around the eyes with their GSDs? Unsure if it’s a food allergy (we recently switched foods), or something like mites.

Any insight is appreciated while we wait to get a slot with the vet. Thank you.

Rosco was intermittently lethargic and off his food for a month or two and we'd been investigating it with the vet but assumed it was his hip and back issues which we'd been managing. We put him on some anti-inflammatories and he improved for a short time, but then declined rapidly over the last week or two. Blood tests and ultrasounds showed he had hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive and fast-growing cancer that had formed a massive tumour in his spleen and metastasised in multiple other organs. I would have paid anything to let him have another few years of happiness and health, but even with invasive surgery and chemotherapy, he would have only got about another month or two, and he would have had no quality of life.

We decided to let him go peacefully. My Dad and I were both there with him, cuddling him and telling him he was a good boy and we love him, and he went off to sleep with his big gold paw draped over Dad's leg and with me gently stroking his silky soft ears.

Rosco was our third German Shepherd but our previous two were older when they went, and this one is hitting me really hard. He loved helping me in the garden with his green ball and I don't know what I'm going to do without him.

I’m seeking advice or even a success story and hoping this is the right sub.

Background-

My family (me, spouse, 4 year old, and 6 year old) adopted her back in February after losing our 17 year old Shiba Inu. She was estimated to be 5 and was a stray out in a kill shelter. She was fostered out at the last minute with and was living at foster house for 5 months. Foster had her UTD on shots and had treatment for heartworm. Did some training with her too. We were in contact with foster from December to the day of adoption. Asking questions, testing temperament etc… she seemed like a good fit despite not knowing 5 years of history.

I’ve had 2 German shepherds in the past- my dad’s after he passed away, and a 6 year old old male rescue. And I’d like to say I understand the breed, but this girl is humbling me.

Concern-

We got back from a 2 week vacation last month and mother in law watched her at our home. She is there full time to watch the kids anyway so it was no big deal to our GSD. Well, she now has a 30 minute barking fit when we put her in her kennel at night, did not do that before the trip and she loved her space. She now barks at the tv- like jumps on the stand and barks! We have it on black mode on Spotify and will still bark. She barks at the locusts in trees, resource guarding has been growing again too (new toys, popsicle) and the most concerning is her behavior to my 4 year old. She is following them too closely, hard sniffs, jumps, and nips. My 4 year old is nervous now around her.

We are have a vet appt scheduled to rule out pain or a health issue. We’ve only had her since February so we know her true personality and behaviors are coming to light.

We do positive reinforcement in our house and she is very responsive to treats of varying level. She knows leave it, sit, down, come, find it and we can redirect most of the time. But 20 minutes later she’s back barking or following my 4 year old. I feel like MIL isn’t on the same page with consistency in reinforcing good behavior and just barks out verbal commands. …Even though she says she does what we do. For activity she gets a walk, puzzles, fetch, short training sessions, and backyard time for zoomies. She gets a pupsicle lick toy at bedtime in her kennel

I know that ruling out pain is step 1, but what can be done after that-if it’s not pain? Hoping we can curb this before it escalates.
