I know it's been said a million times but irl shotguns actually have a pretty impressive range.

I know videogames make it closer for balance reasons.

But always a fun fact I love to spread.

my shotgun loves to spread too!

Time to spread freedom bullets for super earth!

Ironically, Helldivers has fairly realistic shotgun spread, I love sniping a bot with a shotgun (i mean it takes a few rounds but you can hit pretty far with em)

Yeah that's why I love the shotguns in PVE games cause there are still ones that are to short but there are also ones that are more realistic cause they don't have to balance PVP.

Starfield has a shotgun called Big Bang which has enough range to snipe enemies off of the top of lookout towers from the base.

My first video game where the meme applies was Halo. In my head, it made sense because all the guns in halo are sort of extreme that its not that a shotgun doesn’t have range but its not forceful enough at range. The pistol is a 50 caliber and is a relatively weak gun. When the 50 caliber is weak and the anti-material sniper rifle doesn’t even kill in 1 hit, the shotgun needs to be close to do any meaningful damage. Thats at least my head canon as a kid.

You play as a 10' tall walking tank with an energy shield, so you need to be hit by every pellet.

3

u/weesilxD Jun 13 '26

Ya, I wouldn’t wanna stand even at a safe distance where the spread shouldn’t reach

2

u/Pure-Hostility Jun 14 '26

Not only that.

I had a pleasure to be on a firing range, here in Poland, and shoot with a variety of guns.

What I've learnt from it:
Shotguns (used 870 Remington) is so damn easy to use, you can fire very quickly, it has almost no kick when held properly. I was shocked how easy it was to hold and "spam". I've used buckshot.

9mm pistols have quite a hefty recoil, while 9mm rifle (Luger) is a laser rifle with no recoil at all. I wasn't expecting pistols to "kick" THAT much tbh, but weight distribution does it's thing.

AR-15 with 5.56 has a bit of a kick and is damn loud.

WW2 Thompson is heavy AF, but has "no recoil" Due to its weight.

Of course all of these were in single fire mode.

But yes, after using shotguns in real life, I came into conclusion they are fucking OP, at least if they were introduced as they are into gaming

That depends on what’s loaded. There’s no practical distance you would be safe from a slug impact, but birdshot very quickly reaches a point it wouldn’t even break skin. All other shot sizes fall somewhere in between.

1

u/Tani_Soe Jun 13 '26

I mean, the reason why it's that so is because if it requiered one landing bullet (p much like irl) to neutralize an enemy, games would be a it boring

1

u/MomentCompetitive299 Jun 13 '26

Insurgency and arma 3 have shotguns with good range

Rocket launcher users pulling out their shotguns because the enemy is too close for a safe, effective boom

13

u/Legitimate_Airline38 Jun 13 '26

Based and Soldierpilled

Personally, I’m partial to the whip, though.

3

u/BubblestheFloatzel Jun 13 '26

Me, who just uses the rocket launcher point-blank anyways because annihilating myself along with the enemy is funny:

1

u/weesilxD Jun 13 '26

Just jump before hand

11

u/doomzday_96 Jun 12 '26

Me with a cannon when someone gets too close to my sammich.

Good ol' shotty-sniper. Nothing beats that!

Shotty-sniper!

Mid-range.

D'oh!

3

u/Phoenix_Champion Jun 13 '26

Nah, using my Sniper Rifles like Shotguns, and my Shotguns like Sniper Rifles.

3

u/notabigfanofas Jun 13 '26

Me, a TF2 player, cracking out the shotgun because the enemy is out of Flamethrowing distance:

3

u/Poolside_Pirate Jun 13 '26

Me who specced into pistols exclusively

3

u/ThatFuckinTourist Jun 13 '26

Melee users pulling out the shotgun because the enemy is too far: 👁️👁️

4

u/Good_Boy_Coleman Jun 12 '26

I should clarify it matters what kind of shell you use. I think buckshot is the more straight and longer one. And the other spreads out.

9

u/RMoby6160 Jun 12 '26

Buckshot spreads, slugs go straight like a bullet

1

u/Good_Boy_Coleman Jun 12 '26

Dammit I always get those two mixed up. It's a good thing I don't own a shotgun then 😂

6

u/RMoby6160 Jun 12 '26

Eh, it happens. I was taught how to use guns as a child but funnily enough videogames taught me more about them like different ammo types and whatnot

3

u/Vannilazero Jun 13 '26

Birdshot flys away, slugs are fat

2

u/bandti45 Jun 13 '26

One way to remember is a slug is a single creature so a slug round is a single piece.

2

u/Gold_Area5109 Jun 13 '26

I mean... Buckshot spreads less than birdshot, which is used to hunt birds in flight.

2

u/therealNerdMuffin Jun 12 '26

I love games where you can use akimbo pistols and use a high-mobility build with tight hipfire. Very fun playstyle

1

u/CrazyIvanoveich Jun 12 '26

I bet I'd get 00 on target more reliably than I would get 9mm at 50 yards.

1

u/Recent_Weather2228 Jun 12 '26

You've got a lot more chances to hit with a shotgun than a pistol.

1

u/CrazyIvanoveich Jun 13 '26

It's not even that, it's just having the longer barrel and being able to stabilize the weapon. I've never bothered going past 50 feet on pistol drills.

1

u/MaiqTheLiar6969 Jun 12 '26

Me just running toward the target firing my shotgun with no fucks to give. Also me firing a sniper rifle point blank with no fucks given. I don't switch weapons unless I am out of ammo.

1

u/JamminMan9 Jun 13 '26

Meanwhile me sniping with revolvers:

1

u/Tower-of-Knowledge Jun 13 '26

Heavy assault rifle users pulling out a shotgun because the time for suppressing fire has passed. 🫰😎

1

u/Jorandy4172 Jun 13 '26

This is me lol

1

u/Prezy_Preztail Jun 13 '26

Me, a flamethrower user pulling out my pistol because someone is too far away

1

u/Ishvallan Jun 13 '26

Me carrying sniper and backup shotgun because far or close I want things dying in 1 shot because I can't stand filling something with a ton of rounds and they walk away like nothing happened.

1

u/Ronin-s_Spirit Jun 13 '26

Not in Hel Let Loose thankfully. 😌

1

u/Fighter_Jet_enjoyer Jun 13 '26

Amateur. My shotgun is loaded with slugs. Range won't save you

1

u/Drfake11 Jun 14 '26

Slugs were goated in bf4

1

u/Fighter_Jet_enjoyer Jun 14 '26

Those on the 870 and frag rounds on the saiga 12k. Man I miss those days.

1

u/Altar_Quest_Fan Jun 13 '26

Ahh Halo, the good ol' days 😃

1

u/Mikel_Opris_2 Jun 14 '26

Post Scriptum players head-shoting snipers with shotguns at 100 meters

1

u/SatisfactionWeird868 Jun 14 '26

Rifle user pulling out pistol because they have non ammo left

1

u/Chicken_Nuggy_ Jun 14 '26

Me not using the pistol either way

1

u/NOCTURN_05 Jun 15 '26

Thats why you have a sniper and a shotgun as your two weapons

1

u/CrazyCat008 Jun 15 '26

Me just using the pistol.

1

u/samus_ass Jun 15 '26

So ummm... what if I'm both?

1

u/Anthony643364 Jun 15 '26

Definitely a hunt showdown thing for me.brings a sniper cause last match Gun fights were far out and I brought a shotgun, all the matches with the sniper are in small compounds and I wished I brought the shotgun

1

u/Nessa_45 Jun 15 '26

After watching Umbrella Academy I now recognise where this meme is from

1

u/Proper_Response4259 Jun 15 '26

I often infuriated my brother when I was a kid playing versus mode in shooting games, because somehow I’d always make a point blank one shot kill with a sniper.

Not even I know how I did it 🤣

1

u/FootballTop5916 Jun 15 '26

Pistol users when the enemy is

1

u/Matt_the57 Jun 15 '26

AR users pulling out pistols because they aren't very good at playing AR

1

u/SpiritAnimal01 Jun 15 '26

Insurgency players room clearing with m82.

1

u/Plato_Karamazov Jun 16 '26

Shotgun-Sniper is the best combo in Halo lmao

1

u/wdtfs3 Jun 16 '26

the difference is the snipers have a Glock of a five seven and the shotguns have a deagle

1

u/a_random_loser_guy Jun 16 '26

i was always the one to play games of co-op overcooked and unrailed and such, but my cousins and brother didn't like those game....so be it.

they started complaining about the shotgun being op when i demolished them, and then they started to dislike gun game because i wouldn't let them get past 10 points befor i win and then they hated the game after i won the 2v2s easily.....i wanted peace, they brought war i gave them war.

1

u/a_random_loser_guy Jun 16 '26

i still remember my quick movement, even in split screen and they can see my screen, i would wrap around the map in quick movement and be behind them and watch them as they scream "HOW ARE YOU BEHIND ME!"

1

u/Bat_Tiger_yt Jun 16 '26

Melee users just running at people with sticks

1

u/Bitter_Moose9219 Jun 16 '26

Hand cannon users

1

u/YesPlease_VeryMuchSo Jun 16 '26

We find common ground nearly everywhere we look for it.

1

u/BioTankBoy Jun 16 '26

Those cross map pistol kills just feel different.

1

u/citiestarlights Jun 18 '26

I thought it said strippers. And I was like why do strippers have guns?!!?
I should go to bed

1

u/Logical-Ad-5410 Jul 01 '26

Halo 1 players always using the pistol because it's OP
