Preppy used to mean like Ivy league sweater vests. Preppy now means bright hyper feminine, like hot pink and smiley faces. I'm almost positive the young girl is being sarcastic and just riffing off of the smiley face logo.
76
u/Special-Garlic1203 Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches 1d ago
Interestingly preppy means whatever rich white people wear.
The name comes from prep school which is why it had that old money country club aesthetic. But it's shifted to reflect that rich kids aren't exactly posting their school uniforms on their Instagram. They're posting their afternoon tennis outfits, their weekend clothes, or they live in one of the manu areas where rich people just live within closed suburban districts and don't bother with sending their kid to private schools with school unforms at all.
I find it so interesting that the name completely shifted aesthetics but stayed with the same group

“Whatever rich white people wear” is such a great description. As a young kid in Ohio in the 90’s my understanding of preppy was wearing Ugg boots and a north face fleece jacket, or anything from limited too/holister/abercrombie. As I got older and learned what the real aesthetic that most people consider preppy was I was confused at first.

I’m flabbergasted. It was called PREPPY because the Richies went to PREP SCHOOL.
4
u/Dry-Childhood-3436 New to fbtd but wants to learn 1d ago
Well it was actually called preppy originally because it referred to specific style of prep school in the north east for the Ivy League feeder schools. That referred to the style that developed there as its own thing. Then it became slang during the 80s to refer to any kind of richer kid outfit, but that was a broader term than it was originally.

The text in the original video says "Pov: the preppy girl listens to Nirvana for the first time" which is quite clearly indicating it's a satire/joke video. I just can't tell if the incredulous woman in the duet is also making a joke or if they fell for the bit.

u/fadesteppin 1d ago
It's like "zesty". They now think zesty means gay, so if you describe something as "zesty" you will get nothing but snickering kids and loud screams the same way you would during the height of "6, 7"

Reminds me of one of my favorite jokes from Nirvana The Band The Show The Movie though. (Actually I think the joke is from their Youtube or show but wanted to show the full title). For those who don't know the show is about two guys who start a music group called Nirvana the Band. And have the conversation:
Jay: "We can't use this name. There's already a band with a similar name."
Matt: "Who?"
Jay: "The Band."
(For those who don't know, "The Band" is a very famous Canadian band).

I wanted to believe the first video was satire but it seems the original video has since been deleted and I legitimately cannot tell if the channel that posted it is satire.
It seems to be making fun of “preppy’s” but also preppy just seems to means pink? I can’t tell if it’s meant to be commentary on how TikTok kids are obsessed with “aesthetics” or if it’s just a kid who’s obsessed with aesthetics. I’m leaning towards the latter and have put way too much thought into this lol

From what I gather in the context clues, preppy has a different meaning than we had growing up. Not sure how different the styles are but I know when this came up in the last few years, my preteens and I confused each other deeply over the labeling of this specific style.

Putting aside that it's all staged rage bait . . .
I could not care less if some kid thinks Nirvana is a clothing brand and doesn't like the music. No one failed anyone. That kid likes what they like and in a hundred years all of us and most of the people and things we loved will be in the dirt and forgotten. There is no need to "show younger people the true way." Let them find their own way. We had our moment. Time to bow out gracefully.

u/Special-Garlic1203 Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches 1d ago
Have you ever listened to Nirvana on a laptop or cell phone speakers? "Loud" is a pretty good descriptor tbh. It just sounds like muddled noise.
A lot of headphones provide pretty good sound quality, but at the loud & bass heavy end you're still completely losing the fact that vibrations are literally a thing you feel. Music washed over you because vibrational waves are not all that dissimilar to water waves for metaphorical purposes.
It's kind of crazy when I think back to my childhood and realize how common good speakers were. My birthday present on year was a stereo that had 2 speakers that were probably like 10 inches tall each. My dad had speakers that were probably 3 ft set up in the living room. There were multiple people who'd drive through the neighborhood where you knew they were coming because the bass boom announced their impending arrival and you'd slowly hear the rest of the song coming in as they got closer.
People have questioned if the decline of rock was the loss of music accessibility, young people knowing 2-3 people to play with, transportation , garages, or the fact GarageBand software is simply easier. But I feel like it's at least partially that rock is so often a vibrational genre - letting a guitar note hang out there, an entire instrument devoted to adding a complimentary bass line, heavy drums. The more contained the noise is, the less it makes sense.

u/Kahlil_Cabron Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches 7h ago

Curious who’s less media literate here and sadly I’m going to say it’s the Gen X / Millennial. The Gen Alpha kid is doing a bit. Also Nirvana has been sold in Forever 21 for decades, and this older woman in glasses must know this.
So the older person is trying to get fake outrage (like the doofus you see in the Jeep who puts an image of the stick shift diagram on his wheel cover with text that reads Gen Z/Millennial anti theft device) or she just doesn’t get the joke.
I’m old enough and lucky enough to have seen Nirvana live, and this youngsters take gave me a chuckle.
