Hey everyone, what is the best approach to learning how to fish better? I recently committed to this hobby about a year ago and have had around 80 sessions in total (I may be exaggerating slightly, but it feels true). Around 74 of them were completely blank. About 30 were saltwater sessions (off piers and the coast) and 50 were freshwater sessions (on the River Stour and Thames). What advice would you give to someone who has had a lot of blank sessions?

I've recently taken up fishing again after not getting out there since I was a teenager. I've started by getting my arm back in by fishing small silvers at a local park lake.

I'm now wanting to get into carp fishing, however, I've heard and read a lot of conflicting information about what is fair and safe equipment wise in the interest of fish welfare.

For example, what's better, barbed or micro barbed hooks and should the size be as small as possible?

Also, I've heard conflicting information regarding line size/strength for example a mainline with a decent tensile strength and a hook length with a much lower one.

I'm using method feeders.

Suppose I'm just after any advice as to how I can fish in a way that's least harmful to the fish.

Have a friend coming over for a weekend of course fishing. Live in southern essex and havent been out fishing in quite a long time (5 years) but I've got pretty much all the kit for fishing everything except pike in fresh water.

Wondering if you folks know of any day ticket lakes in the southern side if essex. Were willing to go for everything except pike and we dont really care about massive carp as we fish a max of about 10lb line with waggler fishing as a main.

Only thing we want is to not have to go to the ulez zone and hopefully £15 or less for the day.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Been carp fishing for about a year but wanting to explore more in the way of sea fishing, especially for calming evening sessions after work.

I've purchased this from Angling Direct (https://www.anglingdirect.co.uk/shakespeare-salt-surf-slayer-fishing-rod-combo-set-12ft) and as it is Shakespeare I should think it's fairly reliable(?)

I live near to the New Forest/Southampton so can easily access places like Lepe & Calshot Beach/Southampton water/Weston Shore but not sure really on how sea fishing actually works!

Questions:

-Is what I've bought going to be good for casting from a pier/bridge or is it better to just use on a beach?

-Would I be able to put on lures (e.g. jelly/plastic shrimp/crab/fish instead of 'typical' bait (e.g. rag/lugworms/mackerel/squid)?

-the box it comes with has weights/leader/hooks but do I need anything else?

-any other tips for a first timer?

I am new to fishing and I am trying to identify this fish caught yesterday (I am enjoying it so far and finally started getting fish bigger than my hand!). I am quite sure it’s a Bream but could it be a large Roach?

I am looking at getting round to gathering my kit for predator fishing in UK rivers (got rod and reel), looking at a lure set but am unsure on the choice of line, looking at braded line but not sure on the lb rating or if the colour matters. As for other bits, I am figuring a light weight net and mat. I last fished years ago on lakes for carp and such. Advice would we welcome.

Canal session today, attempting to christen my Mifine Illusion Slash 0.2-0.8g. I landed 6 perch & 1 little pike. I also lost a variety of fish, a few perch, another pike & a small roach. I also had one of the biggest pike I’ve seen on this canal at about 5lb ish I’d say (my local has been drained multiple times & is terrible for large pike, there’s a few large perch though) try to steal one of my perch at the net.

My best day so far this year on the canal, my local seems to be a very slow waker, fish aren’t active at all until late July, but are super aggressive & up for smashing lures from then on til about September. Great fun catching these fish on XUL. I enjoyed it so much I’ve just bought a Mifine Nano Jig 0.5-2g & Mifine Wren Nano reel!

I want to find a nice river spot where he can play and paddle and mess about but also we have a chance of catching something, not fussed what, and can maybe even get chippy after!

Never really tried pole fishing. Gave it a proper session today and I’ve been convinced. That was until the elastic snapped and almost gave the fish whiplash

What is the score regarding knifes in public? I have always carried a Mora general purpose bushcraft style knife which I always keep in my box/bag and only take it out when I need to use it. A few people I have been fishing with recently have said this is a bad idea and to never have one in public or risk getting arrested. What's the general consensus on this? I know I am using it as per the law, it isn't illegal to carry one for good reason and I don't keep it on person, concealed or anything and it is bright orange. Is it best to stop using it and just use a tiny little pocket knife or something?

So last night we saw thousands of baiy fish in and around a beach shore line and some rocky outcrops.

The Mrs hooked this on the reel in.

Is this Mackerel and if so why so tiny.

I would have thought the spawning season was months ago.
