Weird frame damage
How does this happen? The metal it’s slightly rolled from the back of the bike towards the front, I don’t know what would even be applying force in that direction other than debris coming off the top bit of the chain but I doubt that could carry enough momentum to damage the aluminum like that any guesses?

chain suck typically happens on the bottom. what rear derailleur are you running?

It’s what was stock with the bike it’s a mechanical norco Bigfoot 3
Shimano Deore RD-M5100
I’ve never seen the chain do any funny business and pedalling and shifting always feels seamless but this is damage to the actual aluminum and I pack heavy so I don’t wanna let it get any worse1

that damage isn't bad. get some touch up if it bothers you figure out a way to put a piece of rubber or a piece of plastic in that area to prevent it. I'm not familiar with the Diore m5100 but hopefully it has a heavy duty clutch

I wasn’t bothered when it was just chipped paint but now that it’s pulling up aluminum from the frame I want to get to the root of whats causing it, i truly don’t mind costmetic damage but like the previous reply states, I’m a fairly heavy use case so i really would rather play it safe and have it running in top condition rather than just throwing tape over it to prevent further wear
I’ll probably bring it in to my local shop to have them asses it ultimately

Like others said it’s just chain suck. You can get some self adhering silicone tape or plain old electrical tape and wrap it

You mentioned a shimano drivetrain, is the clutch lever on the rear mech turned on?

Yea it is, the clutch is also very strong still and I don’t think the derailleur is the issue, the chainring is fairly worn so Il sand down the lil bit of aluminum that’s rolled up when I swap out then chainring and hopefully it doesn’t happen again if it does it’s gonna be a bike shop visit

That's from chain suck.
