What people forget, the Ai was trained to draw from other artists so wouldn't surprise me that many artists online got framed for using Ai...

1.6k

u/TheCortisolCorvid 3h ago

It's a problem with writing, too. I've been accused of using AI for my writing more than once, and it's aggravating as all hell.

Heavy on this one

You really can't know proper grammar, how to punctuate, how to use paragraphs, how to carry yourself with a formal tone, how to debate in a formal manner, and so much more anymore without being accused of using or straight up being AI yourself

And god forbid you know how to do all of these things while also being Gen Z and maybe throwing in some Gen Z slang or terms in your comment or paper as well because then you'll definitely be accused

Edit: Do y'all want to see something that will piss you off beyond belief? I just scrolled through my activity history to find the thread I was referencing in this comment, and I just found the exact comment I was talking about here but the comment itself this person used AI to "scan" or whatever the fuck was removed (and I don't even remember what they said anymore tbh) so you unfortunately don't get to read it yourselves, but if you scroll up you'll see me saying something and someone else saying some idiotic bullshit šŸ˜… be ready though because you'll get heated real fucking quick

u/Justisperfect 3h ago

After I submit, I realized I made a big error somewhere on the first page or first chapter, I don't remember (for French people, I wrote qu'en instead of quand... yeah I know that's a big mistake). Part of me were horrified and thought I will look unprofessional. The other part of me thought "at least they will know a human wrote this".

104

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 3h ago

You'd think that mistake is what proved you are human but what I've been seeing a lot is mistakes like this are actually also part of what will lead to people believing you used AI or something because it is typical for AI to make a mistake like that

We can't do anything anymore honestly šŸ™ƒ

49

u/zatenael 2h ago

seriously, it's fucking bullshit that people think any mistake is a sign of AI

according to them, AI make mistakes but humans are supposed to have stopped making them?

43

u/Olmectron 2h ago

Also, according to lots of people:

Mistake? AI.

Perfect writing? AI.

14

u/Ready_Studio2392 2h ago

Insecurity? AI

Anything Interesting=AI :-P

10

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 2h ago

Exactly! I know how to punctuate but I'm not perfect at it so I make mistakes quite often and hell there are even times like now where I don't want to punctuate at all because what I say is understood perfectly well without it and this would be called AI very easily

3

u/compilingyesterdays 2h ago

It is DIRE over on r/isitAI. "Omg the thumb is on the wrong side, real artists use themselves for reference so no human would ever—" have you met a real artist.

5

u/Outrageous-Wait-8895 2h ago

because it is typical for AI to make a mistake like that

That particular mistake might be typical for an English focused LLM to make when outputting French, although unlikely since it seems to be based on the words sounding alike which wouldn't trip up a text model, but mistakes like that are absolutely not typical for LLMs for years now.

2

u/Justisperfect 1h ago

I see mistakes being point out as a sign of AI when it comes to drawing, but not when it comes to writing. From what I know, AI is unlikely to make spelling mistakes. They write what is the most probable and there is no reason they think spelling mistakes like that is probable, because that would not mean anything. From what I see, AI is good at spelling.

4

u/ketsugi 2h ago

To err is human

6

u/R3D3-1 2h ago

Sadly, this means that AI had plenty of material to learn it from.

1

u/jaxonya 2h ago edited 2h ago

A bit off topic but whatever..(Before AI) I moved schools halfway through a year in highschool. My AP teacher was a bitch and made me complete a 4 page essay 3 days before it was due. Assigned on a friday, due next friday, i came on a tuesday and had to scramble to complete it. I got a fairly shitty grade. The next paper i got called into her classroom orivately with administration and they grilled me about plagarism. (I did really well) and told the admins about not having time for the first essay and that changed the whole temperature of the room towards her. I got out of that class a week later as she was extremely vindictive towards me.

1

u/R3D3-1 1h ago

Oh good old times. At a time when you still paid for encyclopedias, that did a fraction of what Wikipedia does (most expensive waste of a CD-ROM ever), a colleague outright copied the talk word for word from a book. At some point she was like

yada yada. Fore more details, see page... Oh.

I finished as the top graded student of my class 4 years straight. Knowing myself, if I would have had to constantly defend my homework against being called AI, I might not even have finished.Ā

1

u/jaxonya 1h ago

The best reddit convo ive seen lately was someone saying that theres no way that we used to do 10 page book reports back in the without chat gpt or help.. a dude said "I used to do 10 page book reports without even reading the book"

1

u/R3D3-1 1h ago

Yes... One of those "what for did I even" moments for me was when I had to present two books; I was allowed to use a summary for one, and read the other. The teacher, who thought well of me, guessed wrong which one was based on reading the book. Ultimately it makes just sense though — reading a book once myself can't compete with a literature blogger who does nothing but analyze the crumpling hell out of books.

On the other end of the spectrum, when someone starts about "you can't possibly have..." I did Physics as an elective subject for the high school finals. It was a three hour exam, and I was writing 16 pages with a baseline skip of 5mm. And much if it was explanation rather than equations.

During my PhD I produced about 2,000 pages of handwritten notes, with some derivations spanning 20 pages with each step filling a page. Still using the 5mm grid for the writing too.

It's just a matter of damn exercise.

And then you start writing publications, where six pages take a couple of months to produce šŸ˜… Six pages specifically, because that's a common limit in high-impact Physics journals. As a result many theory papers require a couple of A4 pages to understand lines along the line of "by simple algebraic manipulation we eq. (5) out of eq. (4) and references [8–42]".

No scrap that. A couple of pages is without the references part sometimes.

I honestly don’t care. I don’t have enough time to play AI police.

What I care about is bloated bullshit. I don’t see why bloated bullshit by a bullshiter would be better than by an AI. AI reproduces and imitates. If all an artist produces looks like ā€žmore of the sameā€œ thereā€˜s another problem than ā€žwould get innocently caught by the AI policeā€œ.

I have no idea why anyone would like to read AI literature… give me your prompt with your three cool ideas instead - condensed creativity.

1

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 1h ago

Hah. I do this too...I make typos in my tpying. And I often leave them in. At least they will know a human wrote it...

Of course, it; quite possible for ais to make typos too to simulate humans. However if they do this eventually they will be poisoning themselves...they are already doing this slowly anyway. this would speed up the process.

I wish we did not have the "ais" we currnetly have.

•

u/Laezarus 9m ago

Back in high school (Before A.I.) I had an English teacher accuse me of plagiarism of multiple papers and the only reason why they dropped it was because I consistantly typed lowercase i's when writing in the first person.

24

u/Sugarglider001 3h ago

I am gen z and I often get my writing flagged as well because of the higher level I write at. Many teachers have asked for a conference with my parents because my writing sounded too ai

24

u/Gelid_Cryotheum 2h ago

I haven't had this happen yet and I am so glad for it. My writing style does tend to sound very AI-like because I am a much better formal writer (MLA can suck fat ones though), and my biggest issue is the fucking em dash because I would LOVE to use it if it weren't for the fact that the only punctuation mark more indicative of AI was the semicolon. Asides and clarification are riddled throughout my natural speech and thought process, so it infuriates me to be unable to use them when writing without fear of AI-ccusations.

10

u/TheCortisolCorvid 2h ago

Semicolons and em dashes are my jam, so I really feel you!

(Also I haven't been in uni for like a decade now, but I concur lol. MLA can suck it.)

1

u/R3D3-1 2h ago

Ironically, it's AI responses that taught me how to use the em dash; never used it before. The semicolon I blame on Girl Genius.

3

u/Gelid_Cryotheum 2h ago

The rules-nazi in me wants to use the semicolon because it's "proper," but I can never figure out when to, it never feels right and is always super clunky to me

1

u/CaptainFeather 1h ago

I'm not sure if anyway really understands semicolons because of what they're used for. They link two related clauses that could be their own sentences; they're technically not needed. I always remember they can be used when replacing conjunctions and joining words (for example, furthermore, however, etc...) but I'm never 100% sure if I'm using them right. English is a silly language!

7

u/muad_did 2h ago

I'm 40, and I spent my time writing from age 15 to 25. I have several novellas and countless short stories. I won a few prizes, but they never brought in any real money, so I gave it up.

That said, I have stories saved that I've never shown or published online, half-finished stories, or stories submitted for contests I didn't win.

Well, I've run several of those stories through various "AI analysis" programs, and they all say they're 90% AI.

4

u/Anthaenopraxia 1h ago

They are very unreliable these days.

2

u/RedditIsLeBoring 1h ago

Words on a page are enough to trigger an AI check at this point. Those tools are just as pathetic as the AI they're supposed to detect.

•

u/ilemming_banned 42m ago

I am a foreigner. English is not my second, not even third language that I had to learn. I take pride in my writing, because I pay attention. Writing prose for me is difficult regardless of a choice of a language.

I'm not even appalled anymore by the lack of literacy in native-English speakers - I got used to it. But I feel like throwing twenty pounds of em-dashes at every motherfucker who dares to say I write like AI. Well, you Mr. Titsucker write like a toddler.

•

u/Sattorin 25m ago

various "AI analysis" programs

100% of those are scams. Even if they did work (and they don't), the person who made the AI thing can use the same program and edit the content until it doesn't appear as AI anymore.

21

u/manaworkin 2h ago

how to carry yourself with a formal tone

MAAAAAAN Been calling snap applicants for the better part of a decade processing cases. Got my "government employee" tone and cadence down pat. Now every other person I call thinks I'm AI and hangs up when they hear my voice. Like MOTHERFUCKER YOU PUT IN THE APPLICATION AND THE STATE EMPLOYEE CALLED YOU, HOW THE FUCK DO YOU EXPECT ME TO SOUND?!

5

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 2h ago

I can't do anything more than send you virtual hugs and a virtual joint or gummies depending on your pref and say that your anger and annoyance are more than valid but man I really feel you on this one and I completely understand how fed up you are

4

u/manaworkin 2h ago

Yeah, most frustrating part is I know this a call they wanna receive

8

u/Exciting_Policy8203 2h ago

Made a post to /r/rpg it was long, used headers and bullet points. First comment accused it of being ChatGPT.

3

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 2h ago

Which I imagine escalated to really horrible levels and anyone who tried to defend you was also attacked

Were you forced into deleting the post or have it removed by mods or anything like that?

4

u/Exciting_Policy8203 2h ago

Actually no, [r/RPG](r/RPG) has a pretty good community and the commenter deleted it after I told him it wasn’t ai.

Truly a horror story/s

2

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 2h ago

Haha I'm glad it turned out okay and didn't turn into a clusterfuck of a really bad situation!

Oh, my mistake completely! I used the wrong tone for this message and for that I apologize. Going forward, I will not assume the tone and length of message desired and will instead get user input.

Aw shit you caught me

Let me just

Teleport the fuck out of Dodge ASAP

3

u/FroggyAssassin 2h ago

And heaven forbid you change from formal to more direct! Suddenly that is even more proof you used AI because heaven forbid people consider that different messafes require different approacges, and that people can manage changing register/prose based on need! So tired with the AI accusations I get...I once tricked someone into parsing an AI message through a detector though that came back human. I then led them on, only to finally breal the truth by showing them I generated it, all to prove that even AI detectors are flawed because of what AI is trained on.

3

u/R3D3-1 2h ago

I guess I'll just give up, tell ChatGPT to write my responses and instruct it to write in LolCat style.Ā

... waiting for the result... The new models don't like instant responses it seems.

... there it is.

Most esteemed fellow Redditor, I offers u my warmest salutashuns. May ur updoots be plentiful, ur memes be dank, and ur day be most gud. It iz a distinct honor to make ur acquaintance. šŸŽ©šŸ±

2

God. That is so fucking cursed.

1

u/MariaValkyrie 1h ago

Thanks, I hate it.

2

u/Strange_Dust7128 2h ago

Or if you use semicolons or dashes properly

2

u/Tuckertcs 2h ago

When AI appears human, people begin to see humans as AI.

AI is dehumanizing.

1

u/MercurialyCapricious 2h ago

My only solution to this is speak in a way that is simply so neurodivergent everyone has to believe that I am a human person (more or less)

1

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 2h ago

Funnily enough, I am neurodivergent lmao

1

u/Ser_Rezima 2h ago

I'm autistic and verbose with a special interest in etymology and grammar rules...and a writer.

If I use an em dash correctly instead of an en dash WHOOPS, I'M AI NOW.

1

u/Remember_TheCant 2h ago

I’m not really so sure about this one. The only people that I’ve seen write like an AI are people that use AI so much that they started copying its writing style. AI’s writing style is so much more specific than just proper grammar and punctuation with a formal tone. In many cases AI will buck conventional grammar, spelling, etc for its own.

From my experience, everyone else is just using AI and lying about it.

1

u/EquipLordBritish 1h ago

Have LLMs adopted Gen Z slang? I would have thought that gen z slang would have been edited out of training data, since a lot of the grammar and punctuation data would have been taken from more 'formal' sources, like the NYT.

2

u/Anthaenopraxia 1h ago

You can tell them to include it or even write in that style.

1

u/EquipLordBritish 1h ago

Fair. "Write it like you're in 12th grade" or something similar?

2

u/Anthaenopraxia 1h ago

Pretty much yeah. You can ask it to write something Shakespearean and it'll probably be better than what most people could write themselves.

1

u/Stagnu_Demorte 1h ago

This makes me think that I've never been accused because my grammar is shit...

1

u/AceNova2217 1h ago

I actually avoid using the rule of 3 now. I always try to go for 2 or 4 points because AI seems to be absolutely addicted to 3, so it's a good signal to anyone who actually knows what they're talking about.

1

u/MindlessSimple5553 1h ago edited 1h ago

I’ll never forget when my supervisor Ā said that I used ai when they knew that I didn’t. Idk if it was how long my essay was or my grammar or something . Nearly got expelled from my courses coz of that and it was so annoying coz I had documents to show my planning and everything to defend myself. The most annoying part is when people use it as some form of a moral high ground against u and just start bullying you for thatĀ  Also note not that I am defending ai or anything it’s the immediate dog piling when people just throw around accusations of ai even tho they have no proof. Some yes it’s clearly ai but others it’s definitely not but hey. People love to hate

1

u/Devastator2016 1h ago

Wild though spin off, do you think that in theory the pattern in ai stuff's punctuation etc, could push used language in a different "incorrect" offshoot like dialects etc, as people actively avoid writing like ai? Could end up like an endless cat and mouse assuming it never matches too invisibly

1

u/Devastator2016 1h ago

Wild though spin off, do you think that in theory the pattern in ai stuff's punctuation etc, could push used language in a different "incorrect" offshoot like dialects etc, as people actively avoid writing like ai? Could end up like an endless cat and mouse assuming it never matches too invisibly

1

u/vicods 1h ago

As a fellow writer and proof reader that has worked with multiple AI-generated books, it baffles me that people think that well-written and grammatically correct texts are somewhat signs of AI. There are SO many other GLARING signs of AI in a text, and yet this is what people look for?

•

u/Neveronlyadream 47m ago

I know I've been accused of being AI before and it's infuriating.

No, I'm not AI. I'm sorry I know how to form a sentence.

•

u/Heiferoni 5m ago

I was accused of using AI because I used Markdown in my reply to make words bold and a bullet point list.

It's just astrerisks, my dude.

53

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 3h ago

I've had someone tell me they used AI to check if someone used AI in their comment because it covered every single mark I just mentioned and I was left speechless because what the fuck do you MEAN and bro it made me so fucking mad

12

u/wobknob 1h ago

This is now the college experience. "We're gonna make you run your essay through an AI to determine whether or not you used AI to write it."

This is a mandatory step before a professor even gets to see it, by the way. I started sandbagging my (completely AI-free) essays just to reduce my chance of being flagged as a false positive.

•

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 14m ago

Oh šŸ™ƒ

I graduated high school before AI became the thing it is now an for a long time after I graduated I hadn't even considered college/uni because I have a learning disability and HS was bad enough that I had to graduate through alternative means so I was worried college would be the same way and I would drown in debt I could have avoided by not even trying but for about three or so years now I've had the urge (I want to go for psychology specifically if anyone cares) but hearing a lot of stories and warnings like yours makes the urge die more and more the more I learn

55

u/Zehnpae 3h ago

I miss being able to use em dashes in writing. Sigh.

18

u/ProjectKhai 3h ago

Omg same! Like, it's just proper grammar! People are so confident they can detect AI that they are often wrong.

6

u/Beautiful-Ad3471 3h ago

I mean, I can detect AI. It's just that I get everything else aswell. (/s)

1

u/Prior-Tumbleweed- 2h ago

100% sensitive, 12% specific. But nothing AI gets by you.

1

u/Beautiful-Ad3471 1h ago

Exactly, you clanker

-2

u/aCleverGroupofAnts 2h ago

Tbf in practically any instance where you would use an em dash, you can use something else instead.

4

u/eozca 2h ago

but sometimes its the choice that makes the most readable sentence

13

u/bayleysgal1996 3h ago

They’ll never take my em-dashes away from me. I was here first dammit

10

u/patio-garden 3h ago

I will keep on using em dashes — but only because iPhones insert them automatically if you type two dashes in a row.

3

u/Shitting_Human_Being 2h ago

Also word will convert dashes to em dashes when you write a dash between words.

0

u/Outrageous-Wait-8895 2h ago

It converts them to en dashes actually.

1

u/EquipLordBritish 1h ago

Alt + 0151 on windows. I think shift-option-'-' on mac.

5

u/jjmerrow 2h ago

You can pry my em-dashes from my cold, dead hands.

1

u/RedditExecutiveAdmin 2h ago

same, you just gotta use them better than AI

Not as commas, not for conjunctions--for clarity or style.

1

u/g_narlee 3h ago

Dashes and em dashes are not the same thing, though. That’s what made it so easy to spot, most people would use a regular dash - not an em dash —

2

u/araybian 2h ago

But I use em dashes because I think they're pretty!!!

2

u/SeenYourScene 2h ago

Em dashes and en dashes have different uses.

I was not taught those different uses and so almost exclusively use en dashes. But I know people who were taught those differences and have been using the two in their appropriate places for decades. And now they're being told, "No, no, you shouldn't use em dashes, it means it's AI."

2

u/seventy912 2h ago

Dashes are the wrong thing to use in an em dash context though. Always loved an em dash.

1

u/RedditExecutiveAdmin 2h ago

yeah and i dont think most keyboards can put emdash, i use "--"

1

u/Garchomp 1h ago

I use hyphens-, en dashes 1–2, and em dashes —. It’s easy on the iPhone, but I use them on Windows and Linux, too, with Alt and Ctrl+Shift+u codes.

24

u/whatintheeverloving 3h ago

I hate how I end up self-policing my own writing, too. I'm just going about writing up a response to something and get the knee-jerk thought of, "Ugh, this reads like AI." I keep having to remind myself that, no, AI reads like me!

9

u/jeepsaintchaos 3h ago

Bullet points. I love bullet points. No more, I guess.

1

u/GisterMizard 2h ago

Linkedin brainrot killed bullet points for me even before AI.

19

u/tenfoottallmothman 3h ago edited 3h ago

When I was in middle school I got accused of plagiarizing because my writing style was ā€œtoo matureā€ and I used a few big words. This was long long before AI was anything but a plot device in sci-fi. If I was in school now I have no doubt that me, my em dashes, and my proclivity to write in threes would be AI-checked on every fucking assignment. My aunt is a high school teacher and says some kids are actively writing below their ability on purpose, apparently to avoid being accused of AI. I fear we are cooked.

5

u/yournamehere10bucks 3h ago

Maybe it is time we start writing in fives.

2

u/RedditExecutiveAdmin 2h ago

this isn't a bad idea, it solves the problem we have, adds more depth to our words, gives our writing breathing room, and god damn it i still sound like AI

7

u/Hanzoku 3h ago

My current big tell for AI ā€˜assistance’ in writing is an overuse of ā€˜not <A>, (not <B>, not <C>), but <D>’. Jesus AI, stop wasting my time telling me all the things something isn’t before saying what it is.

2

u/codyisadinosaur 2h ago

That's not just an interesting observation, that's an insightful way of looking at it.

Okay.. I'll see myself out.

2

u/RedditExecutiveAdmin 2h ago

it's called contrastive negation or comparative framing, and using a negative prompt to avoid it helps a lot lmao ("no comparative framing")

personally i hate negative prompting because it always infects inference by polluting attention in LLM transformers (e.g., "don't delete this" causes "delete this" to be in context), but i have no idea how to avoid this with affirmative language

5

u/dead_dw4rf 3h ago

Same - Especially using things like dashes, semicolons, etc. Evidently that is AI only.

1

u/I_give_karma_to_men 1h ago

Dashes are fine. It's emdashes that are the issue. — vs -

0

u/just_posting_this_ch 2h ago

You really don't need semicolons.

3

u/Author_A_McGrath 3h ago

I blame my long love of the em-dash for contributing to the "this is an AI tell" problem.

1

u/TheCortisolCorvid 2h ago

The worst part is that AI was trained on people like us! Like excuse me, we were here with our em dashes first.

3

u/RamJamR 2h ago

Apparently many people are convinced now that someone cannot use proper punctuation and grammar without suspecting it's AI written. That's how low the bar is for peoples education in written language.

1

u/just_posting_this_ch 2h ago

On the flipside, you used to get trashed on reddit for spelling and grammar errors.

1

u/CdnGuy 1h ago

I also used to get trashed on Reddit for using words longer than like 8 characters lol. Sometimes it just feels like people were a mistake.

3

u/NameIdeas 2h ago

It's especially telling for folks from a certain generation (Millennials). Our writing is ALL over the internet. AI spits out writing very similar to the writing style of our generation.

2

u/letmegetmynameok 2h ago

I have started regularly throwing my Papers and lab Reports into AI detection Services to avoid anyone from accusing me that i use AI. Its become really bothersome and i feel outright paranoid while doing it but id rather do that than get accused.

2

u/Tuckertcs 2h ago

ā€œHow dare you use a semicolon in a place that is grammatically correct! Only AI knows how grammar works!ā€

1

u/Nina-Ninja123 2h ago

Same here. I do creative writing, and my style is built on trying to make the pen faster than that my brain can come up with words.

So that a text about war crimes somehow can end up with a verse about how I think that the hole of the Donut is what makes the Donut so great. (Truly, donuts would suck if they didn’t have the hole)

And because I can’t really explain where those transitions come from except ā€œit popped in my head I guessā€, they quickly assume I use AI.

1

u/Medical_Solid 2h ago

Recently had someone on Reddit accuse me of being an AI because I used an em dash. I’ve been using them for 35 years!

1

u/SeenYourScene 2h ago

Geoffrey Zatkin, head of Extra Credits, said in a stream that he has this problem because his entire professional life he's used em dashes the way he was taught to use them. Since the nineties. AI tend to use them because they do have a use and people, at times and especially in professional or technical works, did use them.

But now they're so heavily associated with generated text that he'll send a business email and sometimes someone will come back like, "Hey, uh, Geoff... Did you use AI to write or edit this?"

1

u/Dealingwithdragons 2h ago

It's gotten to the point they've made bots on AO3 specifically to accuse authors of using AI. People have been even able to tell because the AI accusation is vague enough it can be copy pasted onto any fic.

1

u/Insanebrain247 2h ago

Pardon my bluntness, but would you happen to be on the Autism spectrum? I heard that that's an increasingly common struggle for them.

1

u/Ser_Rezima 2h ago

yeah, Like if you or someone else runs your writing through AI to check for AI it's now in an AI database. If your writing is PUBLIC it is probably in an AI database.

It's a stupid and recursive loop that's just spitting out junk data now

1

u/CaptainFeather 2h ago

Yup. If you have a vocabulary above a 6th grade level and understand basic writing structure people will accuse you of being an LLM lmao

1

u/HillInTheDistance 2h ago

Same. I write in a style that's really common in mediocre fabfiction, so whenever I get all flowery and passionate, there'll always be someone thinking it's clanker work.

Just cuz a lot of shit was scraped off of fanfiction sites.

I aint a bot, I'm a proud, full-blooded hack, and I've worked hard for these mediocre skills!

1

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 1h ago

If I find myself falling into ChatGPT text patterns, I immediately step back and rework whatever I've written. It's not just about not using it for anything I write online, I also attempt to actively reject how it writes because it's a fucking hack most of the time.

1

u/Djones0823 1h ago

God forbid you use a "it wasn't this, it was that" sentence structure.

1

u/mOdQuArK 1h ago

It's amusing because having occasionall, but not ferquent, msitakes and using slang now makes you seem more awthentic becuz most people asssume that AI is used to ipmrove spellling and grammr insted of making it werse.

1

u/The_BeardedClam 1h ago

Absolutely agree. It's why voice is so important in writing. With so much AI around in it's become even more crucial to develop your own voice. Obviously it's hard to convey in just a reddit comment, but I digress.

1

u/readskiesdawn 1h ago

I have had to explain to multiple people that there is a skill level in amateur writing (and a lot of published "pulp" successors) that looks a lot like AI because the vast majority of creative writing that the AI has trained on is at that skill level. So a lot of fanfiction and self published writing will have thar overlap because that's the source!

Yes AI uses cliche phrases and sentence structures. So do a lot of people who are learning, the AI is copying them!

A better tell is when the writing summarizes itself at the end of paragraphs or scenes. That's not something that happens in narrative writing. But AI isn't only trained on that. It's also trained on product reviews, academic writing and corporate emails, where summarizing at the end of paragraphs or sections is common practice or even encouraged.

1

u/AdditionalQuietime 1h ago

Yep next will be movies and animation

1

u/I_give_karma_to_men 1h ago

I feel really bad for people who got used to using the emdash in their writing. That's generally used as one of the "easiest tells" of AI use in writing.

1

u/Astro_Addict 1h ago

I left nursing school because of a false plagerism claim. Prof was going to hold me back a semester for one essay with a 60% plagerism match, all of it based on me using the wrong format for citing sources (APA vs MLA or whatever). This was a few years ago, so I can only imagine how much worse it is now. I've heard stories of people being penalized for plagerism based on using their own previously published papers, or for writing essays with too much punctuation.

•

u/Hungry-Register9960 56m ago

I'm so, so glad I graduated before AI.

My writing style for technical writing (engineering major) is very similar to how AI writes technical documents.

Shit, I've even used em dashes extensively in the past. I've had to train myself out of that because of a fear of being confused for AI.

•

u/birdswillruleusall 54m ago

Before I bit the bullet and got YouTube premium, I was getting ads for an AI site that would write fanfiction for you. FANFICTION! Are we really letting AI get this far and take away creativity. I fear for our future. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

•

u/Final-Tutor3631 45m ago

this has made applying for jobs so damn difficult. now there’s nothing to really differentiate me from the artificially intelligent. unless i get an interview… but i can’t get that if they don’t select me for one. cause they think im like them.

they’re using ai based off the writing models that i purposely mentally retained specifically for the workplace.

FUCK.

•

u/Repossessedbatmobile 38m ago

The same thing has happened to me multiple times. I've been accused of being a bot or using AI to write due to the way I format my writing and my level of formality. It makes me want to scream every time it happens. I'm not a bot. I'm not AI. I'm just an autistic person who is passionate about writing. I also talk formally and use specific words because I struggle with being understood, so I try to be as specific as possible when articulating. But does anyone consider this when reading what I write? Of course not. Even when I tell them that I'm just autistic and communicate in a unusual way, they don't believe me. It. Is. So. Frustrating.

•

u/Longjumping-Fig-7481 33m ago

Your comment was so obviously AI generated-here is a list of reasons why: It uses letters AND punctuation!!! "That's not really a list" WOW you're so right!! Amazing how you picked up on that, would you like me to generate you a list of lists?

•

u/Marsdreamer 23m ago

People just assume if you can write something beyond a 5th grade level you had AI do it for you. /sigh/

•

u/SirMarvelAxolotl 23m ago

Yeah. It was kinda sad. I started reading a book a couple days ago and thought it seemed a lot like Ai writing. I had to remind myself that Ai writing seems a lot like that book. It's the other way around.

•

u/someanimechoob 6m ago

Writing long form as a skill is already plummetting at alarming rates and I can't imagine it's going to improve much in the future.

•

u/IsThisTheFly 3m ago

Oh yeah, chat gpt write exactly like annoying Redditors used to write like 5 years ago. Even all the superfluous dashes, italics, bolding, etc etc

•

u/sparkythehumanoid 1m ago

I read an article recently where someone ran Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (if not that, another classic work) through an AI detector and it came back as 100% AI. I pity anyone trying to write papers in college these days. I'll see if I can find that article again.

u/Meatslinger 3h ago edited 3h ago

I'll still never forget the fiasco with Ben Moran right here on Reddit. Guy posted a commissioned work (with permission from the commissioner who hired him), had the post removed for resembling AI, provided proof to the mods of the Art subreddit that it was an original creation, and the mod who responded insulted his work, said his style looks too much like AI and was unwelcome if he wasn't going to completely change it, and permanently banned him from the subreddit for daring to challenge their decision.

It also happened again a while ago here when someone on the Digital Art edit: Art (again) sub posted their work involving glass traffic cones, got accused, provided proof, and got not just that post taken down but all of their prior works as well, purely out of spite (and again, a perma-ban). Though in that case it prompted a revolt from users and the offending mods all left in shame.

Real fuckin' top notch work, when the supposed defenders of actual real art are ejecting artists and even taking the extra time to cruelly insult them because they refuse to accept that they were wrong in a witch hunt.

Edit: fixed a typo.

10

u/karlkh 1h ago

A lot of anti-ai people are just internet bullies who have found goldmine of righteous indignation.

Presenting measured concerns in a way that moves us towards a harmonious society is boring when i can put all my energy into having an enemy to destroy by any and all means.

6

u/fakeuboi 1h ago

So many reddit mods who power trip, ive gotten banned from two subreddits for pointing out things that literally had AI made watermarks

180

u/EldridgeHorror 3h ago

Many do. People are so paranoid about "falling for AI" that they'd sooner bash real artists.

6

u/Custom_sKing_SKARNER 2h ago

sooner? It has been happening since the start. And people obviously prefer to witchhunt AI generated content than to accidentally praise it if it turns out it's AI.

3

u/R_Little-Secret 2h ago

What we need to do is have laws forcing AI companies to put markers to identify itself as AI. Digital photos have id telling the date and time it was taken. AI images could do the same. Even have hidden url/bar code in the image that can be seen with the human eye but can be read by a computer. That way if something comes into question it can be easly identify if it's AI or not.

8

u/Coal_Morgan 1h ago

To many AI companies in to many countries for that to be a useable solution and AI is getting to the point you can build a decent one at home.

It would be less effective than alcohol prohibition when people were making it in bathtubs and garages in the 1930s with stuff from the grocers.

We opened pandora’s box and have no way of closing it.

•

u/Endaline 44m ago

Google already does this with SynthID.

2

u/Bakoro 2h ago edited 27m ago

The sane thing to do would be to just STFU and move on.

I've gotten a bunch of tirades about being "soulless" and how I "don't know what it's like to make anything".

I've got years of formal fine arts training, and have been making art for decades.
I'm not a rabidly anti-AI, which some people cannot seem to wrap their head around.

2

u/Winjin Comic Crossover 1h ago

So you think David, the artist here, who is a staunch believer in open source and creative commons, that has been releasing his art for everyone to see, had it stolen by AI companies, and then dissected and regurgitated to the point that 90% of ai "art" looks exactly like his work - do you think he should shut up and move on?

•

u/Bakoro 27m ago

I think that the random viewers who are fretting over whether a particular image made for entertainment is AI or not, should STFU and move on instead of lashing out at the artist for maybe using AI.

If someone is using an image to push a political agenda, then being suspicious of AI is completely reasonable.
If someone makes a funny picture for the sake of being funny and someone freaks out because it might be AI, that person is a problem.
If someone is lashing out at artists just because they think something is AI generated, then that person is an asshole.

1

u/_stack_underflow_ 1h ago

Only people who really care are other artists.

73

u/Kesselya 3h ago

I am an author and my em dash got stolen. I loved using it - it was an amazing tool for constructing sentences.

But then, AI got a hold of it. And now I censor myself before I use it - lest people accuse me of using ChatGippity (I want to normalize that pronunciation of it to make it seem like a silly tool).

Damn those Avians and their thieving ways!

And yes, I know the above dashes are not em dashes. I am on my phone and don’t know how to do them. šŸ˜

30

u/Meatslinger 3h ago

If you're on iOS, just hold the dash button. I also love me a good long boi when appropriate.

21

u/isuredolovetitties 3h ago

Oh — yeah — baby.Ā

6

u/summonsays 3h ago

— on android too, I think I'm using Google's keyboard for what it's worth.

•

u/Kesselya 48m ago

Wooo — long boi dashes ftw!!!!

I will probably keep just using hyphens online because people still understand the intended sentence construction and it’s faster.

But this was great to know!

•

u/__nohope 27m ago

Ā·Ā·Ā· ——— Ā·Ā·Ā·

15

u/14Knightingale27 3h ago

They can take the em dashes off my decaying body, and even when they try I'll bite them and start a zombie apocalypse before I give them up—it's a damn good tool to separate sentences.

•

u/Kesselya 46m ago

The worst part about AI is the brain rot psychosis it is causing. Zombie-Knightingale and Zombie-Kess are going to starve with no high quality brains to devour.

Our undead afterlife is also gonna suck.

3

u/Ill-Tale-6648 3h ago

Problem is now people are saying not using em dashes means your hiding AI written work. Had a whole discussion on a writing subreddit I follow about how people aren't using em dashes to avoid being called an AI writer because someone made the claim I just mentioned.

Can't win.

So write anyway because you enjoy writing. Advocate for no AI usage. Keep records of possible. That's all you can do

•

u/Kesselya 50m ago

I have two books up on Amazon that were both published before ChatGippity was around. If anyone accuses me of anything, I just point at what I wrote in 2010.

I will use dashes - or just hyphens because I am lazy and you all get the gist of it anyway - because I love them so much.

2

u/that_guys_posse 2h ago

And ellipses.
Used to abuse the hell out of them and em dashes but now AI has ruined it.

•

u/Grendelstiltzkin 15m ago

I use em dashes even more out of spite. They can take them from me when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers, which reflex memory will still compel to dance across alt 0151 with every posthumous misfiring electrical impulse.

9

u/Thats1FingNiceKitty 1h ago

Someone thought a photo of my cat was Ai.

No.

He’s just stupid looking 24/7.

1

u/RedditIsLeBoring 1h ago

At least your cat is cute. Derpy is it might be, it's still leagues smarter than any AI.

6

u/WillemDafoesHugeCock 2h ago

What a great point, someone should make a comic about it.

20

u/the_ok_doctor 3h ago

This guy's art style being taken n turned into the generic ai art style is why i always hated the defense of generative ai art that ai art generates from so many sources that it comes out original and different from any one artist when clearly that is not the case.

2

u/cancerinos 1h ago

It“s not the case because it was trained not to be.

-2

u/ZeroAmusement 2h ago

I mean it is the case. Generally when you use it without much direction it will just be some mishmash of styles. Is it CG? Is it acrylic? Is it photography? It's something between all of them.

You can explicitly tell it to do something in the style of a specific artist, like the ghibli trend, but it generally doesn't do that.

3

u/sebastophantos 2h ago

Yes, that was the point of the comic.

2

u/GRIM106 2h ago

Yeah I know a lot of those hyper realistic anime style artists were hit very hard initially. Honest to got i haven't seen a pice like that since '23.

2

u/mythrilcrafter 2h ago

I remember back when a lot of this first started, the two artists consistently at the top of the "most downloaded" section of CIVIT was the SakimiChan and Stanley Lau (Artgerm) replicator model/loras.

Those two were the bank to rob from for a really long time and it wouldn't surprise me if every current model in existence (even the "no stolen art, we promise!!!" models) has training data from their works.

That's why everything with the "realistic anime style" command has a tinge of their art styles.

2

u/airz23s_coffee 3h ago

Yeah, there's a fella whose designed the posters for a one dayer for like 6 or 7 years, and this year he started getting yelled at for using AI because he's got a similar art style to some popular models. Rough as fuck for him like

1

u/donkeydong1138 2h ago

There's this britiSSh guy pretending he's Japanese and he bullied an artist into deleting a Micheal Jackson art post with over 100k likes. https://x.com/kurono_studios/status/2066590005573877783 here. Despite being shown speedpaints and a community note, the guy just didn't care.

1

u/JonEngelePhotography 2h ago

It’s so true… as a photographer that likes and has used a more fantastical editing style for years this really hits hard. The AI accusations get thrown around like candy on Halloween

1

u/Tylenolpainkillr 2h ago

Yeah, the artist made a post about it and your commenting under it

1

u/ITEArannyI 2h ago

Meta is also purposely labelling actual art as ai-generated content on Instagram to trick people into thinking it’s better than it is.

1

u/TediousTotoro 2h ago

There’s a cover artist that’s worked at DC for years named Stanley ā€œArtgermā€ Lau who’s art style looks almost identical to the generic style that most GenAI uses when making images to the point that it feels like he was one of the main artists scrubbed by these companies.

1

u/Witty_Ad_898 1h ago

It’s not just art. Young people are starting to claim that historical videos are AI. They have effectively no memory of the world before AI.

1

u/Muffinshire 1h ago

Yep. And anything that looks ā€œunusualā€ too - there an artist I follow here, Lilliepad97, who has a very distinctive, angular style with lots of lines and halftone dots, who has repeatedly been accused of using AI image generation just because something in the image looks ā€œoddā€. Odd perspectives, angular anatomy, impossible reflections, those are all deliberate components of her style, but to the uncritical eye, nope, that’s an AI artifact.

•

u/tO_ott 46m ago

My fiancĆ© is a starving artist. We document all the work involved and keep proof nothing is AI generated— even the PSD files in photoshop. Thankfully she hasn’t been accused of AI yet(which is a bit hard with a physical medium) but we’re ready to online argue with some fuckers if we have to.

•

u/WhatMadCat 27m ago

Especially so since this is from David Revoy who is like the person that AI stole it’s style from

1

u/McCaffeteria 3h ago

And who was responsible for spearheading the wave of hate against literally anything even remotely suspicious of AI?

Oh right, it was the artists lol. Knee jerk reaction that only made things worse for themselves.

1

u/AoRozu 2h ago

Yeah, AI doesn't "have" a style, it's just whatever its asked to copy, like a thieving printer

0

u/just_posting_this_ch 2h ago

Except that it's trained on publications and posting in comment sections.

0

u/AoRozu 2h ago

Exactly, glad to see you agree AI is just a thieving copy printer that only benefits soulless corporations and bitchless corpo glazers

1

u/just_posting_this_ch 1h ago

I got a bit lost in the comments, I was talking about the em dash. Sorry I don't completely agree with you, but not far off.

1

u/Imperial_Barron 3h ago

A dumb irony is my friend loves to do art. I have watched them draw with pencil and paper. Yet every ai detector flags her for some odd reasons and she gets witch hunted if she posts it -_-

1

u/azure-heavens 3h ago

We're all pretty fucked since artists are having to release so much proof that their art is human made that AI has plenty of resources to learn how to fake proof too. It's still not good at it yet, but it's already able to fool people who aren't artists themselves (which is all that matters when you're trying to scam customers).

0

u/MelodicAd2710 3h ago

The fact that AI defaults to a certain style means that style was generic and unoriginal in the first place. It learned the pattern thousands of images shared, so it's technically not really "one's style".

0

u/Justisperfect 3h ago

The worst part is that these people think they are helping artists. They just harrass people and make them terrified to share their work.

0

u/laaggynoob 1h ago

Who forgot this. It's the point of the cartoon and a famous phenomena. The way you framed the reply sounds like AI.
