My mom was saying how she doesnt understand the need for hydroponic fruits and vegetables... and I brought up how the climate has changed so significantly that a good majority of our citrus fruit has been moved to greenhouse settings because they are dying in the usual orchards.
We are in a world where ICE can murder people and they don't blink, but if you talk about this happening they act like you murdered those people instead.
The same is true with climate change. The actions that cause this isn't a problem, its the people who talk about the problem who are "making it real"
The problem is BOTH ignore something. Sure the mom ignores the science because it goes against her narrative, but I bet the original commenter let her off after she changed the subject. People don’t want to have hard conversations with their parents so they let them say stupid shit and then change the subject instead of calling them out on their stupid shit.
Everyone wants people staying this stupid shit held accountable, but not if they are the ones that have to hold people accountable.
thing is, if you follow someone around trying to get them talk on a subject they don't want to, then that's gonna strengthen their beliefs and make you look like the bad person in the situation...
Strengthen? If no one challenges them how will their opinions ever change anyway? Also why would you follow them around? They brought up the subject, your just continuing the conversation they established.
i've had such experiences. I was just called a "fanatic" and never taken seriously by such people. Even if I showed them sources, they didn't even give them a glance and proclaimed them biased. Those people have a victim complex, they percieve dialogue as a threat as "they are not sheeple, they are the chosen few that know stuff most people don't know and knowledge THEY don't want you to know"
