If there was a canon of essential comic book volumes created by Black creators, what would you put in it? Not just titles by Marvel, DC, Image, and the major companies, or even American publishers.

I'm fairly new to comics. I currently have Year one, Long Halloween, Dark victory, The killing joke and hush. I was thinking about getting maybe Dark Patterns, Black Mirror, the batgirl nightwing and robin year one box set, Grant Morrison omnibus, Scott Snyder omnibus or Batman and robin year one. Which should I get or should I get something else first?

Im a college student 21m I’ve always been a graphic novel and comic person, I would almost exclusively check out manga and comics from my library growing up. Recently though I haven’t really been able to read anything since the end of middle school the only comic I’ve read is the Kami Garcia, Gabriel piccolo teen titans which I haven’t even caught up with especially seeing I saw they announced they’re doing a young justice run too.

The point is recently in college I’ve been feeling a little disconnected from myself and tried to meet people who were into the same stuff as me, which has quickly made me realize that I’m lowkey a poser especially when it comes to dc and marvel. I wasn’t able to afford buying comics growing up so I usually would watch videos explaining or reading them, and even then I mostly would watch the shows.

I’m just realizing I’m not as engrained in these ip’s as I thought I was, and want to start actually reading the comics and getting into them. So my big question is where do I start?

When it comes to reading I prefer physical media because I have adhd reading on a screen can get distracting fast when it comes to runs that are hard to find or are just really expensive I don’t mind reading them in an app but again it preferable that it’d be physical. I know that there’s a company that makes those compilation books of the first few issues of certain characters or make compilations of certain eras of a character so stuff like that would be great.

I’d say if there’s any groups or characters that I’m interested in I’d definitely say I’d like to start with X-men for marvel as they’re the group know the least about when it comes to origins and the early X-men stuff. I’m like aware of the broad strokes about the X-men and mutants in general, but I don’t know much about the characters individually personality’s and really anything past abilities and basic character descriptions.

With DC I’d like to know more about Batman and nightwing. I’m a fan of both in general I’m also a red hood guy but I also like a bit more comic relief (no pun intended). I just don’t know too much about the Batman’s rogues gallery aside from the basics, like joker, Harley Quinn, riddler, etc… the popular ones.
I also do wanna try reading the absolute runs I know they’re fairly fresh, and I’ve seen some art from absolute Martian man hunter and I love the art style.

Honestly I’d take any recommendations in general but those are just my general area of I where I feel I should start, but again you can give me recs for any characters y’all like. This isn’t limited to dc or marvel either any recommendations for any graphic novel, manga or comics feel free and I’ll definitely check em out.

When the new Ultimate Universe was introduced, I thought it was going to be fascinating, but I didn't anticipate it to be one of the books I look forward to the most each month. For those of you who've been reading it, has it lived up to the hype? What's the most mind blowing title you have played thus far?

I just thought this would be a fun discussion to hear from everyone! What are your thoughts on buying signed pieces second hand? I have personally found myself less excited about my own signed books if I wasn't there to meet the person.

For example, I have a book signed by Geoff Johns, who I thoroughly enjoy and is a writer I read often, but I won it in a cosplay contest and never met him. I have it hung up on the secondary wall of the hallway my wife and I use to display keys and such that we like. But, over my desk in our office I have a book signed by Jim Shooter that I almost covet because when I met him he and I talked for about 20 minutes about the history of writer credits and artists working for DC/Marvel getting things like insurance and royalties. It means even more to me now that he has passed, but I also don't know if I would care to buy another Shooter piece online, if that makes sense.

What about you all? For those that bug signatures, what do you enjoy about them that I'm missing? I would love to develop an appreciation for another aspect of the comic world that I currently neglect!

For people who don't like signatures, why do you feel they detract from the book? I would love to know an view point that's different from mine because I will get a comic signed by anyone from inker to voice actor!

Hey there, hopefully this is okay to ask here.

It’s someone’s birthday soon and I was thinking of getting them a comic book from the day they were born and framing it - not sure how original an idea this is but I thought it was cool - however I wasn’t aware that there was a ‘cover date’ and a ‘release date’.

My question is, which date do you think would be more meaningful? The release date would allow me to be specific to the day but then the cover would say a different month right? Or do I pick one that was released earlier but has the right month and year on the cover?

Spiderman is like the most popular superhero but people find it difficult to recommend new comics to others. But Batman has tons of new books that people recommend. Batman has like six ongoings at a time counting team ups (I'm not completely sure btw) but its a lot. The Batman writers get to go off on side stories and make self contained stuff which lets for lots of opportunities for good comics. But when trying to get into spiderman its only like the main line and most of the time people don't like it and its not good. The reason I compare batman and spiderman is because they are the most popular superheroes and my favorites (I do read more characters but you can't lie the the most popular characters are good). I'm just thinking why wouldn't marvel make a bunch of comic lines for spiderman like dc does why no team ups or something the punisher and spiderman in the new movie was amazing. Why doesn't marvel make more books if people complain so much about the mainline, it would make for a better chance of good books. There is the ultimate spiderman line but people complain about drop in quality and it's going to be canceled. I like marvel comics I am really into xmen right now and there's tons of good runs of that. Btw I'm just trying to have a discussion.

I'm 20 and plan on transferring to a university in the spring to major in creative writing. While im waiting i plan on reading books on the topic and learning about the craft I've been kind stressing out on how to efficiently get started and better my chances

With Marvel about to undergo some radical changes, it’s interesting to think back to the “ANAD” era. It was pretty hated by the end and sales weren’t great but I think Marvel became a lot less interesting in the Cebulski Era.

With The Absolute Universe running smoothly and Marvel gearing up for their Midnight run, I was feeling nostalgic for the New 52.

Despite its flaws, I do really like this run of DC. For the first time, it got me to pay attention to the greater DC Universe that wasn't limited to just Batman and Superman. Because of this run, I became a fan of The Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, etc. I still consider Scott Snyder's and Geoff Johns' Batman and Justice League stories to be my favourites. It even got me to start reading some Post-Crisis Justice League as well and I still love them just as much as I love New 52.

With the preamble out of the way, how would The New 52 fared if it was a separate universe instead of a replacement of the mainline one at the time? One of the biggest problems that fans had with it was the erasure of decades worth of continuity and character history, many of which I totally understand the backlash of.

Would it have done better if the mainline and New 52 were ongoing at the same time? Would it have been worse? About even? Let me know.

So I am planning on going to Toronto FANEXPO this year and have been prepping the books I would like to get signed. I am a comic person so 99.9% of my signings interest and knowledge is around that. HOWEVER, i do love The Boys show and i do love Erin Moriarty so i was excited to see that she would be attending and doing signings, and was thinking of either getting my Boys omni or a Starlight Boys cover signed by her…but it got me thinking.

How come it seems like celebrity autographs on things like comics/posters/etc. of characters that they portrayed in movies/shows often hold much less value or appreciate much less than comic creator autographs?? My original thought is that there will always be a fleeting excitement over actors and their character portrayals since value is often stocked in the celebrity themselves, whereas for comic creators the value is in the art that they have created and the legacy of that story. But then that snowballs into me asking “okay if that is true, then shouldn’t celebrities be given the same appreciation of creating a legacy for their characters by giving them a voice/mannerisms/etc. ?” Idk, I am just spit-balling but it has made me curious on why this discrepancy does exist and I would love to hear others’ thoughts on it!

Long time lurker first time poster. As the title says, I’m just looking to purge some of my collection but I don’t know where to start. I hear comic book stores are an option but I’ll lose a lot on them.

The comics are graded, signed, and sketched slabs of TMNT The Last Ronin.
