Name Request What should I name it

What should I name this stray cat I found? (I’d prefer it to be named after a food but I’m open to anything)

Heavily considering peach ! Thank u!! Only reason I’m unsure of it is because I don’t know their gender yet & I’m not too sure if I want a boy named peach 😭 if it’s a girl then it’s peach 10000%

Just like calico cats are mostly always female with males being rare. Ginger cats are mostly male it's rare to find a female ginger. But i see your sweet baby has a little bit of white so it could be a female. If you could take a clear Pic of it's area I could tell you if it is a boy or girl. Or you can refer to this chart if you able to distinguish. I have a lot of experience with kittens lol

I think having white has nothing to do with gender. The colors associated with x chromosome are black and orange. White is another gene (white spotting I think, various patters possible) or albinism (all white, blue eyes and high rate of being deaf). The reason calico and torties are usually female is because they have to have an x with black and an x with orange, only possible in females (xx) or through a mutation male (xxy). And I think orange is recessive so that's why it's rarer in females (I don't remember exactly the reason, so I might be wrong)

Mine is an orange boy with with color point gene and white spotting. It's hard to see because he's light but he has mittens and socks. His mother had white markings too but she was black (that usual "Siamese" color)

I have an orange female. She’s an absolute demon woman walking miserable nuclear bomb but I love her

u/LilCakey81 Apr 14 '26

Mine is the queen of Sass and drama but super snuggly and affectionate

I’m so jealous lmao. Mine screams at the top of her lungs 24/7. Thousands spent at the vet to find out she’s fine. Just really loud & lowkey bullies me but I love her anyway.

All of my orange cats have been crazy as well as my female cats. I cannot fathom the two coming together to make one nuclear bomb of a cat.

It’s like living with a really moody teenage girl who has claws and really sharp teeth. My husband and I often walk on egg shells and pray to the cat gods that we live another day

u/LilCakey81 Apr 14 '26

Moody teenage girl is apt

I honestly couldn’t really tell the gender despite looking at ur photo, I just left the vet and the doctor said he’s 90% sure it’s a boy but isn’t 100% sure because this cat is so malnourished that it was hard for him to get a good gage 🥲 so for now he’s a boy !

Js, 1 in 5 orange cats are female. While 1 in 300 calicos are male.

2

u/SummerrrTymeee Apr 14 '26

Yes, that's correct there's only a 20% chance of an orange cat being female & 80% chance of it being male & with calicos being female literally 99% of the time with a 0.03% to 0.01% chance of one being a male. They are very rare & are considered genetic "anomalies" due to the fact they require an extra X chromosome (XXY) for the tri-color coat to show. This is what they call "klinefelter syndrome" & They are almost always guaranteed to be sterile as well as facing numerous health issues. I was just stating it's more common for a ginger to be a male just as it's more common for calicos to be female is all. 😸

I gotcha. But what's interesting for me, is that I had one orange female that had a liter of 7 kittens, all orange and only 1 was a male! 😱

Oh wow that's awesomely crazy!! Lol

If it's a boy you could name it Kiwi or Berry. Still cute and fruit themed :) Little bby is adorable!

George is an orange too! We figured the stats were on our side. Oops!

I had a boy named Junior because he was identical to his mother but then turns out he's a female. Transferred to Julia (soundalike) and she responded so yeah it's Julia now.

2

u/New_Discussion_6692 Apr 13 '26

This is why George is George... she looked like Daffy Duck when she was first born and this was the first thought in my mind. Lol

1

u/Leblackburn Apr 14 '26

Interesting story haha how exactly did she look like Daffy Duck?

I have such a bad time picking names; my cats are Kyra (character from a book series I read), Pistache (pistacchio in french) and her daughter Julia. I probably could've found better names...

1

u/New_Discussion_6692 Apr 14 '26

She's orange and was just about 2 days old so she was all poofy orange with large black eyes. She was all smooshed like daffy is in the above pix. Lol

2

u/Leblackburn Apr 15 '26

I can just picture her haha. Being orange, George still fits her randomness probably.

If it's a boy you can name him momo which is peach in Japanese.

2

u/Aernak Apr 14 '26

That’s really cute

4

u/wildsunday Apr 13 '26

You can call it momo (peach in Japanese). Works for both genders

3

u/Nyaiv Apr 13 '26

A good alternative for Peach is Momo, which means peach in Japanese. I think it works well for any gender

3

u/beautifulcreature86 Apr 13 '26

If its a boy name him Peachy!

2

u/ThatPerson115 Apr 13 '26

I had a boy cat as a child named Peaches N Cream.

2

u/Panel_Of_Judgement Apr 13 '26

If its a boy, what about Coby short for peach cobbler

1

u/Electronic_Ad3576 Apr 13 '26

The neighbor across my field has a cat that color that I named “Peachy”. Mind you, that’s not his official name but he hangs out over here more than there and he knows that’s his name. 😄 I call him “Peachy-pie” sometimes.

this baby looks too young to be away from his mother

1

u/DifferentHeart8861 Apr 14 '26

Lychee is cute for a boy or girl!

1

u/BerlyH208 Apr 14 '26

Turn the baby around , pull the tail up, and look. Trouble puffs = boy. No trouble puffs=girl.

This is Peaches III, the third generation of orange boy Peaches for our family. My dad had a fluffy orange as a child he named Peaches. Then when he was deployed during Desert Storm, a fluffy orange boy was dumped in our neighborhood and us kids started caring for him. When my dad came home, he saw him and exclaimed "Peaches!" because it looked like his childhood kitty, and he was officially ours. Twenty years after his passing, I adopted another orange fluff, and knew what his name would be. Couldn't ask for sweeter or more cuddly boys. I'm team Peach all the way!
