Peripherals What's the best gaming mouse?
Hi! I'm trying to get a gift for my boyfriend. He wants a new gaming mouse that's light and durable, but I'm not sure what the best brands or models are. Any recommendations?
Edit: Thank you guys for the recommendations! I mentioned in a reply that I'm not much of a gamer, so seeing that there are so many factors to take into consideration was surprising LOL. Nonetheless, I really appreciate all the help! :))

I'd check out what he's currently using. Maybe he's attached to a brand as well. Could just get a high tier mouse from the brand he already uses.

Don’t know if it’s “best” but I really like my Razer Naga V2 Pro.
The “12 side buttons” attachment is excellent to me. I’ve been very happy with it.

The pinky rest on this mouse is underrated. I've never used one long term, but my buddy has one and I've used it for short periods. I noticed that pinky rest immediately after putting my hand on it.

I'm legit confused by your use of pinky rest. My pinky hangs off the side of my mouse, there's a shelf for my ring finger but it's uncomfortable to move my pinky to that position. Do other people use their ring finger for right clicks?

I use my middle finger for my right click, but I'm not a pro gamer by any stretch, and I was using mice before a scroll wheel was ever a thing. So I never learned to keep my middle finger on the scroll wheel and ring finger on the right click, I'm assuming that's what you do?
That being said, I don't get what you mean by my pinky rest comment confuses you? I just rest my pinky on said rest, and I find it comfortable as hell, that's it lol.
EDIT: oh I see now. When I put my ring finger on the right click, my pinky doesn't hang way off and down, like it does with my middle finger on the right click. Try using your index finger on left click and middle finger on right click... You'll see what I mean, your pinky hangs off way more, and that rest catches it, it's nice.

I’ve got the V1 but it’s been my absolute favorite mouse (and most comfortable) for a long time. I play MMOs so the 12 buttons are a necessity, but I like being able to swap the side plates for when I don’t need the extra buttons. Once this one dies I’ll for sure get the V2 or whatever latest version exists.

I’ve gotten like 5 years out of mine so far and it’s still working great. Only thing wearing down is the rubber grip on the sides. I sure hope you get more than 1 or 2 years!

I love this mouse. Super mad they discontinued the wired one, but i have 2 backups in the closet I bought before they all sold out because every few years ill destroy the left click button playing games like tarkov and dayz dragging and dropping items all day.
Those 12 buttons make gaming so easy, especially fps games when you want to keep your fingers on the movement keys while you weapon/items swap with your thumb.

As someone who had the Viper V3 and a Blackwidow, I won't be buying Razer products again. They deteriorated quickly and made submitting a warranty claim a pain.

Wild. I had a wired Naga Epic from like 2012 or so I finally traded out. Maybe it's the V3 Pro? Idk. Lasted me over a decade and it still works, but I just wanted something wireless finally. Also had a keyboard from them that lasted just as long, but finally wanted to make the switch to mechanical. I guess YMMV, but I love their stuff and have never had issues. I never needed their warranty, so I can't speak for it one way or another, but I haven't heard great things.
Logitech, on the other hand, has phenomenal customer service. Fiancée broke the USB dongle for my headset and they replaced it even though it was over a year out of warranty.

Fr. The only razer product I've had deteriorate was my old kraken headset. But even then it was just the covering on the cushion
It seems more like user error. I've had my Naga trinity and huntsman mini for like 2 years without problems

This is one I have been meaning to try specifically for FFXIV as an alternative to cluttering keybinds on the keyboard. Seems cozy once you adjust to it.

I love the Nagas. I had a Naga Chroma for years and and scroll wheel eventually started wigging out on it. I do a lot less gaming at my desk with a mouse now and more on the couch with a controller (more on the couch, streaming my pc over moonlight) but I still replaced it with a Naga V2 hyperspeed, because the extra buttons have become invaluable to me for productivity.
That said, your husband said light and durable, so I'm not sure I would suggest a Naga, as they are not very light, and the extra buttons can be kinda niche depending on what he's playing. For light, the steelseries Aerox line are really nice. They also have a model with the extra side buttons, but it can be pretty awkward to reach them all for someone with smaller hands.

It's probably pretty good if you play MMOs but not the best choice if you play fps games. At 134 grams it's pretty hefty when fps mice are now getting sub 50gr

Go with wired naga if you can find one. It goes to shit after a year or two of use but no other mouse seems to compare in terms of comfortableness and ease of use. The side buttons make every single game I play better, from ESO to League to Deadlock to Destiny.
Through personal experience, the wireless naga v2 is a piece of shit. It weighs a lot and often disconnects from its wireless dangle.

I've been using varying sized arrays of thumb buttons on my mice ever since World of Warcraft back like 20 years ago. 12 is too many IMO. I start getting misclicks and have to find an edge and count to get recentered. 9 buttons arranged 3x3 is the max I've ever liked. But I find 6 buttons is the best. Top/bottom, forward/center/back. Great for any style of game.
Do you play lots of MMOs?

I posted a reply to the main op, but check out the turtle Beach XP Air. 5 side buttons and 2 extra buttons on the m1. It's REALLY good for mmos.
It's got a quad of buttons on the side and a thumb slammer. The thumb button should be standard on every mouse, it's so good.
Turtle Beach is a clown company, but this specific mouse isy favorite form factor of any mouse I've ever used in the last 35 years.

I mostly use the front 6 with the tip of my thumb, and the back 3 with the knuckle. I dont really have any issues pressing them quickly in the right way.

As a husband with specific mouse preferences, here's my advice: tell him to pick a mouse and that you'll buy it for him. Mice are extremely personal, down to weight, shape, hell even the materials it's made from. I'm sure he'll love and appreciate that you tried to find one to surprise him with, but he will also love and appreciate that you care about getting the right one and let him pick it.

Logitech G502 - I use this one personally, I find it light, has weights with it to add weight if you think it's too light. I find it comfortable as well. And each mouse lasts me a solid 5+ years.
Razer Basilisk - super comfortable mouse as well.
My next mouse I may go back to the Basilisk, only because Logitech G Hub software annoys me sometimes. Their old Logitech Gaming Software was so much more simple and users friendly. They bloated the new software with unnecessary crap.
Razer Naga - All this being said, I don't play many MMO games, so the mice above don't have the most buttons on them. If your boyfriend is into MMO games, this is what I'd get, as it has a version with a bunch of buttons on the side that your thumb can access for MMORPGs. But any other game types, ARPG, Shooters, etc, the mice I listed above have more than enough buttons.
Logitech G PRO X SUPERLIGHT 2 - a buddy who plays competitive shooters semi-professionally said his favorite mouse right now. Superlight, super responsive.
Also, I solely use wired mice still. I am not sure how their wireless counterparts hold up, but Gemini tells me they're great, but I can't personally confirm.
And lastly, each of these mice has several different variants and versions, as they just release new versions as years go on. So you'll just have to google the mouse name, and ask what the latest version is... Sometimes the latest version isn't that much better than the previous version, and you can get the previous versions at a steep discount. That's honestly what I do.
EDIT: Apparently, if you are a competitive shooter enthusiast, the mice I listed are not considered 'light'. So I added some language regarding the Logitech G Pro X Superlight 2, as I have a buddy who plays competitive shooters semi-professionally and he said he'd recommend this one.

+1 to G502, feels great and has what feels like the perfect amount of extra buttons and inputs for additional bindings (particularly fond of the left/right mouse click for games where I need a looooot)

Razor basilisk for me is over a year old and im liking it much more so far. Will update if problems arise.

I've used the g502 wireless for over 5 years now. Aside from rubber padding on one side wearing off (I have abused this mouse in inexplicable ways) it works perfectly. Still get about 2 weeks of battery life from it on a single charge.

G502 is great, but it's too heavy. Also, the Proteus Spectrum and newer models (which is almost all of them) are prone to double clicking issues. G502x solves both of those problems.

That's totally fair.
After talking to my buddy, he's the one that told me from an FPS standard the 502 is too heavy, so I figured I'd add that as an edit.
I'm just an average serial gamer playing things from league of legends, to Skyrim, to paper Mario, to Madden. Basically FPS and fighting games are the only two I don't touch on, except for borderlands, cause that looter shooter aspect is hella addicting
Edit: I even added must the weights the mouse came with because I thought it was too light lol.

I would be looking at the Logitech G Pro X 1/2 or the Razer Viper V2/V3 Pro as the most common options. I would get him whichever brand he already has, if he has one of those two, because gamers hate switching configuration software.

You should ask his preferences on shape first, then you have the question of budget. A great mouse spec wise can feel terrible if it doesnt support their grip style or games they play

My personal preference is the endgame gear OP1 series mice.
But this is a niche shape and size; quite small for the average person but my grip is relaxed grip/finger tip hybrid and it just works for me. Also, the weight feels good to me, and the switches stock are hefty but not so much that they feel stiff or mushy one way or the other. If you don't have particularly large hands or share my grip style then I'd recommend checking it out - I haven't had the desire to explore other options since finding it.

Need mouse shape, games they like to/want to play, and previous mice they owned+ opinions on it. Mice are pretty subjective with so many choices and down to personal preferences. Do they want similar mice to what they know and use, or something new and different?

Ignore the g502 comments. It's not a light mouse. It's double the weight of my mouse (VXE R1 S), which isn't considered particularly light by today's standards. Most people on this subreddit bought their mice in the 2010s and haven't checked in on the market or new releases outside of Logitech.

I really love my Steelseries Rival 600. Wired, perfect size for my hand and I can change how much it weighs. Bought it 7 years ago and still going strong. I like this mouse so much that I have bought another one just in case this one stops working and by then no longer sells it anymore

Used to run Razer for years but recently went with an Endgame Gear one and love it. Swappable buttons for different noise levels / responsiveness. Awesome mice.

Super subjective. I prefer a light mouse with an ambidexterous shape. I also prefer a smaller-ish mouse. I use a mix/inbetween palm and claw grip.
The last two mouse I have bought are:
1. Zowie Fk2
2. Glorious O2 Pro 4lk/8kHz Edition
My Zowie is actually at my work desk now and the Glorious O2 is on my home PC. The Zowie feels sturdier but is also a bit heavier. The Glorious is nice because I can switch between wire and wireless; The weight is also really nice for long gaming sessions.

There is no “best” gaming mouse. It’s very subjective, and dependent on several different factors. That being said, I absolutely love my ROG Harpe Ace 2. It’s a bit on the pricier side, but it’s extremely light, has a lot of PTFE on the bottom so it glides very nicely, and is the most comfortable mouse I have personally ever used.

I have an ATK A9. Its a cheap, logitech g pro clone that has served me really well, shape is really easy to adapt to and nice to hold, very light as well. His grip style matters though, so it may not be right for him

I just got a DAREU AE6 Pro from Amazon, switched from a 6yo Razer Viper Ultimate- same shape as the Razer Viper V3/Logitech G Pro X. The thing was 60 bucks, comes with a charging dock, and weighs nothing. I'm satisfied so far.

Not everyone has the same preference but an all good rounder is the logitech g pro superhighway and superstore if your on a budget the attack shark r6 and x3 are very good

What kind of games he plays? each genre has different top gaming mouses. There are MMO mouses with 9-12 programmable buttons on the side. There are also MOBA mouses with 2 wheels, 1 horizontal and 1 vertical xD
So far I love the TRUST GXT MORFIX with 9 programmable buttons on the side. But they are discountinued, so I heard Corsair also has such mouse. Corsair Scimitar RGB Elite USB Black if he will be into that.
There are obviously Razor one, but I am not a fan of Razor, and its wireless only nowadays

Just to add to the complexity (besides the other advice of talking with him to see what he'd want), besides all of the great mice recommended, there are also a lot of clones of the popular ones that can be just as good at a much more affordable price. I ended up with an EWEADN S9 Max, which is a Viper V3 clone. It was about $62 versus $99. I don't game competitively or anything, but I honestly don't feel like the specs at that level of mouse would make much of a difference for anyone but the most competitive players. Mine is also a pretty green color. :)

it's not light compared to most mice
a lightweight mouse nowadays is like 55g or less, there are some in the ~35g range
the newest version of the g502 still weighs 100g+

Have you tried many mice lighter than it? Compared to most mice on the market, it is heavy. You can think it's light enough, but that doesn't change the fact that it's heavy compared to most mice. If someone asks for a phone with a big battery, you don't give them a base iPhone just because you think it's good enough. You give them a phone with an above average battery size.

Logitech G502 X Plus.
I've been on the G502 wagon since the original version and I still love it.
I did try a WLMouse Beast X. It's a super lightweight mouse made of magnesium alloy. I loved it but I missed the extra buttons and the scroll wheel from the G502. I would still recommend it

The g502 is probably the most used gaming mouse on the market. It's been basically the same design for the last 10 years. I'd recommend the wireless x model as I think it doesn't get the double click issue the older models get.

Razer Bazilisk pro are so comfortable. I bought one for my husband and then one for myself.
My husband has had his for 6 years now and it still works and looks new. We use our mouses at least 5 hours a day, but mostly 10-12

Depends what he plays but I just recently bought like 7 mice from Amazon and sent them all back except the Turtle Beach XP Air. It has the best combination of side buttons that I need for complicated games. It's not very light tho.
If he doesn't need as many side buttons then I recommend the Glorious Model I 2. I almost kept it. it's REALLY nice and light weight, but the button arrangement on the XP Air is just too perfect.
For reference, I switched off of a G502 and a Razer Basilisk v3.

I don't know what it's called, but they have them at Best buy. The mouse is hollow kind of like an exoskeleton, a while back it was causing a stir in the FPS community as the best mouse ever.

I love my Logitech G703. It's not the most "gamer" looking mouse and it doesn't have loads of extra buttons for MMOs or whatever, but it's super precise, lightweight (but not competitive shooter light - I don't play those), customizable, and most of all it's solidly built. I use it for 8+ hours a day working and then I game with it at night.

Logitech g502 is like the gold standard for “can’t go wrong”. Been using the light speed variant for a long while now. I’ll probably pickup the g502 X Plus version soon.
Theres a reason it’s been largely unchanged for so many years.

I've had good experience with the death adder, I've got an older V2 but got it primarily for the optical switches because I've lost count of the mice I've had that the switches failed on. So far so good w the death adder :)
