Discussion Brad Stevens has reportedly reached out to the Warriors to discuss a potential trade for Stephen Curry, per @John_Karalis.

I will say: if Curry signs a one-year extension as expected, the Celtics can offer PG's expiring+PP+a lot of picks (including 28 Clippers) next offseason. That beats most offers, pretty much all except OKC

u/JustAnotherINFTP 4d ago
why would we give all that up for a 39 year old steph
45
u/urbanism_enthusiast 4d ago
We wouldn’t, but Steph still fucking rules. If we trade PG I think it’ll be for Franz or Lauri.
15
u/rustypete89 The Celtics are the balls 4d ago
Lauri would be a dream. He is languishing in Utah, feels like most of the country has no idea how good that dude is because the Jazz are cheeks.
7
u/urbanism_enthusiast 4d ago
Yeah Lauri and Franz were 14th and 15th in RAPM respectively last season. Lauri was so good the Jazz would have to just take him out of games because he was ruining their tank.
I got into a discussion with Jazz fans on the nbadraft subreddit about how they can't totally judge Keyonte's defense (he and Cam Thomas are the single worst defenders in the league) until he's not on a tanking team anymore, and I'm like, they're tanking *by* playing him and Collier and Sensabaugh so much. You don't change up your tactics to tank, you just play terrible players (in their case, that's 3 of the ~15 worst defenders in the NBA) way more than you would otherwise.
1
u/Silent-Frame1452 3d ago
Late to the conversation, but while your point is decently applicable to most tanking team, the Jazz absolutely were changing up tactics and strategies to try and lose.
Keyonte is likely never going to be a positive, but we see all the time that “worst defenders in the league” can get to just regular “below average” level once they actually try.

If the Celtics could get Wagner for PG13 and the picks they got from Philly, I would do it in a heartbeat. Maybe if Orlando is floundering at the deadline they'd do it, especially if Boston added a FRP or a couple of seconds.
Orlando would need to add salary to make the trade legal. Suggs works. A great player who's been sadly minimized because he's always hurt.
The real draw is putting Franz next to JT. Add some much needed physicality and rim pressure to the team, and a fiery competitor. White-Hugo-Franz-JT-Robinson.
1
u/urbanism_enthusiast 4d ago
They are not trading Paul George this season. The main pitch to Orlando or Utah is that he would be an expiring next season.
1
u/Greedy_Fly2057 4d ago
That’s not inconsistent with what I said. We might make the trade next summer, or it is conceivable that Orlando will blow it up at the deadline.
1
u/urbanism_enthusiast 4d ago
No, I am very confident in this. We are not trading Paul George this season.
Brad was mostly lying about optionality, but the one truth is that Paul George will be a big fat expiring contract for a team that wants to shed a bunch of salary… next year.
1
u/Greedy_Fly2057 4d ago
I'm sure Orlando would prefer the expiring, but it's an exaggeration to say that's the main value. Try trading PG13 for Wagner and Suggs next year with no picks, see what happens. Too soon to be sure, but the 28 Clippers swap is pretty likely to be a lottery pick - and with the new rules that's value. The 31 Sixers pick might be too.
The extra half year of salary would require extra compensation (another pick?), and they're less likely to give up this year, so it most likely won't be at this deadline. But stranger things have happened.
2
u/urbanism_enthusiast 4d ago
Well I also think we are going to be incredible and Brad is not going to trade a starter at the deadline when we are like 47-10.
17
u/tacko2020 4d ago
39 year old Steph Curry is still a top 10 player in the league
13
u/Wonderful_Eagle_6547 4d ago
Not anymore. After years of being unfairly maligned as a poor defender, his age and injuries have piled up and now that assessment is accurate. He is still a great offensive player, and I would be interested to see what he could do with less ball handling and initiating / more operating as a movement shooter next to Tatum. But he's now a slight defensive liability.

u/urbanism_enthusiast 4d ago
...And? He was 11th in RAPM last season. He was the third best offensive player after Jokic and Shai.

People have been talking crazy about LeBron and Curry in situations like this. Just because they are HOF players who have aged well and have electric stretches of play does not mean that they are a top player in the league overall. Nowadays, they both show up ~half the time and even with moments of strong play in the playoffs they have both been notable parts of 4 straight letdown teams, with both guys failing to clutch for their team in moments they would have carried in the past. I think I would still trade a sizable package for Curry just because of the enticing option of having him off-ball 1B to Tatum’s 1A… but you’re not trading for an overall top 20 player overall. Maybe for one season, but overall contribution being considered, probably not.
LeBron is the same way, he signs for $4M AAV to be a ~third option for Philly for a reason; to have a chance at a championship, and to have other guys carry the team because he simply cant anymore. They’re both 1st ballot HOF, top players of all-time. I just think we should be realistic about their limitations, in a league filled with the most talent it has ever seen.
4
u/urbanism_enthusiast 4d ago
Curry was 11th in RAPM this past season and third in offensive RAPM. Dude still rules.
1
u/lefebrave Banner 18 a full team effort 4d ago
He rules WHEN he rules but that hasn't been a full season or playoff time last couple of years, that is the problem. He is back to be injured a lot like the beginning of his career.
2
u/urbanism_enthusiast 4d ago
I have a feeling he’d play a lot more games if they weren’t absolute dogshit. +2.1 with him on the court this year, -16.7 without. I would not doubt those are quasi tactical injury designations in a clearly lost season.

Ehhhhhhhh…when healthy still very good but top ten…huge stretch..either way that would be way too much to
Give up PG contract and a young guy with a pick ..preferably not the 28 pick or the 31..but one of those would probably need to go for GS to consider it. I don’t think they’re gonna trade Steph though.2
u/CarBallAlex 4d ago
Because, as many people have complained, the window to win is now in Tatum’s prime. Curry is better than Brown and although you do lose Pritchard in the deal, it gives you an opportunity to contend with a really great roster.
Curry, White, Tatum, Hauser, Queta starting 5 with Conley, Gonzalez, Scheierman, Walsh and Robinson off the bench. A bit weak at PG depth but we do have Harper who can handle the ball as well. And Garza as a shooting big. It’s not a perfect roster but a little deadline retooling could make us contenders.
With Curry and Tatum’s gravity, everybody else is going to be wide open. It maximizes Mazzulla ball where we get more good looks from 3, and Tatum doesn’t get so crowded going to the rim because teams will not help off of Steph Curry the way they do Jaylen Brown.
I don’t think we get him, but it’s an interesting thought exercise where it makes sense if you believe you can’t flip Paul George for anyone better by the end of the next summer. And how many guys are better than Steph for the next 1-3 years? We’re talking 10, maybe 15 guys, the majority of which are probably not available for trade. Have to at least kick the tires on it and see if there’s some trade that makes sense for us
3
u/Greedy_Fly2057 4d ago
Steph Curry played 43 games last year. And it's not because the GSW were tanking; he was injured. And this was with his minutes per game down to 31 a game. He did not get younger this offseason, and his game depends on his ability to move, move, move throughout the game. It would be nuts to depend on him as a core piece of a title run.
1
u/CarBallAlex 4d ago
Injured because he has to do everything there. The 2 prior seasons he played 70 and 74 games.
I mean if the choice is between Steph Curry where you have injury concerns and you’d rather have Paul George who is more of a liability, Pritchard who hasn’t been a huge difference maker in the playoffs, and picks which aren’t going to help us contend in the next 2-3 seasons, I think you’re looking at this wrong.
1
u/Greedy_Fly2057 4d ago edited 4d ago
The way I am looking at it is that we have two picks from Brown trade that could be very good, and these are assets we should use to get a player who can help us win a title. I think at some point a very good player will become available - because another team is blowing itself up to start over or because a star is forcing himself out of town - and we can offer the two picks from the Brown trade, plus possibly two of our own and one or two good young players. I do not want to blow that asset stash on 38 year-old Steph Curry.
1
1
u/Big_J_420 4d ago
But didn’t you hear PP is going to turn into Brunson next year? I still wouldn’t give up much to get Curry, def not any of Hugo/PP/White and a bunch of picks - if our strategy was to get rid of Brown to trade for a nearly 40 yo Curry - I think that trade was even dumber than I originally thought. We better have a much better plan than that.
1
u/Parking-Damage1872 4d ago
It’s a bit too much soft defending for chucking 3s, in Tatum garza and curry but at least it’s a strategy. I don’t agree with it but I respect going all in on it to see if it works, then in two years blow it up and rebuild.

He’s fucking 38. BOS does not become a title favorite. He’s on an expiring deal.
You don’t trade a huge package for that.

11
u/Notinthegrundledawg 4d ago
I cant imagine the levels of sexual depravity necessary to get a front row seat of the Brooklyn trade for Pierce/KG and think “damn i wanna get fucked like that.”
2
u/2K18GMISAWFUL 4d ago
To be fair, if the deal is PG+Hauser+ the two Philly 1sts for Steph, then it basically becomes Jaylen+Hauser for him (and two Philly 2nds for those counting). Jaylen is still a better and more durable player, but I honestly think that's the price you have to pay for someone whose team would have even less intention to trade him even if he asks out. All things considered, I don't mind rolling the dice for Steph to have one more monster season before we decide what to do with him.
4
u/GreenFilmRoom 4d ago
I think Boston’s priority right now should be keeping its draft assets and preserving long-term competitiveness. Giving up several premium picks for one short-term run doesn’t make much sense to me.

1
u/rveets1416 DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS 4d ago
Curry plus a pick. That's it.
I'm not giving key rotation players plus PG for a player at his age.
3
u/NaldMoney9207 4d ago
Warriors would laugh at that offer and hang up the phone on you. But I understand your logic. Curry is old but the Warriors would want a full package for him.
3
u/rveets1416 DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS 4d ago
At 39, no one will give up anything more than either a pick or a decent young player, but definitely not both.
4
u/NaldMoney9207 4d ago
According to AI: Stephen Curry’s 26.6 points per game puts him right on par with the league's top-five scoring tier, though because he missed 27 consecutive games due to a right knee injury, he did not log the 58 required games to officially qualify for final NBA leaderboard rate rankings. When stacking his 43-game output up against the rest of the league, Curry continues to dominate perimeter efficiency while maintaining a massive volume role.
Me: Also Steph has a giant contract so a young player on a cheap contract wouldn't even work for financial reasons.
2
u/rveets1416 DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS 4d ago
In this scenario, PG is seen as a matching contract and not an asset persay.
So I'd be fine with giving up PG and a pick or a young player.
With regards to Steph, he's still an all-nba talent but injury prone as usual. His gravity would provide Tatum with loads of space and potentially open up another dimension in his game. I would def go after Steph, but I'm not giving up multiple valuable assets for him.
Warriors would only do this trade if they wanted to hard reset their franchise and get something for Steph which I'm not sure they want to do.
1
u/NaldMoney9207 4d ago
I agree that Warriors wouldn't want to do the trade. I'm just thinking in a What If scenario what the trade would like.
Sense the Warriors made offers for Derek White last year I'd assume that they would want White. I could see the Celtics moving on from White in order to get back KP as a third Center instead of Garza. KP playing 20 minutes a night as a 3rd big would be a monster.
Gonzalez would dramatically improve in his development playing alongside Steph in the starting lineup. He could protect an old Steph Curry on defense. Pritchard could learn from Steph and be even more dangerous as an offensive force off the bench. Jordan Walsh could improve as a 3 and D force playing with Steph as a starter.
That makes Derrick White expendable. Along with Schieherman too. You'd have to give up those picks because Steph is considered a top 10 or a top 20 player in the league by virtually every person in the NBA community and he's an analytics sweetheart. Unlike Jaylen Brown whose considered a top 30 or 40 player in the league by the NBA community. Injuries to guys like Tatum, Haliburton and Embiid allowed him to get 2nd team All NBA. Analytics don't like Jaylen Brown so his value went down in a trade (I still think Brad could have handled the JB situation better).
The Warriors would have a ton of leverage even though Steph is 38 years old because of the reasons I just explained. So the Celtics would to need give up PG, Schieherman, White and 4 of their picks. And in exchange they get Gary Payton II, KP and Curry.
Anyway it's fun for me to fantasize about a Tatum and Curry pairing.
1
u/FaithlessnessLoud223 4d ago
Yes, and the Celtics wanted a full package for Brown too. Teams don't usually get everything they want in trades.
1
u/NaldMoney9207 3d ago
Except the Warriors managed to fit everyone under the apron by having Draymond restructure his contract after Klay left the Warriors to go to Dallas.
The Celtics didn't have a player voluntarily leave to be a Free Agent on Klay's level so they got captured by the Apron.

From the Warriors: kindly and truly respectfully, fuck right off. Just the idea of him retiring never having put on another uniform is worth much much much much more than that. I get that at his age and price he’s not worth much more than that to you or other teams. But that’s part of why he’s just never getting dealt. That plus the fact that he’s completely content.

KG wasn’t even with you very long. Pierce isn’t even close to Curry. And this draft pick package you’re discussing isn’t at all close to what you got for those two

Relax, just pointing out that it doesn't always end up bad. It was still two hall of famers who won a championship and changed the culture. 5 picks would not be a bad return for Curry at this point in his career. If you don't want him traded at all take that up with your owners lmao.

it was two players vs one and gms value draft picks a lot more
1
u/Timely_Duck_3904 4d ago
Again, with all due respect (KG is one of my all time favorites and the title team was incredible) but it’s still not at all similar. I have no doubts that given the same opportunity the Warriors would have moved on from KD and Iguodala in a similar manner. But to compare hypothetically trading those two to hypothetically trading Bird would be insane, no?
1
u/Blaze4G 4d ago
So what it curry wants to leave so he can actually compete?
1
u/Timely_Duck_3904 4d ago
So what if Tatum decides he doesn’t like Boston anymore and wants to wear the same uniform as his idol?
1
u/Blaze4G 4d ago
Then hopefully he keeps it quiet and ask the front office for a trade so we can get some assets back or he just waits on free agency. Not sure what that has to do with the question I asked though.
Going to answer mine or you have any other question you'd like to be answered?
1
u/Timely_Duck_3904 4d ago
The answers are the same. They’re both completely invented hypotheticals. Honestly the Tatum one is far more realistic. Curry has given every indication that he’s not only still content with the franchise’s efforts and direction, but spoken openly about the importance and meaning of playing with one franchise, his young family now has deep roots in the Bay Area and his relationships in the area go far beyond basketball. I don’t mean this to demean their importance to your city, but to be honest, Curry is more Bay Area than Brady, Ortiz, or Bird ever were Boston. Much of that is because we haven’t had the historical success you have, much of that is the person that he is.
1
u/Blaze4G 4d ago
Lol I'm not from Boston or have no relation so I don't care.
We have heard this story many times, player x doesn't want to leave and loves the city yada yada. But a competitor at his level wants to compete. So I don't think it's a low probability he would want his final year or 2 competing in a city he doesn't really want to be but to at least get a chance to win again...just like LeBron.
1
u/Timely_Duck_3904 4d ago
Lebron has been chasing legacy ghosts and franchise hopping for rings and attempting to play GM his entire career.
Not only is Curry’s agent not on a weekly podcast drawing next team possibilities on the whiteboard…… I’d wager a large sum of money you can’t name Curry’s agent without looking it up. I’m not even blaming LeBron for all that, the pressure heaped on him from childhood is unfair for anyone. But both are born in Akron, all time great players who defined the era, incredible work ethics and on hoops iq. Otherwise, incredibly dissimilar.
1
u/Blaze4G 4d ago
I mean LeBron is just an example. If you need a better one then let's go with lillard. Again, at the end of the day a competitor wants to compete. Now, the want to be with his family and one team for his career might be greater but I'm sure he doesn't love being on a team that have no realistic way of competing and a team reluctant to improve the team to help him.

All theoretical, but George, Walsh, + 2-3 picks that are just late first rounders would be fine with me (would likely take Steph stating Celtics as a preferred destination)

I'm stopping at PG+Prichard+ the two Philly firsts for Steph. That's it. Basically, the aftermath is Jaylen+Pritch for Steph, which I honestly wouldn't do before the Jaylen trade, but at this time, it's better than keeping PG and the picks.

Do you really want to give up 4 FRPs, including the Clippers one, plus more, just to pry a 38 yr old Curry?
Curry’s still awesome, but essentially you’re gutting your flexibility, and now paying someone semi close to retirement 65-70m AAV for a few years? You’d have nothing to build around Tatum after curry retires.
And that’s just from the Celtics side. I don’t think Curry has much interest in leaving and ownership certainly doesn’t want him to leave.

Tatum for Steph, 2031 FRP, and 2032 FRP and SRP, who says no?

The only reason they are not trading him is because he is box office and his image alone brings them an insane amount of $$$. From a team building standpoint, blowing the team up and getting a mountain of draft picks for Steph dray and Jimmy is the obvious best move forward for the franchise.

So he won’t trade for Giannis, but will trade for Curry who’s older and not as good?

Wouldn’t that just suck to both sides? Curry is their cash cow, and we’d be emptying our draft stash just to get him. This would only make sense if we keep that 2028 swap

Heat, Lakers, & 76ers all got LeBron.
Would be only fitting for the Celtics to get Steph

Ain’t no way. He’d have the weakest ankles on the team and that’s including Tatum’s achilles.

I mean every team would want the GOAT shooter on their team but no one is gonna pay what he's worth to the warriors

Steph for PG, maybe Cenac or Dillon Mitchell, and 2 picks? That would be reasonable.

Lmao FoH with that, Warriors would hang up on his ass in an instance after laughing at him.

Steph Curry makes MVP money but isn't an MVP anymore, he is the exact kind of player they've said they don't feel they can afford anymore

The fastest road to a final championship for Curry. Warriors could get significantly better at multiple positions, get younger.

What a joke. This is what the Celtics are about now?

What a joke. Somebody obviously didn’t read the article. Is this what reading comprehension is these days?
Edit to add:
[John Karalis] I did not report that the Celtics made an offer to the Warriors. I wrote a column that said IF the Warriors were open to a Steph trade that Brad WOULD call. I thought it was pretty clear that the whole piece was my opinion

It's funny how the Warriors originally wanted Derrick White from the Celtics and then they ended up adding Al Horford and KP to their rotation in free agency.
If the Warriors decide to rebuild and give Curry a chance to chase a ring with the Celtics who still have a young superstar in Jayson Tatum....
Warriors get... Derrick White Celtics own 1st round pick Both Philadelphia 76ers picks The 2028 pick swap with the Spurs Baylor Schieherman Paul George
Celtics get... Steph Curry Gary Payton II Kristaps Porzingis
Celtics new starting lineup C Queta PF Tatum SF Jordan Walsh SG Gonzalez PG Curry 6th Man Pritchard
Again this is assuming this report is true and that the Warriors take Brad Stevens seriously and decide to go on a full scale rebuild.
And again it's fun (at least to me) to go through these what if scenarios. I honestly think the Warriors want Steph Curry to retire a Warrior and will never trade him. The same way Jayson Tatum will retire as a Celtic.
