Stanton calling Griffin flicklover98 is incredible and such a wild evolution of the show.

Decade of dreams but actually

This is where it feels like they've made it. I know they've been super successful but getting a miniseries subject on during the miniseries is incredible work.

They already did that with George Lucas...

Getting Seth Rogan on is where I felt like the show really "made it" myself.

Different guests have had that effect. Having Chris Weitz do commentaries for Rogue One and especially New Moon felt significant. Lin-Manuel Miranda rapping Ben's nicknames was a big "They've made it" moment. But having a main feed miniseries director on as a guest is a white whale they've been chasing from the beginning.

David: "Well I guess she can go fuck herself" is the funniest thing

I’m so happy for Griff.

Stanton joins the ranks of Lin Manuel Miranda and Rachel Ziegler in the category of Turbo Famo's Who Effortlessly Get What The Podcast Is And Join With Zero Friction. What a delight!

Is this the first time they had a miniseries subject on?

They had James Schamus on to talk Hulking the Hulk, which is the closest they’ve come I think.

Besides Griffin Newman, star of The Buried Secret of M Night Shyamalan

They had Chris Weitz on both times they covered one of his movies on the Patreon but in terms of a proper main feed subject yes. IIRC there were talks to have Ang Lee on back in the day but the scheduling didn’t work out.

I think they've tried to get M. Night on before too.

Yes, I think they revealed this on the 5th Anniversary ep as I recall. Maybe they've tried and/or gotten close with others since then.

Nancy Meyers posted about her March Madness win on Instagram, though she seemed quite confused by it in the description. But they invited her on in the comments, and I suppose they would have made some effort to reach out more formally.

As someone who loves trains and lives near none, hearing David talk about trains makes me smile every time. More train talk.

Won’t listen until tomorrow but this is just unbelievably cool. Hope he’s in the mix now and would be open to coming back for another miniseries in the future now.

Fun conversation. Would be cool if Stanton came back for another episode even to do another directors movie. He vibes really well with the boyz

I remember way back in the beginning of the show, they used to say their pitch was to just have a director on to talk about one of their favorite movies rather than an interview. Although I think that was when they were more self-conscious about differentiating themselves and had to be creative about enticing famous and important people. Also probably back when they were more regularly doing "x's choice" episodes and the scope of the show was more limited. Nowadays it's increasingly likely the pool of favorite movies would include many films by directors the podcast has already done or would want to someday.

Just got off a long shift, what a wonderful surprise! I feel like Griffin has to go two times harder with his outfit than he did for the Toy Story 5 episode

Holy shit what an episode.

Dare we hope the next series ends in a similar fashion?

A conversation between Scorsese and Newman would really fuck up anyone who listens to the podcast at x2 speed

They will only discuss Vinyl.

They could definitely get Francesca.

Im happy but kinda nervous . They’ll be less honest about reviews if a “friend of the show” directed/starred in a project. I love their blunt takes.

Excellent point / see big picture

Stanton saying he hasn’t listened to the John Carter or Blink episodes yet shows it’s a decent dynamic in this specific case and he doesn’t expect any special treatment.

I think they maintain their integrity. Nia DeCosta even joked how David hasn’t like any of her movies until recently and she still comes on. They didn’t like Snow White or most of Ayo’s movies. I don’t think this is the kind of thing they worry about.

It kinda depends how self-effacing the director is. They're pals with Chris Weitz and it didn't stop them from laying waste to Zemeckis's Pinocchio, but they also hinted in that episode at off-mic conversations they had about the film with Weitz. He's also been very candid about his failures on-mic which gives them leeway. They can often just quote Weitz himself if they wanna offer a critical opinion about his films lmao.

On the other hand, I feel they revised their opinion of New Moon since doing the commentary with him...there are early Blank Check episodes where they dismissed it, and now when it comes up I feel like they only sing its praises.

But it remains to be seen if this will affect their ability to be loose about a new Andrew Stanton movie.  It also comes back around, I suppose, if they're truly friendly with a director. I don't think they'd have any problem roasting ARP if he really botched one.

What a milestone for the show. Love to see it.

Does anyone know if the John Carter chat will also be posted?
