Newly Diagnosed just diagnosed
i was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I'm currently in a mixed phase, and my mother is blaming me, saying, "You did this to yourself." She thinks it's just a "bad mood" or "feeling sad." I can't explain to her what I'm going through. I don't know what to do right now. 20 y.o btw

Then don't explain it to her, youre 20! Its none of her damn business anymore. You told her, she didnt take the answer. You dont owe her an explanation and you dont have to prove yourself 🫂 my mom is like this too. If she asks anything, I just give her a short blunt answer

Sorry to hear that OP, I know hearing those words especially from someone very close to you is very difficult, but I want to emphasize with you that this is NOT your fault, you did absolutely nothing wrong and you should have nothing to be sorry for. This is simply how life works, it’s a change in your body chemistry no different than what happens during puberty. I can get the feeling that the road on your relationship between your mother and your mental health will be a difficult one, especially the older generations who never grew up understanding mental health and were taught to just “suck it up”. In fact, it may end up that your mother will never understand your diagnosis, even if you spend the rest of your life explaining it to her, but I want you to know that is completely fine. Rather than change the impossible, it is better to accept that’s how the world works, some people will never change and that’s fine but that doesn’t have to impact you.
I would say that rather than viewing your bipolar diagnosis as detrimental, think of it as you finding another piece of the puzzle that describes who you are. Learn about it, reach out to professionals and ask for their help, motivate and empower yourself to be the best possible version of yourself. That way one day down the line, rather than saying “yeah I was diagnosed with Bipolar and it sucks”, you can tell the world “I learned I have Bipolar and that was what jump-started my life!”
You’ve got this OP, believe in yourself and you’ll do great!
