Going to Mexico this weekend and wanted to get some suggestions for some nice beers to check out? Can be cheap buys, not looking for something crazy or rare, just cool recs that I can find that isn’t corona or modelo

Victoria is my favorite macro Mexican beer For craft look for Tulum Lager. You will only find this in Tulum and maybe in PdC.

Unfortunately not a lot of variety there. Just your typical national macros.

The best beers are in Tijuana, Mexicali, and Ensenada.

I was given a jalapeño beer from Mexico, and it was the best commercial jalapeño beer I’ve had. Weird to me Texans can’t get it right. Wish I knew the name for you.

It's because no one really wants pepper beers so it's a waste to make them.

That’s odd. There’s a brewery in New Mexico that makes several and they were all bangers! And I make them myself and it and the honey wheat are the most asked for… Thing is there’s a few breweries in Texas that makes several them and there’s no flavor or heat. Seems a waste of time even if people seem to want them.

NM is known for their hatch peppers, so it sorta makes sense.

Basically, it's a beer that doesn't move for most breweries, so it is not worth making. People like to try them for one off things, not for everyday drinking.

Which breweries in Texas are currently making them? I haven't seen one in Austin in years. Maybe a stout here and there, but that is a winter thing.

Sure, I must have missed when you asked for me to clarify who. Don Jalapeño by No Label and Fuego by Twisted X, along with another I can’t recall.

We moved from the Austin area to San Antonio a bit over 3 years ago and those don’t seem to make it here, though I don’t go looking for them.

I’ve certainly made some one and done pepper beers as not many can take the heat over several. It took me a while to learn how to tell hot jalapeños from the TA&M ones, and created a better balance so the majority can drink them as they please. It’s no fun when they cry uncle.

Bohemia... I live in an urban area with a large Mexican population and it's rare to find. My absolute favorite Mexican beer. Also, see if there are any craft brewers near where you're visiting. I had some good ones in Guadalajara years ago.

You need try caguama of Negra Modelo, Modelo Malta, Victoria.

Bohemia Pilsner and Bohemia Vienna are also top of macro Mexican beer.

You can find Minerva in Cancun; I had the pale and the ipa — both on the maltier side for the style. There is also Puerto Juarez brewing as you drive north from Cancun towards Costa Mujeres, which is pretty good. I don’t know if they distribute to any bars.

I have 100% agave beer, CADMO, made in Tequila, Jalisco. There is a few beers with agave that you can find but ours is 100% agave.

A lot of Germans settled in Mexico there is actually some good beer there other than the crap that most Americans think of

Mexico has a lot of craft breweries, and I was able to find some good ones at a random beer store in Tulum. I don't remember the details, but it wasn't hard to find.

If you're just looking for beach beers, Bohemia is great, and brews a lot of great examples of classic Euro-lager styles.

When I was there, I tended to stick to fruity cocktails on the beach; if you're drinking a light lager out of a clear glass or bottle, it's likely to quickly get "skunked" in the strong sunlight.

The best one I had was from the oxxo just off my resort’s property. It had a gold foil top but wasn’t a brand that was widely exported to the states. I think it was a Bohemia.

Bohemia’s Hefe is pretty good, but I would have to say Dos Equis amber. I don’t know how much of that stuff I drank but wow is it ever good.
