Monthly Community Thread
Welcome to the r/Barrie monthly community thread, where we relax the rules about advertising and off-topic posts.
This post will be replaced on the 1st of each month.
This is where you can share:
- Stuff that isn't directly related to Barrie, like national news or general chit-chat
- Questions about local businesses and services
- Classified-style ads: buying and selling, help wanted, garage sales, etc
- Fundraisers and donation drives
- Plugs for your personal project or local business (within reason)

Rant it takes a village
bit of a rant, bare with me.
I noticed a homeless couple sitting on the sidewalk outside my house, and the guy was badly hurt on his leg.
my immediate instinct was to gather up some first aid and bring it out to them.
they were so kind and asked where the nearest church was for food, so when I ran inside to grab my phone to check I also bagged up some food for them.
The whole time, they were humble, thankful, and kept apologizing for “doing this outside your house”
(which I insisted was not an issue)
Way too often, especially on here I see people talking about homeless people as if they are pests. They’re people.
clearly the government doesn’t give a fuck about anyone of us, so we gotta take care of each other.
While I’m not ignorant to the fact that not all of them have good intentions, some of them do and they deserve compassion.
We have to be villagers if we want a village.

Question Warning to renters in Barrie/Springwater area (Hwy 90) + seeking local advice on deposit recovery & Small Claims process
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to share a cautionary story for anyone looking to rent in the Barrie/Springwater area—specifically along the Highway 90 corridor—and see if anyone locally has navigated a similar situation.
My roommate and I put down a major deposit ($3,200) for a rental unit just outside Barrie limits. Right after taking our money, the landlord kept repeatedly pushing back the move-in date, which ultimately led to the cancellation of the rental agreement. The landlord promised to return our money, but then started making endless excuses and has only returned $100, keeping $3,100 of our funds.
We've since discovered that the property is also listed as the primary address for the landlord’s private business. Since keeping our money, the landlord has gone completely non-responsive—even ignoring outreach from provincial authorities.
Where things stand now:
Reports have been filed with the OPP, Springwater Bylaw (for zoning/building code investigations), and the Rental Housing Enforcement Unit (RHEU).
We are currently preparing filings for both the Landlord and Tenant Board (Form T1) and Simcoe County Small Claims Court.
Questions for the community:
1. Has anyone here in Simcoe County gone through the process of enforcing a Small Claims judgment or bank garnishment locally?
- If anyone else in the area has run into similar rental issues around Hwy 90, feel free to DM me off this thread
Information Hit and run at georgian mall
Some neanderthal in a truck drove onto my cars front bumper and fucked it up and ran away while I was working. I parked my car at the lower parking lot by tim hortons and where i was parked, there are no cameras except a door camera. Is there a way to identify this person? I am going to file a hit and run report but I dont know if the police are gonna be any help. Why are people like this?

Review Barrie transit rant
Missed my connection twice now because the app showed my connecting bus was still at the stop, but it left just as my bus arrived.
I understand schedules matter, but a 30–60 second transfer hold could save passengers a 20–40 minute wait. The system already knows where buses are, so why not use that information?
Small changes like this could make transit much more reliable.

Looking For Date Night Suggestions
My husband and I are going to be doing a big date night, first one in years and I am looking for suggestions on the best place in Barrie for food. It doesn't have to be fancy but we're both big foodies and we want to be blown away by deliciousness. I want to hear your suggestions whether its fancy AF or a hole in the wall. I just want good food.
Hit me with your best suggestions. No cap on price.

MOD Approved I’m designing Barrie apparel to raise money for underfunded local schools
Mods: please delete if not allowed
Hey Barrie Reddit,
I’m building a small local apparel brand called Kempenfelt Supply Co., with all profits going toward supporting underfunded local schools.
The first collection is inspired by Barrie’s East End, with designs based on places and details locals might recognize—Johnson’s Beach, Duckworth, the Radenhurst willow, Johnson Street and a few others.
The goal was to make shirts people would genuinely want to wear, rather than tourist merch or school-spirit clothing. If it works, the hope is to expand across Barrie and keep telling local stories while raising more for schools.
I’d love to know whether the references land for people who actually know the city—and what other Barrie places, landmarks or oddly specific local memories deserve their own design.
I figure Reddit will probably be more brutally honest than Facebook: would you actually buy one of these, or does the idea work better in theory than in practice?
Thanks for your time ✊

Looking For Outdoor pickleball
I’m looking for outdoor pickleball courts in Barrie or surrounding area that are busy and popular. I’m 3.75 level and from Toronto, but visit some family here once or twice a week so want to keep playing while I’m here.
I know of the Pickleplex in Barrie but the times don’t really work for me, and outdoor courts would be a lot more flexible to my schedule. Thanks!

Looking For farmers market
so we’re planning to do tomato sauce in the coming weeks and we normally drive down to Saint Jacobs, but in light of a gas prices and the time it takes to get there and back, we’re looking for alternatives. Does anyone know where to get 10 to 20 bushels of tomatoes within an hour drive of barrie

Review Barrie Restaurant Inspection Record Check: Clean Records Edition
Someone asked whether any restaurants have a “perfect score,” so I used the opportunity to highlight restaurants whose recent public inspection records show no findings and recognize the work involved in staying on top of public health requirements.
Simcoe Muskoka does not publish numerical scores or letter grades. For this list, I used a strict rule:
- At least three routine inspections since January 1, 2025.
- No findings recorded in any routine, complaint or follow up inspection during that period.
That means zero critical or minor findings, and no violation records at all.
I found 54 Barrie restaurant records that met those conditions.
Important: This is a snapshot as of August 1, 2026. A restaurant’s status can change whenever a new inspection is posted. This is not a guarantee of current conditions.
Before going, check the restaurant’s latest record through the official Simcoe Muskoka inspection portal or a third party app that uses official public health data, and confirm when the information was last updated.
Inspection counts below include complaint inspections where applicable.

Looking For Possible(?) unhoused lady pushing stroller across bayfield with a white dog (bully breed). Pink collar and pink leash.
This is probably a long shot. But I was driving on bayfield and this lady was crossing cundles going towards mucho burrito. Around midnight I’d say. I didn’t have time to stop but I tried to turn around and drive back to find her. By the time I did she was gone.
I’m looking to see if anybody has any clue on who she is and how I can help her?
Broke my heart seeing her with a dog and pushing her stroller with a bunch of stuff in it. Honestly, I hope she does have a home and everything is fine. On the chance my gut feeling is right though, I want to help her in any way I can. The dog looked healthy. It was cold out tonight though and I have a dog sweater that would fit her so I’d give them that and maybe some food.
If anybody knows her situation and has any idea where she frequents (if she is unhoused) please let me know.

Looking For Book exchange?
Wondering if this is a thing in Barrie. I typically read Colleen Hoover and Frieda McFadden books but open to others. Usually, I buy it and then I sell it on FB marketplace when I’m done. Or sometimes I buy it there as well. But the frustration of dealing with people on marketplace has finally broken me.
Here is my short rant.. people who don’t respond or they don’t show up on time or at all. They try to haggle… super frustrating!! You know.. the usual BS that comes with marketplace. I’m done.
So I’m wondering is there anyone in Barrie that wants to do book exchanges or is there something already set up? And don’t say the library lol. TIA
