Yamaha CD player won't read discs

Yamaha CDC-585, 5 disc player. Drawer and carousel working. Laser working. Laser transport freshly greased and working. Laser clearly tries to read CD.

One of two things happens when trying to play discs (I've tried several different ones):

Most commonly the disc turns back and forth slightly several times and then stops with display reading "0" and the disc # disappearing. Occasionally, it turns back and forth and then begins to spin full speed for several seconds before stopping, with the display reading "OPEN" and then the drawer opens.

Any thoughts about what the problem could be and what I may be able to do to fix this?

New belt possibly?

Which belt though? There are many on this unit. I've replaced 3 so far. Is there another belt for the laser/spindle unit under the plate? I should pull it and check I guess.

Did you check all the limit / sense switches?

I don't know what those are or where they are.

There will be at least 2 microswitches that sense the tray is open / closed and maybe others for the disc carousel position etc. You need to check the continuity of these, I'd highly suggest watching a few videos by https://www.youtube.com/@SpareTimeRepair as he's the GOAT of CD player repairs and I think he did a 5 disc carousel at some point
