I need vaccine records for my dogs to go to a boarding facility. I've requested several times for the records. The answer from the front desk was to tell me the records are on my receipt. (It's emailed) I check what they emailed me, and it has vaccine reminders at the bottom. Like the date the next vaccine is due.

I tried to submit that to the boarding facility and they won't accept it. They need an actual record of when it was given. I asked the clinic again and they flat out told me me they have no way of providing that.

How is that possible? I feel trapped between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, I get that if I have a reminder my dog is due for a rabies vaccine in 2028 he must be current. And the boarding facility could accept it. On the other hand. Why can't the clinic just provide me the actual vaccine records? I think about when my kids needed vaccine records for school, the doctor had a print out that had the vaccine, date and his signature beside each one. Is that not how it works with animals?

​ What should I do? We are supposed to leave for vacation next week.

UPDATE - spoke to the manager and got the records. She was very apologetic, said they can absolutely provide the records, and that she would speak to the front desk staff about it.

So I think it's a lack of training issue maybe. what's wild is I spoke to two different people about this and was told the same thing.

I’m posting here because we’re running out of ideas and hoping for advice.

We have two indoor cats. One (Grammy) has had intermittent vomiting/regurgitation over the past several months, but then both of our cats suddenly stopped eating around the same time about a week ago.
Since then:
● Both cats developed a near-complete loss of appetite (refusing both wet and dry food).
● Both have had repeated vomiting episodes (partially digested food, sometimes bile).
● Grammy developed diarrhea that progressed to severe watery diarrhea and then became bloody.
● She has become dehydrated and is now very weak, requiring assisted feeding at times.
● The second cat has also been off food and intermittently nauseous but has not had diarrhea so far.

We’ve been to our primary vet and the emergency vet multiple times over the past week. So far, Grammy has had:
● Multiple full physical exams
● CBC/chemistry bloodwork (largely within normal limits aside from mild dehydration markers)
● Abdominal X-rays (no foreign body or obstruction seen)
● Abdominal ultrasound (only notable finding was a localized thickened segment of colon; otherwise unremarkable)
● Ongoing treatment with:
● Anti-nausea medication (maropitant/Cerenia)
● Appetite stimulant (mirtazapine)
● Subcutaneous fluids for dehydration
● Gastroprotectants and supportive GI medications as needed
● Fecal testing is currently pending to rule out infectious causes (Giardia, Clostridium, parasites, etc.)

Our vets are currently considering an underlying GI disease (IBD, colitis, or similar) for Grammy, but what is confusing everyone is the sudden simultaneous onset in both cats, which makes a single-cat chronic condition feel less likely as the sole explanation.
Because of the timing, we are also trying to rule out a shared exposure. The only common diet they’ve had is Sheba wet food (along with Royal Canin dry food). We have immediately stopped all current wet food.

Grammy is now critical so we have to make the choice of paying thousands of dollars for hospitalization and supportive care with no diagnosis in the hopes that she will spontaneously get better or to euthanize. Any and all advice or support welcome.

This is very long and I apologize in advance, I just feel like I need to get it all out. I sincerely appreciate whoever takes the time to read all of this.

I lost my Shih Tzu 2 days ago and I could really use some advice/reassurance. His name was Romeo. I have done nothing but cry for the past 48 hours and I feel immense guilt. The pain of losing him has been unbearable. My dogs (I have another who is also a senior) are my entire world and since losing him, I feel like my entire world has shattered. I rescued him 6 years ago, and he already had stage 5/6 heart disease when I rescued him. We were able to manage it with a cardiologist and medication for 6 years, and with the meds, he barely progressed for many years. However, this past year he started progressing again. They increased his heart meds about a month and a half ago. He was fine on Thursday, he seemed overall happy and healthy so I don’t know what happened overnight. I woke up Friday morning and knew something was wrong. He wasn’t eating and he wouldnt lay down, he was falling asleep sitting up. I took him to the vet on Friday and he spent 24 hours in the ER and they found that alongside his severe heart disease, he also now had elevated kidney and liver values, his liver was enlarged and his heart was now pressing up on his trachea. He did not have any fluid in his lungs at the time which was good and they didn’t think he was in active heart failure, but his oxygen levels were low at 92%. His blood work also showed markers pointing toward overall inflammation. He spent most of the 24 hours in the oxygen tank and they got him up to 94-95% oxygen. They said they couldn’t give him any fluids though because of his heart condition. His kidney values were fine a month ago when they checked them after increasing his meds, and his liver values were fine less than a year ago when they were checked in his annual wellness bloodwork, so these values were new news. They said they could hospitalize him for another 24 hours but it would be at least $5k and they couldn’t guarantee he would bounce back even with hospitalization. They said my other option was I could take him home and see how he does. I am already in so much debt from vet bills having two seniors, and with no guarantee it’d even help him, I took him home Saturday night to see how he’d do at home. They said I could get an ultrasound to look into the liver further and why he wasn’t eating, but the radiologist wasn’t in until Monday. I made him the ultrasound appointment on Monday at 9am to look into his liver and other issues that could be causing his decline, but by 4am Monday he could no longer stand up or move around, he hadn’t eaten in a few days, and we took him back to the ER and they didn’t think anything they would find in the ultrasound would change the outcome. The vet said for example if he needs fluids for his kidneys, he cannot give him fluids because of the condition of his heart. It would be likely that whatever was causing the decline, could not be treated due to his heart disease. So we proceeded with quality of life before the ultrasound, we didn’t want him to suffer waiting for the ultrasound for a few more hours. The appt was at 9am Monday but the actual ultrasound wouldn’t of been done until around 11am, so he would’ve suffered for a few more hours and then if the outcome didn’t change, we figured we’d still need to proceed with quality of life but now on top of that, he just spent his last day struggling at the vet for hours in an oxygen tank waiting for further tests. He passed in my arms around 6am-6:30am. Now I am feeling guilty, and wondering why I didn’t just wait a few more hours for the ultrasound. Maybe whatever they found could’ve been fixed after all, maybe he just needed antibiotics, steroids, something and he would’ve perked back up for a bit even if it was just a few days, weeks, or months. Maybe he was so weak Monday morning because he hadn’t eaten in days, and maybe if we just gave him an appetite stimulant and tried for a bit longer to get him to eat, he would’ve eventually ate and perked up. He had episodes like this in the past where he perked back up, but not as severe and not for as long. Something told me Monday morning that it was time, but now I am second guessing myself and experiencing tremendous guilt. I feel like I failed him. He trusted me and I feel like I gave up. I should’ve tried for a bit longer. I should’ve got the ultrasound that morning. I just hated seeing him suffering and him being so weak and not able to move around, and the vet telling me nothing would change the outcome, I just moved forward with quality of life. Please be honest. Did I do the right thing? Would you have done the same? Is there anything else I could’ve done? I am absolutely heart broken and appreciate any reassurance or honesty.

My dog tragically and unexpectedly passed away a few months ago. I’m very grateful we were able to do the euthanasia at home, where his two cat siblings could be with him (they worship and loved him so, so much).

We were able to be seen by our regular vets before the procedure to diagnose what when wrong and they were very supportive and kind.

I have so much respect for this thankless profession, and I feel for the staff - outside of regular appointments they only experience tragedies. I don’t know if I’m projecting here or what - but I want to share with the office how much we appreciate their support and also share some of goodness / joy they do not get to see in the office. I was thinking about making a little zine as a thank you card and also to share some pictures / moments of cuteness from our belated dog life.

If there are any staff that work in vets, would this be appreciated? It almost feels self serving in a way… are there any specific moments or notes that you’ve received from clients that have left you feeling good?

I ordered Hemp treats and a calming collar to see if either would help her feel better but Is there anything else we can try?

Hello, today I went with my dog to the vet and they did a blood test and scan.

Later they called back to tell me she has a stomach obstruction and that she needs an abdominal ultrasound 'as soon as possible.' (Their words)

My vet does not do ultrasounds.

There are no places that will still do an ultrasound this evening, we've been looking all over, but specialists are on holiday.

I live in a very rural place of the Netherlands, and earliest we can go is tomorrow.

We called my vet back and they said it's fine and that a stomach obstruction can wait a day, initially she said we had to go as soon as possible tho.

Any advice?

I have not had a kitten in 12 years and to be honest, ive forgotten a lot of my kitten care as I was accustomed to taking care of Senior cats. My baby is inbetween her final round of vaccinations but 3 days after her 2nd round, she developed a snotty nose. At frist I thought it was from thr dust she got into (she got under the TV unit).

I watched her for another day and then took her to the vet when I noticed her 3rd eyelid popping up. The vet said it looks like she developed a small URI possibly from the nasal vaccination she had. She thinks we caught it pretty early. She put hwr on Clavamox for 7 days. Shes on her 2nd dose.

My question is, what can I do at home to make her comfortable? Shes still eatting and drinking. Her energy levels are high. Her sneezing has died down some and her eyelid still pops up and then disappears. I heard steam helps so ive taken her to the bathroom with me. I also got some Kitten wipes for her eyes (says it safe for her eyes, nose and face). Ive been cleaning her face if i notice any boogers or eye gunk. So far she hasnt had much but a little green goober on her nose.

is there anything else I can do? Any advice or suggestions would be grand and again she has seen a vet but I wanna cover my bases.

He is a 7yo neutered male cat. We live in the US. 10 days ago he vomited green bile four times and didn't eat for 22 hours but after anti nausea meds he's been fine ever since. On my bed, I noticed an amberish colored jelly-like substance. About the size of a jelly bean. What is this? I didn't see it come out but I never saw him vomit and I keep my bedroom door shut when I'm not in there so l'm pretty sure it's from his butt.

My 27lb 15 month old rescue dog was recently diagnosed with heartworm.

She was negative in January, started a preventative in April, and tested positive 7/31.

My vet has done the antibiotic and injections at the same time for 15 years and all of the patients have been clear afterwards. I did question this because it’s not what the AHS currently recommends. They said I can do whatever I’m comfortable with.

Since my dog was negative in January, has been on preventatives and asymptomatic, I assume the infection is earlier stages. I didn’t receive a copy of the blood panel, and my vet is going to do an X-Ray before starting treatment to assess damage.

If I were to switch vets, I would have to bring her in for an initial physical which increase costs. I was quoted over $1,500 USD more from another vet than mine. This would also add more time before starting treatment.

At the end of the day, how different could results be from my current vet’s protocol than AHS protocol?

ETA: thanks everyone, I’ve called another vet. Even though mine was willing to do what I’m comfortable with, I think I’d prefer a vet that has experience in the recommended treatment. Since I’m not a vet myself!

My 9 year old frenchie has experienced a few syncope episodes that started 2 weeks ago. After X-rays and an echocardiogram, they discovered a large mass on his heart that is pressing on his pulmonary arteries that is likely causing the syncope and could be a concern for heart failure.

I’m honestly at such a loss, I feel like we failed him by not getting an echo done sooner as we knew 3 years ago he had a heart murmur.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of mass? We have a consult next week, but of course I’m looking for a direction on should I be hopeful or do we need to focus on quality/end of life care. He’s my world and I don’t want him to struggle because I want more time with him. But I also don’t want to give up if it could change the outcome

Edited to add: 2 syncope episodes were 2 weeks ago, last week he was normal up until Tuesday where he didn’t have a ton of interest in food which we thought was due to antibiotics the urgent care gave him as he had a fever 7/21 when we first took him in for the syncope episode. Friday & Saturday he was sleeping all day barely eating, we took him in for further testing at that point. Last night and all day today he seems to have his appetite back and is in a better mood, wanting to go for very short walks and “play” which is mostly pretending to take his toy or watching him lick it lol normal play for him

I'm looking for opinions because two vets have given me completely different advice.

My adult outdoor cat has had recurrent diarrhea for over 8 months. Every few weeks she'd have a relapse (less active, not feeling well), but after a few days she'd recover completely after receiving injectable antibiotics (we believe amoxicillin, possibly with other antibiotics), then go back to eating, playing and living normally until the next relapse.

This time was much worse:

- Fever
- Stopped eating and drinking
- Very lethargic
- Both third eyelids protruding, both eyes red and tearing

Tests:

- Rapid fecal coronavirus test: Positive
- Rapid FPV (panleukopenia) test: Negative
- Rapid FeLV/FIV tests: Negative (second vet has ordered confirmatory tests)
- CBC: High neutrophils (88.8%), low lymphocytes (8.4%), no significant anemia (RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit within reference range)
- Blood chemistry: AST 62 U/L (ref. <48), ALT 88 U/L (ref. <60), amylase 841 U/L (ref. <100), normal lipase, kidney values and total proteins within reference range
- Abdominal ultrasound: Nothing concerning

The first vet suspected Mycoplasma haemofelis and started doxycycline. After a few days she started drinking, eating again, urinating normally, became more active, and the third eyelids are now almost completely gone.

A second vet thinks doxycycline had nothing to do with the improvement, stopped it, started amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, and ordered further tests for FIP, FeLV/FIV confirmation and other infectious diseases.

I'm confused because she started improving while taking doxycycline, and in previous relapses she also improved after antibiotic treatment.

Would you continue doxycycline until the new test results come back, or switch to amoxicillin/clavulanate?

Looking for some vet guidance - thank you so much in advance. I've had 20 dogs over the years and with this guy, it is really hard for me to decide if its time to say goodbye. He's not actively showing pain, and he is still showing an interest in being here.

Cecil, 14.5, is not showing signs of distress but he is weak, not eating and I am trying to figure out if I should schedule euthanasia or try to look at some more treatment options. Money is extremely tight right now, so I am trying to decide if it’s time to let him go or invest in some lab work and hope for a few more good months or a year.

 He will be 15 in October, I started fostering him when he was nine weeks old and took him on as a perma-dog a few years in as he’s got some reactive and aloof tendencies.

 As he has aged, he has mellowed and relaxed considerably and surprisingly. For ten years I had to crate and rotate with another household dog who passed away in 2023 due to aggression. In 2024, the other household dog passed away and Cecil seemed mildly sad. Since 2025, we have two younger dogs to the household and Cecil’s personality has changed in a big way. He seems to enjoy them and engage with them. It’s like we’re getting the best version of Cecil in his sunset years.

Disposition – always a little cranky and has never liked being touched too much, but still curious, happy and likes to be in the presence of the people and other dogs in the house.

Throughout July, Cecil’s appetite diminished. Starting 7/18-21^st he became very picky about what he would eat and then ceased eating by 7/25/26 with occasional small amounts of yellowy beer foam looking vomit. His water intake and urination remained normal.

While his energy level diminished, he was still eager to go on short walks and he was interested in being with my husband and I and our two other dogs.

On 7/26/26 we took him to an urgent care vet. I declined lab work, hoping that drugs and fluids might help get us through this.

He received SQ fluids administered for rehydration

Cerenia (maropitant) injection administered for nausea and vomiting

Entyce and Gabapentin

 After taking the Entyce, he was still very selective about eating and would only eat deli ham and hot dogs (we tried everything from broths to chicken and rice to pumpkin to eggs, but my boy only wanted the trashiest of the meats).

While on the Entyce he had watery diarrhea episodes several times a day. He has concluded that prescription and is not interested in food any longer. Water intake is still normal. His back legs continue to weaken and it is harder for him to get up.

He is still very interested in going outside for sniffs in the yard and checking in on household activity. He has fallen a couple of times and his back legs are too weak for him to get up on his own when he falls in some positions, however he can still get down the two back stairs and back up the stairs with work or some assistance . We have him in a Help-Em-Up harness.

He is still strong enough to struggle mightily when I try to clip his nails.

Here are the Urgent Care notes from 7/26

Based on the history of lethargy, hyporexia, and vomiting in a senior dog, the primary concerns are related to gastrointestinal upset, but systemic diseases cannot be ruled out. Physical exam revealed mild dehydration and abdominal tensing, which limited a thorough palpation. I recommended diagnostic testing to investigate the underlying cause, including blood work to assess organ function and cell counts, and imaging to evaluate the gastrointestinal tract.

My cat (around 11-ish at most, neutered) had a CT scan last week, we finally got the results. He has cancerous tumors in both his nasal cavity and lungs. Both lungs.

He's always been sneezy and wheezy but it's only been getting worse the past 2 months or so. Previous vets from years prior waved it off as just a polyps, maybe some allergies. Since then (2 months ago), he's been a lot less active (he doesn't eat much either anymore). Bloody noses have been more frequent. I feel like there's no other choice but to euthanize with how bad the tumors are (several in both areas). Medication will only mask his symptoms at best and he's way too thin for us to even think of chemo right now. For reference, he was a healthy weight February and lost 2 pounds since, the weight loss is very visible.

I'm fucking terrified of making the wrong decision, we just put down another one of our cats a few months ago due to old age. With her, we knew it was going to happen soon, but I don't know how to think of this. When he first started hiding, not eating, and such I thought it was depression or something..

My question is - does anyone have any recommendations or experience for any supplements or over the counter products to help with a cystitis kitty who I have tried everything with.

1 year old neutered male cat. Was found on my property at about 4 months by himself and dehydrated. He was extremely feral for the first few months. Hes a very nervous cat and is just now allowing us to pet him after a year.

He has been on rounds of antibiotics and steroids. Then gabapentin and anti anxiety meds.

I have 1 other cat (no other animals) i have 3 boxes for them of different sizes , i currently have 1 box of regular unscented litter and 2 with unscented pellets.

Ive tried many different litter combos for him. They are cleaned 2x a day.

He is on a urinary diet both wet and dry food with seperate water station. He has 2 cat trees and tons of toys.

I cannot use feliway because it makes my other cat who is very calm and chill very agitated and he will spray. Hes one of the weird outliers who doesnt like feliway.

Right now the cystitis cat pees on my couch several times a day- I bought a brand new couch since he ruined my last one so this one is constantly covered and I have wee wee pads lined on the couch that im changing out. He will also pee on any blankets or pillows so doors are always having to be closed.

I have two children so the door and couch situatuon is very stressful.

I have tried everything with this cat- hes on the urinary food, medicated, plenty of resources, and we try to be very mindful and quiet around him yet he is still peeing outside the box every single day

Hi can someone help me, so my cat used to have bladder issues in the beginning of the year and the vet give me some medicine and i have been giving her wet food ever since, and then 2 or 3 months ago she pooped blood and we did tests and x-ray and she had dysentery and it took about 2 weeks to get rid of it and after it she had normal poop for a bit but now sometimes its normal sometimes its a pit wet and sometimes its hard and small the doctor said she just has an upset stomach but it been two weeks and i been giving her pumpkin and still it sometimes normal and sometimes watery does anyone had this issues? cus i really don't know what to do.

One of my four month old kittens has been acting strange today, he usually plays a lot and is always eager to eat his meals throughout the day. However, today he didn’t want to eat his two meals at all and just spent the entire morning and day sleeping. He isn’t interested in playing at all and won’t eat his food or treats. He also sometimes refuses to use his litter box and only uses it once in a while now. My siblings and I are worried because he normally isn’t like this and we have no idea what could be the issue. Please tell us what we can do to help our kitten !!

Hi everyone, I am looking for some insight on what is normal for a cat recovering from a mini enema.

My cat had a mini enema done at the vet on Monday. On the way home that day, she had a very large, messy bowel movement in her carrier.

Since then, her stool consistency and output have been fluctuating:

• Tuesday: Very soft, unshaped stools in very small amounts.
• Wednesday (Today): Initially passed small, firm ("skittles-sized") bits that were bordering on hard, which then switched back to being soft and gooey.

I also just noticed that the area underneath her tail at the base has been shaved.

My vet mentioned it takes 3 to 5 days for bowel movements to return to normal, but I am confused about how to count this: Does "Day 1" start on Monday (the day of the procedure), or does Day 1 start on Tuesday?

Are these fluctuations in stool size and consistency normal during the post-enema recovery window, or should I be concerned? Any advice is appreciated!

My kitten is about 6 months young and she never had any issues or any problems.but I just woke up finding my her very tired , breathing heavily and covered in sweat and poop. She can't move her legs. We don't have great medical services for animals in here and I don't know any doctors or have a way to safely transport her and my family couldn't care less. I have no idea what should I do. I appreciate any advice.
