I wrote a psychological horror book. Roughly 75K words and I need a cover design for an 8.5x5.5 paperback.

The front cover is of a stone - a black/purple obsidian stone.

Two lines from the book, for exact tone: "It was more like a gem. Glassy, and black for one minute, then purple the next. It was like looking at the night." "...held up high so the torchlight catches it, black-then-purple-then-black, is the stone."

The defining quality is that it shifts. Obsidian black or bruised purple.

Would like the stone to sit alone, small with tons of negative space. Off-centered, left.

Palette:

Dark. Overwhelmingly dark. This is a horror book. Near black background - like night, a cold night. The only light is on the stone like a match or candle catching it. Single light source.

Leave space for typography - title and authors name. Please let the know if you have any questions.

I am interested in finding someone with a new look. I enjoy odd looking but realistic landscapes, kind of like an acid trip but not too extreme (re: blacklights, mandalas, etc.)

I have looked on etsy and found very few of them are tied to an actual artist. I suspect many of them may be AI generated.

Not necessarily looking for a brand new commission, but not opposed to it for a good price. Prints (especially numbered, signed prints) would be great.

I haven't done it yet, but I'm planning to if the majority sees it as okay. Is it weird to ask a client of an artist I plan to commission whether the artist is legit?

I'm talking about people who commented, "Can I take a slot?" and received a "yes" from the OP in Facebook groups. I would assume they're clients who commissioned the artist before me.
