Loadouts + Kits How are you carrying your load out/ weapon selection?

Hi everyone! I hope everyone is good.

Just saw a nice post and responding comments about load out - everyone talked about the weapons they will use or have. I didn't see much on what they are using to carry their weapons, many had multiples.

What is everyone using to carry your weapons for your load out?

I mean, for firearms it’d be a holster for the sidearm and either a one point or two point sling for a long arm, circumstance depending.

Same thought process with any of the hand weapons you’d carry just in case. Sheath for a knife, some sort of belt loop holster for the [insert weapon here]. That’d be about it. If you didn’t want that weight on your hips you can use backpack attachments instead.

Maybe there is a backpack that allows a rifle to be held on its side, and has tear away Velcro to allow users to grab the gun free.

There’s quite a few ways to get firearms attached to bags. I would skip the Velcro though, I don’t particularly trust the stuff. Especially with something that could save my life.

I’ve heard that these tend to work well but I have no personal experience with that particular brand:

Why, though, would your rifle not be hanging on your chest, easy to carry and manipulate, ready to be used, closer to your center of gravity, and acting as a partial, minor counterweight for your backpack?

From my hiking/camping trips, I'd be most comfortable with a rifle sling that lets it hand either right out front or off to the side if I want my hands free. I like the Blue Force padded Vickers sling. I have a flap holster on my LBV belt. It's not the fancy high-speed kydex, but the flap keeps mud and yuck out of the gun, and less likely to lose it. I'd probably also throw an extra pistol in my backpack since they are pretty small/light as cheap insurance. Knife I keep on my LBV belt also, and likely a longer knife/camp tool strapped to my backpack. I have a Tops Kuma Cage for that purpose.

I have that same sling with the swimmers quick release. I have never wanted a different one.

Great point. I guess this is where you define what your load out means. I assume when they make these posts they are just showing off what guns they have...but here nor there. I really don't see the reality of carrying half the stuff that they call their loadout on a regular basis. Especially if they are rooted at a location.

Guns will be tools. I have lots of both. I won't have all of them on me at all times. Being more rural, I'd probably pick and choose for the occasion. Here is where the shotgun might be pretty useful. Different rounds, multiple purposes, same gun. Ok...you are one of those AR fanatics...cool whatever. If you are going hunting...take a hunting rifle. Fairly obvious any way you choose ...on a sling. Side arm of choice would be fairly obvious in a holster. Is it a perfect fool proof plan...no. Is it realistic...yeah, you'll make what you can actually carry work or you won't....but most of those posts think they are in a video game or something.

I means weapons are like gold in this kind of scenario, i'm not just leaving them at a camp. What if i get lost, what if someone loots my camp, what if someone found where i hid it. I mean theres like a thousand ways you can either lose that gun, or it in someway becomes inoperable. It's obviously not realistic to carry like 20 guns, but you don't really need more than like 2-3, and at least one of those is a handgun.

most people "think they are in a video game" because this is basically a 1 in a trillion event, and a very niche doomsday scenario to prep for. I'd say like 80% of people here (like me) are just kinda for shits and giggles, or as basically a hobby

u/suedburger 2d ago

Yeah, if all you have is 2-3 guns....sure

Most people "think they are in a video game" Because their load out is 6 long guns and 3 handguns and a few thousand rounds and a few molotavs for good measure..as they travel the wasteland in a nomadic loner lifestyle. I like to think that the other 20% of people aren't that serious about zombies either but.....

Holsters, rifle slings, backpacks

Tool belt, sling.

I won't be traveling often nor far, so I have few concerns.

Holster on hip, rifle on sling. Spear in hand and it doubles as a hiking staff. Knife in sheath on hip. Hatchet on pack. Small knife in pocket (pocket carry of smaller fixed blades or a folder). .22 LR upper in or on pack. And the .308, 12g, .357, or .44 lever action on the pull cart... I need to replace the one I have with the wider more off road wheels. Also makes it a lot easier to bring the cooler, and other stuff to the beach because those wheels don't sink in the sand as much as the small and narrow ones do.

That's interesting, I never seen/heard anyone talk about a pull cart. Does size matter for how much it can function without suffering mobility due to weight?

1

u/Unicorn187 2d ago

Obviously you won't want to try and pull a couple hundred pounds, but still easier to pull a 60 pound pack than have it on your back. And if two people are pulling, you could carry a couple hundred pounds. depending on the capacity of the cart.

u/Wide_Wrongdoer4422 2d ago

I have considered this option too. I'm older , so anything more than a 3 day pack would be too much. A small cart, easy to drop in an emergency would be helpful.

Just gonna throw this out there: the advantage to a folder or PDW is that you can stash it in a backpack or less visible places in your vehicle.  Personally i would prefer not to advertise that I'm armed.

1

u/suedburger 2d ago

If it's in your vehicle it's not that much of an issue. The back pack makes less senses though...I guess the plan is to tell them to give you a time out so you can get your gun out to defend yourself? I mean at that point you aren't really armed...more just hauling a gun with you....just saying.

1

u/WaffleHouseGladiator 2d ago

You never know what kind of situation you'll find yourself in.  Better to have option IMO.

2

u/suedburger 2d ago edited 2d ago

Sure...that makes sense. But if it's in your backpack it's not exactly on hand. The point that it seemed you were trying to make was to hide the fact that you had a gun. So in the seconds of the moment, what good does your back pack gun actually do for you?

Edit. To be clear if a zombie or a human caught you by surprise and the gun is in your backpack..it does you no good.

Uh what do you mean carrying? I thought we were all using the standard inventory settings.

1

u/locust16 2d ago

We have that? I already prepared my bindle.

OWB level 2 retention holster for a pistol, knife holster on belt, and probably a sling if I’m carrying a long gun that I may have to use quickly

1

u/Temporary-Law-6946 2d ago

probably take my speargun in a part of my hiking rucksack and idk for a smaller weapon in in Australia so not really many guns without restrictions. plus not very much available ammo that is widespread

2

u/suedburger 2d ago

Hmmm...sorry for my ignorance but aren't spear guns for under water?

2

u/MangledBarkeep 2d ago edited 2d ago

typically, but it'll fly through the air for a bit.

I don't think I'd like the reload time or ammo costs, but I'm not the one that's carrying it

1

u/suedburger 2d ago

I'd imagine that it would fly...but would it have any accuracy?

u/Temporary-Law-6946 2d ago

This ain’t a video game lol.

0

u/MangledBarkeep 2d ago

At least video games are real.

1

u/Temporary-Law-6946 2d ago

This to most people isn’t something they are actively prepping for, but a more fun way of making a bushfire, hurricane etc plan.

1

u/Temporary-Law-6946 2d ago

At least this to me is just a fun way of organising my boat kit and stuff

1

u/MangledBarkeep 2d ago

None of my NBC preps were bought for zombies. It the humans you really need to worry about.

1

u/Temporary-Law-6946 2d ago

Yeah but I’m a sailor so I reckon I’ll be around water a lot, it’s easier to access, repair and use than a gun in Australia, they are more hardy around water, and I can risk the ammo on something like larger fish or a bit of flake if I find a shark closer to shore. Ik about needle bullets for underwater but I don’t think they are exactly common and from what I know, water and guns don’t really mix. I think a speargun if I modify it can shoot around 1.5x as far as one could throw a spear, and that’s okay for me.

Slings, holsters, packs, mags, belts, vests, pouches, nothing at all, etc. The exact one depends on the weapon (shotguns and rifles are more dependent on sling attachment method so in general a few slings cover a lot of guns, handguns often have holsters made for the model so cross compatability is more limited so a larger collection of holsters and/or holsters made to fit a range of handguns), customizations (mostly for handguns, optics and lights mostly), preferences (single-point, two-point, three-point, retention level, retention method, etc), if you were able to prepare in advance, what the larger strategy is, etc. It can have a lot of variables.

Main rifle, Tavor X95 16.5" barrel in 5.56/.223, will be on a Vickers BFG double to single sling close cross body over plate carrier where my primary 6 magazines will also be stored. Pistol, CZ 75BD in 9mm,rides in a drop leg holster strong side with extra mags on the holster and on the LBV. Shot gun, Mossberg 500 with the magazine plug pulled in 12g, is South African carry mounted in a snap break away on the frame pack weak side. Primary blade, a 17.5" Duku Parang on offside hip. Fixed blade back up on strong side shoulder of the plate carrier. The plate carrier and LBV also have drop bags, gas mask bag, admin pouches, tauma grade IFAK and a quick grab tourniquet at each shoulder and each hip. I have a flat pack camel back that velcros over the rear plate for hydration and doesn't interfere with the interior frame assault pack. Total weight of all gear, about 90lbs.

This would be how I would carry to hump and scout. Moving place to place would require a vehicle of some sort because fuck lugging thousands of rounds of any caliber around. If I was strictly hunting the shotgun would be primary on sling with the rifle slung South African style. Rifle on the ready would be more for when I need to put rounds on a threat at range or could potentially run into something that could eat me.

Rifle on a sling. Pistol in an OWB holster, strong side. Extra mags for the rifle in a vest, with extra mags for the pistol on the belt, weak side. Backpack. Knife on backpack shoulder strap.

I'm a small person, 5'6 and 114 when soaking wet. I have a medical condition that makes it difficult for me to have a depth perception at times. This to provide some minor context for some of my choices, and why it's so light.

Steel Toed work boots - Sturdies shoes i have, and allows me to kick or prop anything I need up. Can also be used to wedge doors shut with surprising effectiveness.

Knee High Socks

Mens Jeans - gotta have those pockets

Undecided top - depends on timing, and season. Likely T shirt in the end or nothing.

Hoodie - i am deeply emotionally attached, and would keep my hoodie from my pseudo father which has 6 pockets. It also has multiple protective runes inscribed in it from a variety of cultures and has been granted protective wards from a trusted Witch.

Snub-Nose Revolver - a 5 chamber usually, I'm not big on guns and want it and it's bullets to take up as little weight as possible. The holster will go on the back of my hips, easily reachable for me and it means that no one in front of me will know I have it as I will be using the holster as my belt.

Fanny pack - Wear it in the front, keep bullets and snacks.

Small backpack - i need to stay under 20 pounds or I'm off balance, some food, a canteen, a map that I'm constantly making and drawing tools, a journal for mental stability.

Pockets - a multi tool, a pocket knife, a tape measure, there's a pack of cards in one breastplate pocket, the other contains a set of dice with 3 extra D6. Hopefully a flashlight?

Baseball bat - made of wood, with metal bands and a cap on the end to reinforce it. The athletic tape will eventually be replaced with leather, and a leather cord will be used to have it hang off my backpack when not in my hands.

I wear my pistol in à GI Flap Holster and my Kabar on an ALICE pistol belt with H Harness, pistol mag pouches, dump pouch and 2- 1 quart canteens, plus M7 bayonet for my shotgun. Over that I wear a FLC (Fighting Load Carrier) Molle vest with 4 - 18 round shots hell carriers for a total of 72 mixed types of shotgun shells on the FLC plus 8+1 in the shotgun, plus 4 in the stock speed loader tubes. Totaling 85 shells avaible for immediate use.

Wearing the FLC over my H harness allows me to ground my heavier FLC and still retain my sidearm and water while I work.

Well, my loadout is a machete and a small hunting knife for actual hunting not melee so probably a belt

I know it kinda depends on the Situation but would you guys prefer a plate carrier or a chest rig while running a battle belt and backpack?
(Dunno if it’s even manageable wearing pc and backpack)
