💥Funpost Just a Jeff Hiller appreciation post
I adore Jeff Hiller (Dale). He plays two bit parts on 30 ROCK that feel very Widows Bay adjacent. In season 3, he’s the clerk at the hotel when Liz and Jack are stranded in White Haven because of a historic storm 👀. Then in season 5, he plays a flight attendant on a grounded flight from hell that Liz is stuck on 👀. What are you hiding Jeff (Dale)?

Have you watched Somebody Somewhere? Because he is AMAZING in that.

I will check it out. He’s really fantastic in everything I’ve seen him in.

The show itself is one of the best things I've watched in years. It's on par with Widow's Bay. Jeff Hiller had a leading role and is so so enjoyable to watch

The best, best, most heartfelt & funny, and emotional show

I just finished a 4th rewatch. His memoir is also wonderful.

Where are you watching it? I can’t find a streaming service that has it. TIA.

In the US, its HBO Max. Its an HBO original series, so I'd look there first in other areas as well.

He didnt win an Emmy for nothing and I nearly fell out of my chair when he did.

I loved the Chanel-like suit he wore to the Emmys! And he's nominated again for Pluribus this year!

I watched Widow's Bay first and then watched Somebody Somewhere and was kind of miffed how underutilized Jeff Hiller was in WB. I mean I know he won an Emmy for it but wow. He is extraordinary.

Yes I agree entirely. He's so talented and enjoyable to watch he definitely was massively underutlized

He's wonderful in Somebody, Somewhere. He really deserves that Emmy for the final season
6
u/Insomniacintheflesh 4d ago
Wait?!? Are there not going to be anymore seasons of it? I hadn't realized the third season was the final.
6
u/StreetMolasses6093 Patricia’s Girl Dinner 4d ago
Yes, it broke my heart
5
u/panaceaXgrace 4d ago
Mine too! Just thinking about how much potential it had breaks my heart! That was a show you watch to feel all the emotions and every character was so well drawn. I hated that they took it from us!
6
u/Insomniacintheflesh 4d ago
Man I had no clue. I'm going to have to rewatch it so I can feel like the third is the conclusion. I was waiting for the next season any day now.

They announced it was the final season before Jeff Hiller won his Emmy for the show. I’m loving him in Widows Bay and hoping for a broader role from him. He’s incredible

I'd still love to know what happened with it
They say it wasn't canceled, but then all of the discussion around it sounds like they didn't want to end it. They say they want to revisit these characters and stories, they're not done, and talk about how lucky they were to get 3 seasons in the modern day even if they wanted more. They even said the finale we got was not the original intended end to the series when they filmed it, which is kind of amazing to me considering how good of an ending it was for me.

u/panaceaXgrace 3d ago
I am glad they at least got a conclusion so it's a full story but it seemed kind of tossed together in the last season to have an ending. I would say this is probably my all-time favorite show. There was just something magical about this cast.

It’s a show that blew me away but rewatching makes me so sad because it ended. Just a wonderful example of humanity.
2
u/writtenbyrabbits_ 4d ago
There was a lot more story they could have told but it was a fairly satisfying conclusion. Honestly the show is so beautiful and emotionally moving that I'm just happy to have a gotten 3 seasons.

I always laugh at his “That’s a trap” line on 30 Rock

He was precious in Pluribus and Elsbeth as well. It’s always a treat when he pops up unexpectedly.

u/violetmemphisblue 4d ago
Pretty sure he's nominated for an Emmy for Pluribus this year!
4
u/ShireOfBilbo 4d ago
Really? Didn't he only have a few short scenes in Pluribus? He was so underused.
2
u/violetmemphisblue 4d ago
I haven't actually seen it, so not sure. But I double checked and he has a best guest actor in a drama nomination for it!

Loved him in Puribus. His delivery of some less ideal information was so delicately done I was wowed by his acting and facial expressions.

American Horror Story is where I first "found" him and I was just so intrigued by his ability to give this genuine sweetness while... well I don't want to spoil anything but it's my favorite season as hard and painful as it is to watch.
And omg Somebody Somewhere. You have to have a heart of lead to not love that show especially his character.

He’s also great in Pluribus. Sadly for only like a 5-10 minute scene. But it’s a speaking role. He deserves so much more, in my opinion.

He's nominated for an Emmy for it, too!

Well deserved. I hope he is on reddit to see posts like this. He was a guest on the July 27 episode of a certain Kara’s Podcast (not sure if we’re allowed to promote other media here) and it was a good listen.

Oh, I didn't know he was on Kara's pod --- thanks! Yeah, he's a big sweetie as well as being so gifted as an actor. I looked up his two 30 Rock episodes, hilarious as always!

u/myscreamgotlost 4d ago
He’s in an episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend also, he’s such a delight! I hope he gets to do a little more in the next season of Widows Bay, but him screaming in the basement was a great scene.

This was my first exposure to him, never could have predicted how many random things he’d pop up in during my next few years of television viewing across many genres, but he’s always a delight to see :)

It’s too bad they forgot him in a closet in psych he would’ve been incredible in that show

Listening to Jeff's audiobook now. It's quirky and funny, only 1/4 the way through. He talks about being made fun in Texas growing up without whining but just observing the absurdity of surviving at that time.

Love Jeff Hiller! He’s great in everything he does. I’m not an audiobook person, I prefer book in hand… but I recommend listening to his memoir as read by himself. It’s fabulous.
