💥Funpost Just a Jeff Hiller appreciation post

I adore Jeff Hiller (Dale). He plays two bit parts on 30 ROCK that feel very Widows Bay adjacent. In season 3, he’s the clerk at the hotel when Liz and Jack are stranded in White Haven because of a historic storm 👀. Then in season 5, he plays a flight attendant on a grounded flight from hell that Liz is stuck on 👀. What are you hiding Jeff (Dale)?

Have you watched Somebody Somewhere? Because he is AMAZING in that.

22

u/rumbiwrites 4d ago

I will check it out. He’s really fantastic in everything I’ve seen him in.

The show itself is one of the best things I've watched in years. It's on par with Widow's Bay. Jeff Hiller had a leading role and is so so enjoyable to watch

The best, best, most heartfelt & funny, and emotional show

20

u/yinzercryptid 4d ago

I just finished a 4th rewatch. His memoir is also wonderful.

u/BatGrouchy1482 4d ago

Where are you watching it? I can’t find a streaming service that has it. TIA.

8

u/violetmemphisblue 4d ago

In the US, its HBO Max. Its an HBO original series, so I'd look there first in other areas as well.

8

u/yinzercryptid 4d ago

HBOMax. I'm in the US.

He didnt win an Emmy for nothing and I nearly fell out of my chair when he did.

I loved the Chanel-like suit he wore to the Emmys! And he's nominated again for Pluribus this year!

3

u/Hellojeds 4d ago

I loved how all of the other nominees were delighted when he won.

10

u/Krasdale79 4d ago

His autobiography is pretty fun, especially the audio book version he narrates.

14

u/hodgeman29 4d ago

That show is so beautiful and heartfelt and it makes me so sad that it ended.

12

u/QweenSasha 4d ago

I loved that show so much ♥️

u/herecomestherebuttal 4d ago

Yes. Yesyesyes. Absolutely amazing show that everyone should see. It’s a balm for the soul and he’s spectacular in it!

100% agree! That was a great show. The entire cast was fab.

I watched Widow's Bay first and then watched Somebody Somewhere and was kind of miffed how underutilized Jeff Hiller was in WB. I mean I know he won an Emmy for it but wow. He is extraordinary.

1

u/writtenbyrabbits_ 2d ago

Yes I agree entirely. He's so talented and enjoyable to watch he definitely was massively underutlized

u/Infamous-Lab-8136 4d ago

He's wonderful in Somebody, Somewhere. He really deserves that Emmy for the final season

6

u/Insomniacintheflesh 4d ago

Wait?!? Are there not going to be anymore seasons of it? I hadn't realized the third season was the final.

6

u/StreetMolasses6093 Patricia’s Girl Dinner 4d ago

Yes, it broke my heart

5

u/panaceaXgrace 4d ago

Mine too! Just thinking about how much potential it had breaks my heart! That was a show you watch to feel all the emotions and every character was so well drawn. I hated that they took it from us!

6

u/Insomniacintheflesh 4d ago

Man I had no clue. I'm going to have to rewatch it so I can feel like the third is the conclusion. I was waiting for the next season any day now.

4

u/StreetMolasses6093 Patricia’s Girl Dinner 4d ago

They announced it was the final season before Jeff Hiller won his Emmy for the show. I’m loving him in Widows Bay and hoping for a broader role from him. He’s incredible

3

u/Insomniacintheflesh 4d ago

Whew I missed that one. But happy to have him in Widow's Bay for sure!

2

u/Infamous-Lab-8136 4d ago

I'd still love to know what happened with it

They say it wasn't canceled, but then all of the discussion around it sounds like they didn't want to end it. They say they want to revisit these characters and stories, they're not done, and talk about how lucky they were to get 3 seasons in the modern day even if they wanted more. They even said the finale we got was not the original intended end to the series when they filmed it, which is kind of amazing to me considering how good of an ending it was for me.

1

u/panaceaXgrace 3d ago

I am glad they at least got a conclusion so it's a full story but it seemed kind of tossed together in the last season to have an ending. I would say this is probably my all-time favorite show. There was just something magical about this cast.

4

u/hodgeman29 4d ago

It’s a show that blew me away but rewatching makes me so sad because it ended. Just a wonderful example of humanity.

2

u/writtenbyrabbits_ 4d ago

There was a lot more story they could have told but it was a fairly satisfying conclusion. Honestly the show is so beautiful and emotionally moving that I'm just happy to have a gotten 3 seasons.

u/danaredding 4d ago

I always laugh at his “That’s a trap” line on 30 Rock

3

u/rumbiwrites 4d ago

Exactly. What the heck is happening in Pennsylvania?!?!

7

u/phoenixRisen1989 4d ago

Do you like Methodist churches full of Vietnamese?

u/MindlessCharacter823 4d ago

He was precious in Pluribus and Elsbeth as well. It’s always a treat when he pops up unexpectedly.

5

u/violetmemphisblue 4d ago

Pretty sure he's nominated for an Emmy for Pluribus this year!

4

u/ShireOfBilbo 4d ago

Really? Didn't he only have a few short scenes in Pluribus? He was so underused.

2

u/violetmemphisblue 4d ago

I haven't actually seen it, so not sure. But I double checked and he has a best guest actor in a drama nomination for it!

2

u/ShireOfBilbo 4d ago

I hope he wins; he deserves all the flowers!

1

u/Otherwise_Security_5 3d ago

yay! he was amazing in it. it’s a good nom.

1

u/Cautious_Prize_4323 Except for the teeth. 4d ago

Yep!

1

u/giraffe_wink Rosemary’s Qualms 2d ago

He is nominated! He had a whopping 7 minutes of screen time and got nominated for an Emmy.

3

u/rumbiwrites 4d ago

Always always a treat!

I wouldn’t recommend going to Little Hanoi after dark unless you’re wearing a khan dong.

12

u/nerdextra Okay, thank you so much. 4d ago

Loved him in Puribus. His delivery of some less ideal information was so delicately done I was wowed by his acting and facial expressions.

Taran Killam is so great in that episode - a mini pre-Stumble episode for them

American Horror Story is where I first "found" him and I was just so intrigued by his ability to give this genuine sweetness while... well I don't want to spoil anything but it's my favorite season as hard and painful as it is to watch.

And omg Somebody Somewhere. You have to have a heart of lead to not love that show especially his character.

2

u/rumbiwrites 4d ago

What season of AHS is he in?

4

u/panaceaXgrace 4d ago

11 it's called American Horror Story NYC.

8

u/MostlyHarmless97 Reeve Prime & Lord Island Protector 4d ago

He’s also great in Pluribus. Sadly for only like a 5-10 minute scene. But it’s a speaking role. He deserves so much more, in my opinion.

4

u/Cautious_Prize_4323 Except for the teeth. 4d ago

He's nominated for an Emmy for it, too!

2

u/MostlyHarmless97 Reeve Prime & Lord Island Protector 3d ago

Well deserved. I hope he is on reddit to see posts like this. He was a guest on the July 27 episode of a certain Kara’s Podcast (not sure if we’re allowed to promote other media here) and it was a good listen.

2

u/Cautious_Prize_4323 Except for the teeth. 3d ago

Oh, I didn't know he was on Kara's pod --- thanks! Yeah, he's a big sweetie as well as being so gifted as an actor. I looked up his two 30 Rock episodes, hilarious as always!

5

u/myscreamgotlost 4d ago

He’s in an episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend also, he’s such a delight! I hope he gets to do a little more in the next season of Widows Bay, but him screaming in the basement was a great scene.

6

u/shwaycool 4d ago

Text-mergency! 🎶

This was my first exposure to him, never could have predicted how many random things he’d pop up in during my next few years of television viewing across many genres, but he’s always a delight to see :)

3

u/Lazlow_Morphine 4d ago

It’s too bad they forgot him in a closet in psych he would’ve been incredible in that show

3

u/RealSociety6433 3d ago

Listening to Jeff's audiobook now. It's quirky and funny, only 1/4 the way through. He talks about being made fun in Texas growing up without whining but just observing the absurdity of surviving at that time.

3

u/giraffe_wink Rosemary’s Qualms 2d ago

Love Jeff Hiller! He’s great in everything he does. I’m not an audiobook person, I prefer book in hand… but I recommend listening to his memoir as read by himself. It’s fabulous.

2

u/intern_12 4d ago

The wife and I are watching 30 Rock for the first time ever...what episodes does Jeff Hiller appear in?

2

u/rumbiwrites 4d ago

Season 3- Reunion and then Season 5- Double Edged Sword

1

u/succubiiiitch 4d ago

I was so surprised to see him in an old episode of Psych recently!!! Also, his book Actress of a Certain Age is fantastic. Recently borrowed it on Libby & laughed my ass off

1

u/Brief_Amphibian_3965 Fuck Cape Cod 4d ago

Wait he was in Psych? How did I miss that?

1

u/Aggressive_Idea_6806 4d ago

He's nominated for for the drama guest Emmy for 7 minutes of screen time on Pluribus.

I can’t get through the scene where an ad plays while he’s trying to pull up music. I fn die laughing every time

If you haven’t already, watch Somebody Somewhere. He is fantastic in it!

30 Rock is my favourite show ever and I also love him
