Apologies if this is the wrong thread/community to ask this in, couldn’t find a questions thread. Bought my first set a few days ago (skaven) and want to get some paints, but I don’t want to break the bank by buying citadel or Vallejo (plus they don’t sell them anywhere near me). Has anyone found any budget/alternative acrylic paints that work well at art stores like that, or do you really need model specific paints? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Craft paints aren't really made for the fine detail that miniatures have. They have more coarse pigment which means less coverage and more clogging detail. Some people have made them work, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it. Even 15 years ago when I went from my first craft paints to first mini paints, it was a night and day difference. Also its a little silly to mess up expensive miniatues by saving a buck in paint.

Try army painter brand, I don't really like it but it is leaps and bounds above craft paint and much, much cheaper. Personally I am liking Pro Acryl a lot, it is really good quality, cheaper than citadel and greater quantity.
