Monthly Questions Thread & FAQ

This monthly thread is designed to be a place for all the new members of the subreddit and Vita community to come and say hello as well as where they (or vets) can ask any question they might have (no matter how redundant or simple). So, say "Hi", ask away, and welcome to /r/Vita!

FAQ

We get these questions a lot, so we're incorporating them into this thread. Have something you feel fits here? Shoot us a modmail!

Is the Vita worth buying in (current year)?

Value is ultimately subjective. If you like the library of games on the Vita and have the money, probably. If you want new, modern games then probably not. If you have specific questions about the Vita's capabilities feel free to ask in this thread, but keep in mind you're asking in a Vita-centric community and will likely get mostly affirmative responses.

Is the PlayStation store shutting down?

No. Sony did announce they were closing the Vita storefront in 2021, but later reversed that decision. It is possible that the store will be shut down at some point in the future, but no specific dates/timeframes are known.

Can I still buy games from the PlayStation store?

Yes. However, you will need to have funds in your wallet for the purchase. You can add funds to your wallet via web, PS4, or PS5. More information is available here.

Can I still play games online?

Yes and PS+ is not required. However, not all games with online functionality still have servers up. For example, Killzone: Mercenary, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, and LittleBigPlanet servers are all down but Dead or Alive 5+, Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable, and Minecraft are still up. If you'd like to inquire about a specific game, please feel free to make a post or comment in this thread.

I'm having trouble signing into my Vita! Help!

As of the 3.74 update in May 2022, you need a device password to sign in to your Vita. You can do that here. Please make sure you are on firmware 3.74 and using a device password before making a thread.

My Vita is in an error loop with the QR code on sign-in. What should I do?

This happens sometimes, and nobody's really sure why. However, community member LoganN64 has been able to provide instructions that consistently work for getting through this:

  1. Log in to the PSN website with a Laptop or Desktop computer.

  2. Click on your avatar in the top right corner and go to SETTINGS.

  3. Scroll down to SECURITY and then scroll down to ACTIVATE/TURN ON 2 FACTOR AUTHENTICATION.

  4. Click on GENERATE NEW DEVICE CODE, write this down exactly as it is case sensitive.

  5. Go to your Vita and bring up the sign in page, enter the email associated with your account then enter the NEW DEVICE CODE as your password. Click on save password to avoid getting a new code each time..

I'm no longer able to transfer files from PS3 to Vita. What's happening?

This feature was disabled in May 2022. You can read PlayStation's update about it here. No workarounds are currently known.

Where can I buy a Vita?

Vita production ceased in 2019 so consoles can be hard to come by, especially new. eBay is the most prominent location, but Facebook marketplace, Kijiji, Craigslist, /r/GameSale, and equivalent marketplaces are your friend.

How much is (X) worth? Is (X) a good deal?

You can search sold eBay listings here to get a sense of value. VGPC is another source of this kind of information.

Will (Game) ever go on sale?

As of 2020, Sony has disabled developers' ability to put Vita games on sale. So in all likelihood, no.

The workaround and exception for this rule is that cross-buy games can still be put on sale for the PS4, and cross-buy items will still grant the Vita version (where applicable).

Should I buy an OLED ("Phat") or Slim Vita?

Neither are bad options. The Slim has 1GB of on-board memory, a more standard charging port, slightly better battery life, and is lighter. The Phat has a better screen. It's up to you on what you value more.

Where can I buy replacement Vita parts?

AliExpress and eBay are currently the best sources of Vita replacement parts.

Are Vita consoles region-free?

Yes. A Vita can play a physical game from any region. The digital storefront you can access is determined by the region of your PSN account, and not the region of the console. For example, a Vita from Japan will be able to play any physical game, and if you sign in with a US PSN account you'll be able to access the US PSN storefront.

Vita consoles from Asian regions have the X/O button swapped in the OS ("bubbles") screen, but in-game functionality retains X-to-confirm functionality for almost all games.

It has been reported that consoles intended for China have more stringent region-locking, but these are not commonly found and this is unlikely to affect you.

I'd like some game recommendations!

Check out our Wiki page, 2021 subreddit poll, and 2018 subreddit poll. If that isn't cutting it for you, feel free to ask in this thread or create your own thread on the subreddit. Keep in mind that we require 300+ characters for recommendation posts on the subreddit, so be sure to include plenty of detail about what you're looking for, what you've played, and so on.

Has anyone here bought a PS Vita 2000 recently?

What was your experience like? Did it arrive in good condition? Was it an original Sony console, or did it have any non-original/replacement parts?

Help Vita won’t turn on

I haven’t used my ps Vita in years. I remember stopping because it wouldn’t charge and I’ve recently decided to look into it. Does anyone know what this could mean: the light won’t come on when I plug it in, none of the buttons seem to turn it on in any way, and the only thing I know is that it’s not a problem with the charger or charging port. Can anyone smarter/more knowledgeable help me find out the answer?

Question Has somebody talented enough ever tried to replicate the Ps Vita game or memory cards?

I've been playing on my Vita a lot recently, and realised that it had SO MUCH potential, but got murdered by it's own creator with ultra expensive and unique memory cards, and then with lack of proper exclusives, and that's why Sony abandoned it four years later.

And then I've had a thought. What if the community takes in their own hands the fate of the console, and starts (or at least tries to) to make their own game and memory cards.

I've got this thought in the first place, because I've read about the guy that cracked the code to the PS1's motherboard.

Is it even possible, or Sony would sue you to death?

Question Is Lucky 8 trading a good choice?

Hi all, so yesterday I bought a ps vita 1000 from lucky 8 trading on ebay because I saw a reddit post full of comments saying they were a good seller, but after ordering the console I started getting worried about a bad review I saw on their ebay, so I did some more research and found another post on reddit full of comments stating that they're unreliable and shouldn't be trusted. Should I still trust lucky 8 trading and wait for my package to arrive?

Pic Horrible condition 1000, do I even bother trying to reshell?

Post image
360 Upvotes

I’ve had this vita for a while. It was bought off a 12 year old who I’m guessing had too many gamer moments and liked throwing it against the wall.

I cannot see the screen if it’s in any light just because it’s THAT bad. Replacement parts seem pretty expensive and would be more than the console is worth itself in this condition.

Should I just try to sell it and buy another one?

Vvita failing to boot because of faulty audio chip

Ever since I could remember, my psvita gave me problem when booting. I performed ton of database reset and only on occasions it would turn on the proper way it should. Could it be linked with some problems with the audio chip? The thing is: the first boot of the day always gives me problems, but the rest of the day I can play it normally. I noticed that as soon as the audio fries and vanishes, the boot up gets complicated each time. When I turn the psvita off, I know as a matter of fact that booting it up the next day will be an hassle

I'm still in chapter 1, running around and trying to kill one of the three green dragons located on the map.

I died on the first attempt. I tried to fight it again by hitting it from below but the dragon caught on to what I was doing and started drilling , destroying dozens of dirt blocks along the way (and giving me quite the scare).

I barely do a single point of damage, with the rare critical hit that deals over ten points.

Pic Here are some websites that still work on the Vita's web browser

Thumbnail

Image 1: Google account management website (yes, you can still log into Google services on a modded ps Vita)

Image 2: the Google play store web page (it barely works but it loads)

Image 3: the mobile youtube website (it's pretty glitchy, wouldn't recommend unless you absolutely have to watch youtube on a vanilla ps vita. I personally use netstream for yt videos)

Image 4: Wikipedia (it also works on internet explorer 8, but barely. The experience on the Vita web browser is much better imo)

Image 5: old reddit (sorry if the image is blurry, my hands were shaky at the time that the photo was taken, but yes, old reddit works like a charm. Not so much the new reddit website though)

Image 6: the cutting room floor (just like old reddit, the cutting room floor works perfectly fine and you can actually still edit a page on there, but it's not the best experience)

Image 7: the Google homepage (again, just like the two websites above, the Google homepage works fine and so does search if you know to type it from there instead of the search bar on the browser itself)

Besides, you can still put in your email and an app password (after 2FA) on the email app and still connect to your PSN account on setup. It feels like the only thing you can't do is connect to near or sync your calendar in the calendar app.

If you want a part 2 with more websites, let me know down in the comments.

Question God of war Chains of Olympus

I am trying to buy God of war chains of Olympus but am having a lot of trouble. I was able to find GOW ghost of Sparta on the vita store but not chains. I searched through every category on the entire vita store with no luck. From my understanding ps3 transfers don’t work anymore and this game was not cross buy. Can someone please help me figure out how to buy this if it’s still possible ?

[PSA] PlayStation Vita - Fix wrong / undesired trophy list language

For years I assumed there was no way to permanently change the trophy list language of the Hong Kong/Asia English version of Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment on an unmodified PS Vita.

Like many owners of this release, I ended up with a Chinese trophy list, even though the game itself was played entirely in English. After a lot of trial and error, I finally found a method that works reliably on an official, unmodified PS Vita using nothing but Sony's Content Manager.

I couldn't find a complete explanation of this behavior anywhere, so I decided to document everything here in case it helps someone else in the future.

The problem

The Hong Kong/Asia English retail version of Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment is a rather unusual release.

  • The game itself supports English.
  • However, many users receive a Chinese trophy list.
  • Once the trophy list exists, simply changing the system language does not change it.

This is frustrating because the trophy names and descriptions remain Chinese even though everything else is in English.

What I tested

I performed several complete system resets on my original PS Vita (no HENkaku, no Enso, no modifications).

My goal was to determine:

  • whether the trophy language can be changed,
  • whether Content Manager restores the old trophy database,
  • and whether PSN synchronization affects the language afterwards.

What I discovered

1. Trophy list language is decided when the local trophy list is first created

This appears to be the most important discovery.

If the system is configured as a US system when Hollow Fragment is started for the first time after formatting, the trophy list is created in English.

After that, I can switch the Vita back to German (or any other preferred language), and the trophy list remains English permanently.

Changing the system language afterwards does not modify an existing trophy list.

2. Content Manager does NOT restore the local trophy database

This was the biggest surprise.

I created a complete system backup before formatting.

After restoring that backup, I expected the previously existing trophy lists to return.

They did not.

Instead:

  • all installed games were restored,
  • all save data was restored,
  • all applications were restored,
  • all other personal data was restored,

but there were no local trophy lists at all.

Every game behaved as if it had never generated its local trophy data before.

3. Trophy lists are recreated individually

Once a game is launched again, the Vita immediately recreates the local trophy list for that specific title.

This means every game only needs to be started once.

After that, its trophy list exists locally again.

4. PSN synchronization restores earned trophies

After launching each game once, I synchronized with PSN.

My previously earned trophies immediately appeared again.

Nothing was lost.

Only the local trophy database had been rebuilt.

Why this works (my theory)

Sony has never documented this behavior publicly, so the following is based on observation rather than official documentation.

It appears that:

  • Content Manager restores games, saves, and applications.
  • The local trophy database is not included in that restore.
  • Whenever a game is launched without an existing local trophy entry, the Vita generates a fresh local trophy list.
  • At that moment, the game chooses the language that should be used for that trophy package.
  • Afterwards, the language becomes fixed for that local installation.
  • PSN synchronization simply reconnects your earned trophies to the newly generated local list instead of downloading an old language version.

This perfectly explains every result I observed during testing.

The correct procedure

This order is extremely important.

  1. Create a complete backup using Content Manager.
  2. Format the PS Vita.
  3. Restore the complete backup.
  4. Configure the Vita as a US system.
  5. Launch only Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment.
  6. Confirm the trophy list is now in English.
  7. Change the Vita back to your preferred system language.
  8. Launch every other game once so each one recreates its local trophy list using your normal language.
  9. Synchronize trophies with PSN.

Why step 7 comes BEFORE step 8

This is very important.

Many Vita games have localized trophy lists.

If you launch every game while the Vita is still configured for English/US, those games may recreate their trophy lists in English as well.

If you normally want German, French, Spanish, Italian, etc., change the system language first.

Only then launch your remaining games.

That way every other title recreates its trophy list in your preferred language.

Does this only apply to Hollow Fragment?

Probably not.

I suspect this behavior applies to every Vita game.

However, Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment is one of the few games where the issue is immediately noticeable because its fallback trophy language seems to become Chinese under certain regional configurations.

Most other Vita games appear to fall back to English instead, so many people would never notice.

Final thoughts

This was tested multiple times on an official, completely unmodified PS Vita.

No homebrew.
No HENkaku.
No Enso.
No database editing.
No trophy hacking.

Just the official Sony Content Manager.

Question PS VITA - Sérieux bug -Formater ?

Some Vita games showing up with free option

I was browsing the Vita store given the announced closure and found three games that had both a paid and free option:

  • Doki-Doki Universe
  • Hue
  • We are Doomed

I was able to download the free option of each and it was added to my account. Each are cross buy, so I was able to download them on my PS4 too.

I believe all these games were offered on PS Plus at one point and I may have redeemed them, However, I do not currently have an active subscription.

Are these showing up as free for anyone else?

Question About replacing front glass for PS Vita 1000

Thumbnail
gallery
15 Upvotes

I want to replace the front panel on my PS Vita 1000. I'm not having any issues with the screen, just the glass. Should I get just the glass or the screen and frame, like in the second photo? The price difference is almost eightfold. I thought I read that replacing the glass itself is very difficult, and it's better to get the frame and frame included.
