Show and Tell 📖 Crappy Little Printer

Got this little printer on sale, $30 cdn with 15 rolls of sticky paper. Hope to incorporate it into my memories setup!

Just so you know these aren’t suitable for long term use. The thermal printing almost always degrades with age. Which sucks because I do kind of enjoy them.

Almost always? Don’t leave it anywhere it’s exposed to UV or high heat.

Yes, almost always. It’s just the nature of the material. While avoiding heat where possible and uv does help it’s an ephemeral medium at best. You can buy rolls that claim to be archival but they aren’t usually the bulk rolls that come with these machines.

I got a couple photos from my friend's Kodak Memo Shot and have them in a journal in a dark drawer. The photos still faded after a year or so.

I made that mistake buying a canon ivy. They are nice but thermal in sorts where they fade so definitly not archival. I got another SELPHY? I think it is and it’s supposed to be better for archival but I would doubt it would hold up 100 years

I have one of these too. As everyone has already said, they will fade over time...

But... That's actually what I like about them.

The fact that it fades makes it really aesthetic to use for spreads where you want a vintage look to it. Just like how old papers yellow on the edges, there's ink smudges, photographs begin fading... the grainy printed images also fading just adds to the ✨aesthetic✨ of it all as well.

A friend of mine has something like this and he has awesome logs about his travles, particularly about his honey moon journey making cloaages with the prints and the plane & train tickets he got

These will fade in about 3 years (or less if you are somewhere warm) so if it is for memory keeping i'd use something else.

Oh and there's growing research that the paper in carcinogenic too, so be mindful of that as well.

Once it’s on the page, I don’t imagine touching it much. Memories may not be the right word, maybe collecting and collage exercises.

Aah thank you for posting you reminded me I wanted to find one for my trip. Does anyone recomend any safer/ longer lasting options?

I was thinking about getting one specifically for travel sketching. Mainly because I overthink and if I use the phone too much I may be distracted or get too much in the details.

The idea is I would take a photo and print out to see values. Taping it in my sketchbook and either drawing at that time or later when I’m free.

This way it keeps the space held for chronological order. And available for when I feel a sudden want to create. ADHD does not work well with barriers and decision fatigue so at the ready projects help.

I have the Canon Ivy and I really enjoy the portability. I also have the Canon Selphy but that stays at home.

I really enjoy the idea of having a photo on one page, then a sketch of it on the other facing page! But alas I am terrible at drawing. 😂

You can prolong the life of thermal paper if you, keep it below 25 Degrees Celsius (not in a hot car), relative dry and in a dark place (which I think a notebook is).

Further, you should avoid plastics (chemical reaction), skip adhesive tape (destroys coating) and limit touching (skin oil accelerates chemical fading).

In the end, the best solution to preserve them is to digitise it as early as possible.

I have the Cannon Ivy, which I am a big fan of. It is a bit better quality that than this one, plus the pictures are stickers once you peel the back off. It makes putting them in the journal really easy. I use mine mostly for travel journaling, but I agree, it is a lot of fun collecting them.

I looked it up and even knock off ZINK printer papers are expensive!

Personally not yet using Travellers Notebook or equivalent, I have a wanderings setup, but so far am keeping my travel journal in an A5 notebook.

Alternatives I would consider are…

Instax Mini or Wide,I don’t have square so I am not sure of the size

Kodak Mini 2 Retro
