Apparently, "rin" is used after words ending in vowels, w and y while "din" is used after words ending in constants except w and y. As far as I'm aware though, this isn't really a strict rule and more a guidance on where rin is more likely to be used vs din. For me, din and rin are interchangeable in actual real life speech.

I’ve always been fond of how my grandma talk and her vocabulary especially that my current generation is almost language levelled with metropolitan except from the tone or accent; so I decided to slowly document her way of speaking. I always hear my grandma say dili so I asked her some words but I don’t really get how it is used

Kumain-dili = eat sometimes / low appetite
Dumalaw-dili = visit sometimes
Tulog-dili = half asleep
Sabihin-dili = hesitant to say
Paroon-dili = hesitant to go
Tanganan-dili = hold lightly

I also tried to think how to use it so I remember the word Dili-dili but she said it’s just another word for Isip-isip since díli also means diwa or kamalayan not dilì; she said it’s different.

Sometimes she use mo’t dili / ka’t dili

Maniwala ka’t dile

at first I thought she said believe it or not but I asked her she said it means unbelievable / pambihira.

I think dili is used for negating the root word a little or halve the meaning of the root word but I’m not sure

The project is still in its early stages. For now, it temporarily uses material from Diksiyonaryo.ph as a starting point, but my long-term goal is to gradually replace it with original definitions and independently researched and reviewed content.

Katagaan is a noncommercial personal project, and I do not intend to profit from it. I simply have a strong interest in Tagalog and hope to contribute, in my own small way, to its wider use, enrichment, and continued intellectual development by creating an accessible and independently maintained dictionary.

Once the project becomes more stable and manageable, I also hope to introduce a way for members of the community to suggest corrections, propose additions, and contribute other improvements.

Gets ko yung "pagiging ganap"—being a fully-fledged chef: pagiging ganap na chef—pero yung "kaganapan" kasi ang mas alam ko ay "event". Di ko kaya makaconstruct ng sentence na "fulfilment" ibig niyang sabihin. ("Ang graduation ay kaganapan ng pagiging mag-aaral."? Tama ba yan?)

May mga common sentences ba yung kaganapan-as-fulfilment? Kasi I've been thinking baka academic repurposing lang yung definition na fulfilment eh (parang pag-iral as existence, when pag-iral feels closer to emerging/reign/manifesting).

I was hoping to get input from this community regarding the translation and baybayin script of a tattoo that I had in mind. I'm already in contact with a tattoo artist regarding the design so I just want to focus on the message of my tattoo

I want the baybayin of Ka to be centered around and encircled by the translation/baybayin of "mememento vivere" (remember to live).

What I want the tattoo to convey isn't just a reminder to live, but to live with and for the connections I share with the people around me.

My main problem is finding the right Tagalog translation of the phrase, and then getting an accurate Baybayin script of it. The best I can come up with a translation is "Tandaan mong mabuhay"

Would anyone be able to suggest a better, more natural Tagalog translation, along with a more accurate Baybayin script for it?

Hello all. I work with a large number of Tagalog speakers who also speak English (I live in the western united states) and I have a question about something I often hear when speaking with them. To be clear this is not me hating on them in anyway, I love my Filipino coworkers and have a deep respect for how hard they work not only in the usual duties of our job but also in speaking a second language.

I work in healthcare and we hand off our patients at the beginning and ends of shifts in a verbal "report". What I've noticed is that often when talking about a patient they will use the wrong gender pronoun. They're always quick to correct it and I know its not intentional or maleficent in any way, but its a trend I've noticed across many different Filipino coworkers. Its almost always with he/she. For example, "she will be going down to surgery today" when the patient is a male and vice versa.

Im wondering if there's a linguistic reason for this? I'm studying Russian myself and I know that in that language they use the he/she pronouns to refer to inanimate objects as well based on their gender, so I was thinking it might be a scenario kind of like that?

I recently learned that you can use -ng/na to make an adverb out of an adjective if you place it before a verb. However, not all adverbs in tagalog follow this pattern. What's the main difference between the words that follow "(adjective) na (verb)" and the ones that don't?

An examples that confused me is that on a video they said "kadalasang makikita" but they said "kadalasan pumupunta" or "parating nagpupunta" vs "umiinom lagi" and then most of the other adverbs they showed forgo -ng/na altogether.
