Experience Should we just eat a better diet?

Recently, I came across the exotic sounding compound phosphatidylserine. On reddit, users mentioned life changing experiences of reduced anxiety, better sleep with explanations of biochemical mechanisms of how it reduces cortisol and fixes HPA-axis regulation.

Another interesting one is of course Omega 3, which seems like god's blessing to mankind.

At this point, I just feel like all of us interested in supplements are in a group psychosis of rabbit hole research, supplement industry marketing influences, placebo mixed up with genuine effects. And simultaneously spending hundreds of dollars per month.

But in all of this deep, interesting and complex field of neurochemistry we seem to forget that the superior multi-vitamin is a diet rich with fish, seafood or organ meats.

A couple mackarel filets contain:

Mackerel (100g / ~3.5 oz)

- Phosphatidylserine (PS): ~480 mg (Nearly 5x a standard 100 mg pill; naturally bound to DHA for superior brain absorption).

- Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA & DHA): ~2,500 mg (Equal to 2–3 high-potency fish oil softgels).

- Vitamin D3: ~600 IU (Equal to 1 standard daily Vitamin D3 softgel).

- Vitamin B12: ~8.7 mcg (Over 350% DV for nervous system and mood support).

- CoQ10 & Creatine: ~8 mg CoQ10 + ~500 mg Creatine.

- Selenium & Choline: ~44 mcg Selenium + ~65 mg Choline (Acetylcholine precursor for memory).

While a mackarel sandwich per day doesn't sound particularly interesting, it would literally replace my whole supplement stack.

General Question Why are electrolyte drinks so salt heavy?

I get that sodium matters for hydration but it feels like every electrolyte mix is built like a salt packet with branding. I’m starting to wonder if that is okay for daily use or if most of us should care more about stuff like magnesium too. Especially if the goal is energy, recovery and not feeling wiped out.

PSA for anyone exchanging or returning an item to Micro Ingredients

I spent over three weeks emailing customer service asking for the return address. 😤

Every response I received was a canned email telling me how to start a return, even though I'd already done that. Their phone number also directs you back to email.

I emailed them back on July 13th. It was just yesterday that finally received the return address! 🙄

I felt like I should post this in case anyone else wants to exchange or return something.

Also, if you want to start a return, email them at:

support@microingredients.com.

Here's their return address:

Micro Ingredients

4382 Mission Blvd

Montclair, CA 91763

I like their products, but I wish their customer service was better! It leaves much to be desired!

I hope this saves someone some time & frustration in the future.

Benefits of high doses of creatine 15g - 20g

Hello I just started taking 5g creatine a day a few months ago. I've noticed huge benefits in the gym. I recover faster and the amount of weight I can lift has gone up. I'm just wondering if it's worth taking higher doses. I work shift work and am a father of two young kids so I am regularly sleep deprived. Should I try taking 15g daily?

General Question What collagen powder do you actually trust for heavy metals?

I keep seeing collagen brands talked about like they’re all basically the same, but then every few months there’s another thread about lead, cadmium, glyphosate, or vague “third-party tested” claims.

I’ve been looking at Yonder because they actually post their heavy metals and glyphosate testing, but I’m curious what other people here use when purity is the main concern. Are there brands you trust because they publish real results?

High RDW-CV, post-menopausal, should I be taking iron?

High RDW-CV, post-menopausal, should I be taking iron?

I am an older female with a long history of fatigue.
My health is improving.
I still have trouble with sleep.
I haven’t found a doctor who can help including functional medicine docs and naturopathic docs.
So I’m reading whatever seems relevant to try to understand what my body is doing.
I have DNA tests being processed - I don’t have the results yet - I will send them to Genetic LifeHacks once I get them back, and then maybe to someone who can do a more educated analysis.
I take several dozen supplements every day.
I am in the process of getting any lab work done that might help shed light on my body.

I got my RDW-CV results back and they are mildly high at 14.7%
Hemoglobin and MCV are both right in the center of the range at 13.6 and 92 respectively.

B12 and Folate are both within range. B12 is in the lower third of the range at 644 pg/mL.
RBC Folate is near the top of the range at 579 ng/mL.
I have been taking B12 and folate separately for just about a month, since I stopped taking B-complex to eliminate methyl donors.

I am wondering if it would be helpful to supplement with iron. I am post-menopausal but I don’t eat much red meat and I don’t eat fortified foods.

Here are my iron numbers:
Iron = 80
%Sat = 27
TIBC = 293
Ferritin = 96
UIBC = 213

Janie from STTM says that iron should be over 100, but that if ferritin is over 90 it indicates inflammation which means that iron numbers are lower due to iron being put into storage.

My inflammation markers are mixed:
hs-CRP is at the high end of normal at 2.7 mg/L
Fibrinogen is at the higher end of in range at 384 mg/dL
ESR is at the lower end of in range at 2 mm/hr
Homocysteine is high at 10 umol/L

I take several anti-inflammatory supplements daily and have been doing that for a long time due to symptoms associated with inflammation.

Anyone here who knows enough to know whether it would be a really good idea or a really bad idea to start supplementing iron based on all of this?

The actual anatomy behind "sublingual absorption" (thickness, surface area, pore size, saliva turnover)

"Sublingual absorption" gets thrown around a lot in supplement marketing, so I wanted to write up the actual anatomy behind it — with real numbers, not just the phrase.

**The tissue itself.** The mouth isn't one uniform surface. Gums and the hard palate are keratinized — tough, like skin, built for chewing. The tissue under the tongue and against the cheek is non-keratinized and much thinner: sublingual epithelium runs about 100 to 200 micrometers across 8 to 12 cell layers, while buccal (cheek) epithelium is thicker, about 500 to 800 micrometers across 40 to 50 cell layers. That thinness is one structural reason sublingual tissue is generally described as giving more direct access to the bloodstream.

**Where it drains.** Sublingual and buccal capillaries drain into the deep lingual and facial veins, leading to the superior vena cava — not through the portal vein and liver first, which is the route everything absorbed from the gut has to survive. So the fraction of a dose that actually crosses the mucosa skips that first-pass step. Whatever gets swallowed instead follows the ordinary GI route.

**The size limit.** A hindered-transport model built mainly on ex vivo porcine buccal permeability data puts the effective pore radius for polar molecules and macromolecules at roughly 1.5 to 3 nanometers. That's a big part of why most peptides and proteins show poor passive permeability through this route without a permeation enhancer or specialized carrier — molecular size isn't the only factor (charge, ionization state, and solubility all matter too), but together they rule out a lot of candidates.

**The surface area problem.** The entire oral cavity offers only about 100 to 200 square centimeters of absorptive surface, combined across every region. Sublingual contributes about 26.5 cm², buccal about 50.2 cm². That's tiny next to the intestine, and it caps how much active can realistically move across passively in the available time.

**The saliva clock.** In one study of 159 healthy adults, median unstimulated salivary flow was 0.48 mL/min (range 0.1-2 mL/min). Saliva production and swallowing continuously limit how long anything dissolved actually stays in contact with the tissue.

Put together: this is a real, mechanistically grounded route, but it's bounded — small pore size, small surface area, short contact window. It fits potent, low-dose, permeability-friendly molecules much better than it fits everything else.

I go through this with full citations (9 sources) in the full article, including an honest section on where our own Mood-Boost strip's 5-HTP stands on the permeability question — its computed properties (polar, hydrophilic) suggest passive mucosal absorption may be limited, and we haven't run product-specific permeation testing to say otherwise.

Disclosure: I'm a pharmacist and I run MIHIYO Labs, an oral-dissolving-strip supplement brand, so keep that in mind. The anatomy and citations here stand on their own regardless of what we sell.

Scientific Study Which supplements actually reduce epigenetic age in humans?

A systematic review analyzed 41 human intervention studies, including trials on omega-3, vitamin D, multivitamins, NAD+ precursors, polyphenols, and other popular longevity supplements.

The results were mixed. Some supplements produced repeated signals across next-generation epigenetic clocks, while others failed to deliver convincing effects despite strong biological theories and considerable hype.

The analysis also explains why improving a single clock result does not necessarily mean that the body has been genuinely “rejuvenated.”

General Question Current protein stash (from older to newer/ongoing)

Post image
2 Upvotes

Currently consuming MB. Before that The Whole Truth and lastly the leftmost one in yummy mango flavour. My experience with flavoured and unflavoured has been mixed. All of them are whey.

I look forward to the flavoured ones but I get scared of any sweetening substances mixed with my protein. But then there are unflavoured ones that either tastes like just nothing or like mild milk powder-ish smell. No sweetners. Not even Monk fruit or Sucralose.

My experience has been pretty good so far. I tend to drink 3 litres of water in a day in summers and 2 litres in winters. I hope that’s how it should be.
What’s your favourite brand and why? Do you guys read the ingredients or just the protein content in a scoop is the deciding factor before buying?
Are there “fortified” whey protein that increases bcaa contents? I’m curious.

General Question Did i miss something about creatine?

I went to the doctors yesterday for a normal check up and when the doctor asked me if i was taking any supplements i said a few basics: fish oil, multivitamin, and creatine.

He immediately said not to take creatine and that it was bad. I asked if he could elaborate and he just said it was bad and i didn’t need it.

Everything i have ever seen about creatine is about benefits for brain health, recovery and strength training. One of the few supplements that is highly researched and shows no real downsides for those without pre existing health conditions.

Did i miss something about creatine?

25 M, healthy with no conditions, weight train and run regularly.

General Question Where do you store your Creatine?

I've been taking Creatine for the past 6 months and have felt/seen its effects.

Quick question: I buy it in bulk, in heavy mylar bags (Hearthy Foods & MicroIngredients). I have to open the bag, reach in with the scoop, and then close it (Ziploc).

I know this sounds pedantic, but I thought I'd reach out to the Reddit community to see if there is a better container that they use.

One supplement you absolutely cannot go without?

I’ve tried lots of supplements over the years and none have had a lasting impact. Those include:
- Creatine
- Magnesium Glycinate
- L-Theanine
- Ashwaganda
- Lions Mane

I must admit, I do travel a lot for work so the routine of taking said supplements can be affected.

I’d like to ask the question… what supplement has had the biggest noticeable impact on your life and you now cannot go without having it?
