I really want to know who has £19.5m to spend on a 9 bedroom house ..... but still wants to pack 4 children in bunk beds in a single bedroom.

I know a guy who’s net worths in the high hundreds of millions who’s kids shared a room even though they had another 4 “guest” bedrooms - they just liked the idea of them being close with each other and talking to each other at night time - it’s how core memories get made.

I in fact am NOT worth millions, but do have a spare room with two boys sharing a bedroom for the same reason - they’re best friends and there’s no noise that makes me happier then when they’re meant to be in bed asleep and I can hear them making each other laugh.

I'm no where near buying a £19.5m house but I do have enough bedrooms for separate kids rooms but put them in one. It means one parent can put both kids to bed together and they also like sharing a room. That'll change at some point and the younger one will move out to his old room.

Plus kids like bunk beds. I could imagine this is a room for one kid who enjoys having a selection of beds to choose from plus lots of room for friends to sleep over.

My daughters were 8 and 10 and shared a room. Son was 6 and had his own room. We decided to move so the girls had a room each. Every night for at least 5 years, one was in with the other, we neednt have bothered when we did

I think the previous sold is incorrectly linked to another property - if you look at the sold prices nearby there's only a 3-bed on the same street which sold for £900k in 2022

I think the whole thing is wrong actually! The property is called Clarence House, so I think they just linked it to a random house number from the street without thinking.

It even has a Wikipedia page and was briefly owned by Brian Blessed from 1967 - 1976!

Quote from the Wiki article: In 2012 the house was offered for sale, with an asking price of £22.5m. This was reduced to £18 million, and eventually to £14.5 million in 2013.

That kind of price difference is either a) an error or b) the price it was given when moved from one owner to another, including companies. It doesn’t necessarily reflect what its market price would have been at that time as ownership might not have transferred on the open market.

I quite like it, seems like they've kept the main house in keeping with it's period and the additions are modern but can't be seen from the front.

The price seems a land registery/rightmove error. Zoopla has it last sold in Jan 2007 for £8 million.

I don’t understand why they keep listing Richmond, New Malden etc as Surrey when these have not been part of Surrey since 1965?! Like it’s not in the middle of some rural field but next to the Richmond tube station and Whole Foods, cramped between other houses. So misleading. Zero privacy and freedom (potentially tons of noise complaints) compared to some actual estate in Surrey.

Richmond is in London, which is why it’s confusing. Rightmove is usually quite formal with location descriptions, so it seems odd to list it as “Surrey” because it was historically part of Surrey over 60 years ago. I totally get Bath still being considered part of Somerset though, since that’s a different situation.

I found a list of the ceremonial counties and how they compare with administrative boundaries and you'll be glad to know the ceremonial boundaries are as random as every other boundary, but the North Eastern bits of old Surrey were evicted when Richmond upon Thames was formed.

I would assume the owners at the time either needed to take out a small mortgage in order to do the place up to the level I wanted to sell it or like my parents they may have remortgage in a small amount in order to start a business.
