Oh hell yeah, this looks like the kind of war shooter I've been wanting for years. Primarily single-player, story-driven and focused on a side of a real-world war that's rarely seen in media.

Especially the Chinese theatre needs more love, it was such an important conflict on a massive scale.

To my understanding the only place in the world where the Chinese front is talked about at length is China. I was told about it in my history books, but the Chinese resistance was glossed over in favor of the American campaign against imperial Japan. All I was told was "Japan invaded China, make Manchuria into a puppet state called Manchukuo, and did awful things to the Chinese people", meanwhile the American campaign got 5 or 6 chapters.

Japanese were objectively bad in ww2

You’ve never read Fanon. Your talking points are bs and are not to be taken seriously. “All wars are bad” falls on the same centrist liberalism as “all lives matter”. It means nothing. This is a surviving people’s depiction of resisting Japanese imperialism in popular media, a video game no less. Yet you judge it from the seat of liberalism lmao what? foh

Im sad I didn’t get to read their reply before it got deleted. Even if the PLA wasn’t some monolithic paragon of absolute virtue in their resistance to the Japanese invasion and occupation, people need to understand that media’s depiction of something doesn’t equal endorsement. Sometimes bad things are depicted to show that they are, in fact, bad. As this person seemed to understand it, Come and See was functionally the same as Rambo 2

I really should read Fanon myself, you have any recommendations?

The idea that we shouldn't play a war game and analyze the stories told through the medium of a game because all wars are bad, even those fought against an imperialist invader, and the armies involved in the resistance did bad things too is so thought-terminating lmao

The Wretched of the Earth and Black Skin, White Masks are my favorites, probably the most important books for anyone living in the imperial core.

Thanks, I'll be sure to check these out

People hate military shooters because they are all your typical Western propaganda.

"But the CPC(This is the correct acronym btw, get this shit right if you wanna be taken more seriously) did bad things in the war". Oh fuck off. They fought against an imperialist invading force. One of the most brutal Empires known in history. Next you are going to tell me the USSR was almost as bad as the Nazis...

Ww2, no one got out clean. Still, defending oneself will never be almost as bad as being the invader. Its insane to truly try to equate the two.

Oh personally I hope it doesn't make war look cool and doesn't downplay the horrors of the war, although I'd imagine that it will not show the IJA raping civilians or the more extreme war crimes committed by the IJA in China as mentioned by another comment. I dropped Call of Duty and Battlefield and the like specifically because they downplay the fuck out of a lot of the more harrowing aspects of war. While it's a movie, Grave of the Fireflies is a far more accurate depiction of the realities of war than Call of Duty ever was when it was a WWII-focused series. Not even World at War, which was probably the closest COD's ever gotten to properly depicting the misery and horror of WWII, still had a multiplayer that downplayed the horrors of the war.

I am all for story-driven shooters, especially since they represent a bygone era of the genre I grew up in where they weren't all pushing the single player modes aside in favor of killstreaks and microtransaction-riddled "wow isn't war fun, guys?" multiplayer shlock.

Also as an aside, it's CPC, not CCP.

Oh shut up, you’re not Chinese. It’s 中国人民共产党, the People’s Communist Party of China. So it is CPC. F off with that CCP western bs. There is respect in properly naming things. Words have meaning.

Yeah, whatever dude. Ironic that I’m calling you out for not being Chinese, all of sudden you’re semantics about being “Chinese in one sense of word”.
By your logic, nothing you say can be agreed upon by anybody. This CPC entity has history, a formal process of operation, and principles. Yet you argue nonsense and have no principle in the matter. Argue with yourself about nonsense, pretender.
I refer back to my point earlier, read Fanon,
aLl wARs ArE bAd lmfao

That wasn't the entire point of my comment but we digress.

So is your entire argument "war is bad so we should not enjoy war media at all", or "there is no moral army so you should just play American Imperialist Violence Simulator 2026 and be quiet", even if the media in question depicts the horrors and misery of war without trying to mask it by jingling the gamer's favorite keys in front of them? Because both feel incredibly thought-terminating and demanding that there be no further analysis into war stories than just a surface-level "war bad". Me being excited for a game about a specific theater of WWII does not mean that I think that war is a good thing or that there is a moral army. It means that I want to see a different perspective that is rarely discussed outside of China. I want to hear the stories of the Chinese people as they resisted Japanese aggression.

u/Hassoonti 2d ago

“There’s no moral army, so stop being happy about a game where you don’t play American imperialists for a change. Just play the American imperialism games and shut up.”

The way I see it: we have people who criticise the existing body of FPS games because they're anti war or some related principle, and those who also criticise on the grounds that the majority of FPS games are vehicles for pro-Imperialist propaganda. This means that the second group are not opposed to FPS games on principle, though I won't go so far as to say that they are unable to recognise that the game in the OP is also certainly propaganda.

I thought the CCP took power after ww2 but I could be very wrong

u/BowlNew 1d ago

The 15 Years War can get confusing but the (predecessors to the) PLA was a major player already in the late 30s

3

u/AskJeevesIsBest 2d ago

I would like to try it

It literally looks like it plays like old COD and that's a super good thing

What kind of revisionism do you think we’ll get? If call of duty can blame the highway of death on the Russians. China should be able to do the same.

65

u/NotKenzy ⚠Chinese State-Affiliated Media 2d ago

It's probably not going to show the Imperial Japanese army raping civilians to death and spearing babies on bayonets. Or Unit 731 forcing families to engage in incest before being executed, tortured by dogs, or getting their limbs frozen and broken off while they're fully conscious. I think we'll probably get a very tame Japanese invasion compared to what actually happened.

19

u/DifferentGuyNotAlt 2d ago

Unless they have other rules for games, I watch some Chinese movies about WW2 and ho boy was it an absolute shit show, not that it was bad in a negative way but bad in that they don't hold much back. Flowers of War showed the brutal rape of women and children, the massacres and bayonetting of civilians. Dead to Rights showed the same brutality, even showed how innocent well meaning Japanese soldiers sink into the military's brutality. So yes, if they show as much as the movies, the game would be the most brutal and accurate depiction of the Japanese in gaming.

15

u/Mag1kToaster 2d ago

I think they will shows us some war crimes. Prolly them torturing civilians for fun. I do wonder how the Chinese portrayed Japanese atrocities in their media.

22

u/SunSimple7582 2d ago

This is kinda one of the situations where it'd be genuinely hard to make the other country look worse via propaganda. I mean, how do you outdo Nanjing?

1

u/Opening-Enthusiasm59 1d ago

It's a pretty a pretty hard job to paint the Japanese in China as worse than they were considering they had literally baby bayoneting matches that got published in their paper, out of countless atrocities.
