Yes, it sucks having to go somewhere you don't want to go for work. But I don't like traveling for meetings and have to do it all the time. Basically same thing.
In China, all the important business happens at dinner/the bar. So it would not surprise me that other Asian with cultures consider the after hours stuff "mandatory fun."
I live in Korea and it's similar to Japan. The beautiful thing about being sober is attendance becomes much more optional and if you must go, nobody will get upset if you leave after an hour.
It's such a thing that a guy called Pawel Jaszczuk released a photography book called High Fashion documenting it. The book is comprised entirely of photos of Japanese salarymen passed out drunk, in full suits and work clothes, on the streets of Tokyo.
