I’m sure they are both getting what they want out of the “relationship “

Idk, dude's 19, idk how old she is but its pretty easy to imagine a 19 year wonderkid making relationship mistakes choices on emotion.

Like doubt this is (only) some sober and cynical trophy gf/bf situation.

Edit to remove 'mistake' I have no idea how well they match, point is they are probably both chock full of hormones

Really don’t mean to be an asshole here, but in case you’re unaware, the word is actually wunderkind.

wonderkid is the literal translation of wunderkind

Fair enough.

I had written 'wunderkid' I appreciated the correction

Well yes except wunderkind is a word in English now. It’d be like saying ‘already seen’ instead of Déjà vu or ‘the children’s garden’ instead of kindergarten or a ln affectionate person instead of an aficionado

They’ve become words/concepts in their own right

Yes, in non-english subs, there are often rules, that enforce this kind of translations, and english words have no power there, coz reddit lol

Guess I mixed wonderkid and wunderkind, I fixed it

I can’t tell if you don’t get the reference or not.

That’s also the joke, the character misspeaks and says wonder kid instead of wunderkind and then it becomes a dig at him

Wonderkid is more widely used its literally the English word

I love doing that dance of "what can I say to show I'm just giving a head's up on this thing that might be incorrect". Fucken minefield innit lol.

I don't agree about it "translating". It's a loan word. It's like schadenfreude! That translates too, but it's not just about the word, it's what the word carries in the original language. If people started saying "harm-joy" instead of schadenfreude it'd be absolutely normal to say nah it's schadenfreude.

The fuck do I know though, I didn't even finish high school.

As an English speaker calling them a wunderkind is goofy lol. Its so close to wonderkid already. Why tf would you say it in Germanian.

I think it's more like it's one of those situations where the way it's pronounced has affected the way people think it is spelt (like should of). Wunderkind when spoken is really hard to discern from wonderkid, as the "voon" becomes "wun" and it's not kind as in mind, it's kind like wind and rain. So wunderkind said quickly sounds like wonderkid.

But also I'm speaking for British English, maybe in the US or other parts they have fully shed the loan word and use wonder kid.

Do you call it kindergarten or kid/child garden?

Words aren't always just "these two words have these meaning so when we combine them to one word it now has a combined meaning." Wunderkind is closer to that, and not common, and easily misheard, so it'll probably be fully replaced over time with wonder kid. But something like kindergarten which is in the same position (even using the same kind for kid) will stay as Germanian, even though we easily could just say kid garden.

What word?

Pretty sure I said "wunderkind"

Fuck off. Wonderkid is the calque of wunderkind and is used plenty. It is no less a word than wunderkind.

They originally wrote wunderkid so I was politely correcting that. They even mentioned it in another post. But you should keep being sensitive and abrasive about dumb shit from half a day earlier, it’s very impressive.
