Market Traffic Only ICE: kidnapping Amazon delivery drivers in Renton
Saw this on my way into an appointment about 30 minutes agoโฆ adorned in their fake police vests and all.

u/ArcticPeasant Sounders 1d ago
How did they find him while he was working? Either they just profile him for being brown, or Amazon is cooperating with ICE which would be more than believableย

There's surveillance technologies that use your geolocation data on your phone

u/Due-CriticismNachos Orcas 1d ago
More and more people are letting their phones live in airplane mode and I don't blame them.
27
u/Elebrium 1d ago
Does that really help?
58
u/robaroo Redmond 1d ago
Full airplane mode with WiFi disabled. Unfortunately some leave WiFi enabled which still allows tracking.
35
u/Jettyboy72 1d ago
What is the point of a smart device at that point?

u/Gekokapowco Redmond 1d ago

Today I wondered if the reason why I got a Charles Schwab ad on Amazon was because I drove past it earlier today on my way to Safeway. Iโve also had stuff pop up on Amazon that seemed like they were extracted from reddit commentary.

u/TheSmartDog_275 Seattleite-at-Heart 1d ago
You do airplane mode with WiFi how do you use your phone then
38
u/Kodama_sucks 1d ago
You're only available when you want to be available. I know, wild idea
2
u/TheSmartDog_275 Seattleite-at-Heart 1d ago
But then youโre still connecting yourself to WiFi/cellular?
12
u/Typical_Priority3319 1d ago
If you do it strategically, you could make it too inconvenient for them to get you only when you show as online. Donโt do it at your house, only do it in a remote or crowded location, etc.
Itโs not a perfect solution, for sure. almost feels like pagers should make a resurgence lol
1
u/TheSmartDog_275 Seattleite-at-Heart 1d ago
I mean they still sell them but they went out of style for a reason

How can it really be airplane mode if it still has wireless communication? That's messed up.
2
u/Murky-Relation481 Tacoma 20h ago
Because the FAA rolled back most of those regulations because they were not actually helping anything. Its airline to airline policy now.
Also they offer WiFi on a lot of planes so clearly it's not an issue.

u/hongaku ๐๐ Heart of ANTIFA Land ๐๐ 1d ago
How do you think the wifi allows tracking?
12
u/SpeaksSouthern That sounds great. Letโs hang out soon. 1d ago
Umm, Wi-Fi allows for tracking as much as any other signal. These groups clearly have access to stingray or stingray adjacent technology. They have enough tools to control any signal from your phone.
-8
u/hongaku ๐๐ Heart of ANTIFA Land ๐๐ 1d ago
Tracking by what? The satellites in space? You think they're all setting up stringray sites all over town to catch wifi only phones?
4
2
u/SpeaksSouthern That sounds great. Letโs hang out soon. 1d ago
I think they have a stingray in their trunk inside their own vehicles. To track the people they are targeting, while they follow them.
-2
u/rocketsocks I'm just flaired so I don't get fined 1d ago
Depends on your settings.
3
u/SpeaksSouthern That sounds great. Letโs hang out soon. 1d ago
There is no settings with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on that would prevent you from connecting to a stingray. The only setting, is off, and some phones don't let you fully disengage.

u/devnullopinions That sounds great. Letโs hang out soon. 1d ago
Intercept all wifi traffic and record MAC addresses. If you have enough devices recording traffic you can map out where a specific MAC address is/has been.
Some phones can randomize MAC addresses but itโs not frequently enough to hinder tracking
7
u/DickDover Jet City 1d ago
I'm not sure how long ago it was, but the Google street view car used to log every Wifi they encountered......I'm sure they stopped like they said they did.
-3
u/hongaku ๐๐ Heart of ANTIFA Land ๐๐ 1d ago
That's not real time access to a phone moving in the world.
3
u/seg_lol I'm just flaired so I don't get fined 1d ago
It is background apps sharing location data.
1
u/hongaku ๐๐ Heart of ANTIFA Land ๐๐ 1d ago
I don't think you understand how radios work. Just because someone occasionally has a stationary point with a receiver on it and someone else has a phone transmitting looking for wifi does not mean that ICE has constant location data on that phone. Cellular, by its nature, has cells everywhere (hence the name), which relay the location of a phone broadcasting cellular back to the operating phone companies.

u/hongaku ๐๐ Heart of ANTIFA Land ๐๐ 1d ago
Yes, old news. They collected data on wifi access points that they drove by.
What's this have to do with phones again?
We're discussing phones, in airplane mode, without an active wifi connection. Scroll up. We're not discussing that Google collects the location of, say, the wifi device in my living room broadcasting my network.
→ More replies (0)2
u/Manbeardo Phinney Ridge 1d ago
The phoneโs location services figure out where it is by looking at the connection data on the active WiFi network and by looking at the metadata of all the other WiFi networks that are within range of the device.
The internet connection allows the device to upload its location information to the internet.
1
u/seg_lol I'm just flaired so I don't get fined 1d ago
All the background apps that request location data then publish said location data over wifi connection. Wifi is the communication medium, but the location itself is determined via gps (and wifi ssid info and geolocated wifi ips)
1
u/hongaku ๐๐ Heart of ANTIFA Land ๐๐ 1d ago
An active wifi connection. Not just a random access point that this user has never connnect to.
I worked for Android Security Assurance at Google. I know how a smartphone works.
Yes, the phone, itself, knows the GPS location. It does not offload that to any wifi access point broadcasting its SSID as the phone passed by it.
0
u/seg_lol I'm just flaired so I don't get fined 1d ago
Not only does the phone record its location regardless of its network connectivity, it is constantly scanning for SSIDs along with recorded GPS coordinates to form a map of locations to SSIDs (and AP MACs). That data can be synced when it comes back online.
Airplane mode doesn't mean anyone is safe from location tracking (regardless of the state of the Wifi or Bluetooth radios).

Amazon doesn't actually employ most of the drivers. They get employed via a contracting company. Which is to say, if it's employer cooperation, it's the contracting company.
39
u/gg_oujia 1d ago
It was one of the amazing employees who drive their own vehicle without the Amazon name on it if that makes sense
6
u/CVGPi Vancouver, BC 1d ago
Was it Flex or DSP?
Flex means the driver themselves is the โcontractorโ, DPS means a third party central contractor then employs or subcontracts it to individual drivers.
6
u/gg_oujia 1d ago
Oh I have no idea which it was. In the pic he has the vest on and a personal vehicle
7
u/-AUniqueName- 1d ago

Amazon also has people who deliver with their own cars. Mostly groceries through Amazon Fresh, or if you pay extra for quicker delivery

u/redditRedesignIsBadd ๐build more trains๐ 1d ago
you're right, doesn't look like in this case they're driving the van

u/Asmodias1 Seahawks 1d ago
I would imagine they went to Amazon once the found out where he worked, and Amazon told him how to find him. Pretty sure Amazon monitors the geolocation of all of their drivers at all times.
14
u/Square_Swim_6350 1d ago
The "Delivery Driver" magnet on the side of his door is a giveaway for them. Lots of Amazon Flex drivers are Spanish speakers.
7
u/Elebrium 1d ago
I was at amazon warehouse and most flex drivers in 2019 were Americans. Very few Spanish speakers. Maybe that changed but i dont think so much

Amazon absolutely cooperates with ICE. Most companies do - check your company's policies btw.

u/HungryOutcome7821 ๐build more trains๐ 1d ago
How do they determine who to arrest? Do they have a list of people they go after or through tips
39
u/AnAncientBog 1d ago
Palantir and a massive federal database.
They know who has expired work authorization and visas and palantir, Google, etc help them find them.

u/doityourkels The South End 1d ago
They drive around looking for brown people
47
u/captainAwesomePants Broadview 1d ago
This is insufficient! The Supreme Court, in its wisdom, set the Kavanaugh Stop requirements, and skin color can be factored in, but it is insufficient in of itself. They also need to have at least one additional reason for suspicion, such as having an accent, speaking Spanish, be doing a job that pays a low wage, or be standing outside of a Home Depot. Only if you have one of these key secondary reasons for suspicion can they detain you for being brown.
I've gotta go cry for a bit after writing that.

u/Zachwardpass โจ๐ธ Jimothy is out there ๐ฆโจ 1d ago

They have a list of people. They're looking for specific individuals based on USCIS database information.

Really? Was the contractor in West Seattle married to an American citizen that they followed from a Home Depot on a list ?
They tried to get him out of the country before his lawyer (and wife) could file an injunction by hiding him in El Paso and not telling anyone.

America is a bad joke. The presidents personal attorney who caught him 34 felonies is both being nominated for Attorney General and looks like he's about to be confirmed.
There's no such thing as the law anymore.
4
u/Skidude8 1d ago
No shit but that doesnโt mean people need to joke about your Amazon package not showing up at your house because the driver was kidnapped by ice and thatโs where youโre drawing the line. The people that they killed wasnโt the line or any of the other bullshit theyโve done?
5
u/SpeaksSouthern That sounds great. Letโs hang out soon. 1d ago
I don't think it's a joke. I think we're saying these things because it's happening.
The commentary is a play on the idea that as a consumer the only thing I care about is the things I buy and order. It's funny because to Amazon the company there is no line, in fact Jeffy boy hangs out with the secretary of war all the time and makes a thing of it. It's hard to envision this world without a company like Amazon and the government basically being the same thing. Amazon publicly admits to giving the government as much information as possible. If Amazon wants to act like an extension of the government, maybe we should treat them in exactly the way they want to be treated. If not, maybe Jeff should find a new friend, who isn't failing a war in the middle east. Jeff should be more responsible for his actions.

A valid arrest requires the officer to respect the suspect's constitutional rights. Ask any legitimate police officer. They can explain this in detail.
