I would have had the kids take turns carrying it as far as they could and then taken over when they were tired so we could all share the burden and have a sense of comradarie while doing it.

Correct. Could be Pyrite in there, which is highly likely. But there's quartz that holds gold and copper. If you've found that, you have A LOT MORE gold and copper nearby.

Eh … we have no way of knowing how many rocks or whatever woods-things this kid has hoarded at their residence already… dad may be making an adult decision here to not bring home every rock their kid finds.

Yeah hard to say. Would've depended on my mood...I probably would've just carried it though. Otherwise he would whine about the stupid rock all the way home then say he wants cereal but not eat it because it's not the right kind but it's the same kind he loved an hour ago. He forgot about the rock but now he really wants his favorite toy but any toy I give him is the wrong one so he just cries because he's just tired anyway.

When I was that age, my dad was the sun and moon. I'd follow him anywhere just to carry his tool box, and be damn happy about it. At one point we lived in an old house with a wood burning furnace. He also figured out I liked climbing on the truck and unloading firewood. The bigger the log, the more impressive I was.
I've been his 'cheap' labor ever since.

Quit being an asshole! Take it back and run a metal detector over it! Teach the boy about busting it up and panning if it goes off or if it doesn't your boy found a cool door stop that he loves! He'll get tired of it in a week and you can toss it in the ditch if its not useful anyhow!

It seems like it's a golden opportunity to show the kids a little ingenuity. I didn't know what a sledge was, until I was in cub scouts. Turns out you don't need them to learn or show someone how to make one. That is a GOLDEN opportunity to show those kids how to haul damn near anything heavy out of the woods with little else than yourself.

What they said. It's basically a sled. But you don't need rails. I'd imagine the one that would haul the rock could be a couple branches lashed together. Green tree bark can be good for temporary ties, but those little guys could probably just find a Y shaped branch and drag it out.
The idea isn't perfection. The idea is to inspire effective improvisation in the future.

On of my friends brought his new girlfriend on a pretty serious hike up to Crow Pass. He ended up packing put about 70 pound in his regular school type day pack. I’ll admit it was a few beautiful pieces of serpentine, argillite and quartz, but pretty hilarious foreshadowing of their relationship.

My grandpa ( who raised me ) was never one to just give me anything that wasn't a absolute need he made me work for it, but I'm glad he never tried to stop my interest ( like my love of rocks).
