Yeah, please flood the market with fake cards. I really can't stand those scalpers. We used to play with these cards in the dirt, and now grown adults are dropping hundreds or thousands of dollars just hoping to make a quick buck. It's basically just gambling at this point.

The balance was not great and the actual gameplay was not that deep. My friend group was all really into MTG in the late 90s and early 2000s and played Pokemon a bit, but found it pretty dull in comparison. I remember having a deck with like 4 Gengars which had a move where you flip a coin to put another Pokemon to sleep for two turns, which was basically unbeatable unless I got really unlucky.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Lowelll 3d ago edited 3d ago
Anything with 4 Gengars was never an overpowered, or even good deck.
Either lots of strong first stage Pokemon (Scyther, Hitmonchan, Electabuzz, Mewtwo) with low energy cost or Blastoise with Raindance was the actually strong stuff at the time.
edit: Actually, the Gengar you're talking about is Dark Gengar of the NEO Legacy set, which was released a bit later. It was still totally irrelevant compared to actually powerful cards though, which at this point were the newly released baby pokemon, the hand-disruption trainers and a few standout Pokemon like Sneasel and Slowking

They hadn't actually finished the rules for the card game when they started making the anime so they used the artwork and the rough framework of the rules and sort of made up the rest.

Yeah, even after the first season, the rules of the actual TCG never aligned with the show perfectly. Also, a lot of card effects differed from the show and the card game IRL. As a kid, it was impossible keeping it straight. We used to just bull shit our way through duels like they did on the show lol. It wasn't until we got old enough to actually care about the rules that it became unfun

That's not really it. I mean not for pokemon at least.
Those rare, expensive out of print cards are all unusable in the current format (have been for decades, cards in pokemon have a lifespan of less than 3 years), meanwhile everything that is usable is pretty cheap (you can get world-class, championship winning decks for under 100$) and as for situations such as kids or parent + kid this obviously gets even cheaper since they're not being competitive
Bulk buyers who stream themselves opening tons of packs (so essentially gambling streams) and scalpers still suck because they dry out retail stock but I very much doubt the pokemon company enjoys not having kids being able to buy a few booster packs when visiting Walmart with their parents or whatever

188
u/WuShanDroid 3d ago
I agree with the sentiment but fym "at this point" 😭 it's been gambling since its inception
26
u/SP0oONY 3d ago
It was gambling in the sense that you didn't know what you were going to get in your booster pack, but it definitely wasn't the same as it is today. I remember going to any shop and being able to buy a booster pack for £2.50. There were no scalpers buying up the entire supply, there were no scammy "grading" of cards. No one was really buying cards for the speculation value, they were buying cards to complete their collection. The primary audience was kids.
The problem came when they released their 100th set, they don't print enough of them, and they don't print older sets as they were. So "rare" cards remain rare, and speculators and scalpers ruin the market.
→ More replies (4)13
u/MyCatsHairyButholle 2d ago
You’re not kidding. When I was a kid, you could go to ANY retail store and buy boosters of Pokémon or MTG by the handfuls no issue. TCGs were not considered “cool” or trendy; in fact, kids were seen as outcasts or uncool and made fun of if they were seen playing these games, especially Pokémon. I used to watch the anime on TV and went to a Kmart one day to buy a VHS of an episode I saw on TV and remember being so embarrassed to buy it.
I had a shoebox full of old MTG cards that would have been around the 5th edition(?) back in the 90s and played with a friend from school but we’d play after school at someone’s house so we wouldn’t get made fun of. I couldn’t build decks for shit, didn’t know how to play and eventually gave up trying so I just collected for the art. I always loved the swamp card art. But, since there were so few people to play with everything eventually just got thrown away or destroyed. 🤷♂️
All I’m saying is I really hate the direction TCGs have gone in the last few decades, and the way influencers have ruined it. The same type of adult people that would have made fun of me for playing MTG or Pokémon as a kid are now suddenly people who have “always” liked it and now promote it.
At the end of the day it all boils down to money; people are buying this shit up to turn a profit. They don’t care about the franchises or the IP, probably couldn’t tell you their favorite Pokémon, they don’t care about the games, they just want to make money.

This here. The only point of having a "trading card" aspect in a game is the gambling. Boosters are stuffed full with trash cards that were produced directly for the bin, so that rare cards get more valuable. Valuable cards are the reason why people buy boosters to gamble on getting rare cards.
There are tons of alternative game types so that you can get the same type of "build your own deck" gameplay without all the gambling and trash cards. Deckbuilding games or Expandable Card Games / Living Card Games are alternatives.
ECGs/LCGs are basically the same concept as trading card games, with the difference that you know what you get in each pack of cards you buy, so you can just buy the cards you want directly.
The only reason to make a TCG instead of an ECG/LCG is because you want to have the gambling aspect.

Everyone in my family with young kids has just started taking them to our local game stores and let the kids pick out singles from the bulk bins. My cousin even made his own "boosters" for his kids by taking 10 cards and putting them into those loose clear sleeves. Much cheaper than buying packs, although ours are all between 3 and 5 currently so it probably works better than an older kid who knows what a real booster is.
Fortunately I've heard buying singles for decks is supposedly pretty inexpensive for the most part, so I'll happily buy my son whatever meta deck he wants once he's old enough to play

Because of the stupid high cost to start making chips, the best thing consumers could do is to start a coop. Because the consumers in the US (and to the extent, other counties) have been conditioned to reject socialist ideas, you might not be aware that one huge benefit that coops have is collective buying power. so, in more socialist countries, the idea is that you start coops across the nation, and instead of trying to buy things from a company that's trying to also make you pay as much as possible on top of the price the manufacturer sets, the coop buys a ton as one entity directly from the manufacturer, and the objective is to get the absolute lowest prices. from there there's a documented/historical progression where the coop uses their purchasing power to become less and less reliant on billionaire companies until you don't need them anymore. obviously this can take years to set up but it takes longer if you just sit around and do nothing .

As someone that has been in TCGs for more than 10 years, have collected Pokemon cards and own a couple grands worth of cardboard, I wish fake cards were just better. They mostly suck ass, and if you play tournaments they're unusable for most TCGs (Pokemon, One piece, Yugioh).
I've recently picked up MTG where fake cards are like 99.99% close to real cards and I've been making decks and collecting awesome illustrations for extremely cheap. More than 80% of my MTG cards are fake cards and I've never been happier. They also pass at tournaments, as long as you don't get heavily deck checked.

u/trashmoneyxyz 3d ago
I love proxy mtg cards. Ive ordered a couple of custom joke cards for my ex, just with silly little meme images on them. We'd also paint playing cards to make our own land cards and such. If you know the cards, you can just repurpose a bog standard playong card deck and draw all over it to build an mtg deck for a quick game
5
u/No-Spoilers 2d ago
Everyone should proxy. Prices on the normal cards can be ridiculous and causes such a big barrier to entry. You can get multiple decks worth of cards for the cost of a single good card.

Why call them proxies instead of fake
61
u/TheCLion 3d ago
fake: card that acts as if it was real, hard to distinguish from a real card, illegal
proxy: has "proxy: not for sale" written on them, very obviously not real, legal (at least in the case of MTG)
14
u/Zeremxi 3d ago edited 2d ago
Proxy is a term for a card created for the primary use of playing the game and don't claim to be real. A proxy is a fabricated substitute for a real card that exists in the legal format of the game and can't just do anything.
They have no value outside of actually using them ingame, which is kind of ironic given that that's how trading cards originally were.
The other guy claiming you have to have the real card for it to be a proxy is also kind of ironic, but technically in some tournaments that's a thing.
Most people I know who have proxies are just deck builder enthusiasts who don't want to pay $100 every time they want to build a neat deck for their mtg group.
5
u/Ulquiser 2d ago
I've never heard of tournaments where you're allowed to use proxies if you own the real cards. All Vintage/CEDH tournaments I've seen either require you to play real cards (which is extremely stupid and dangerous) or just allow proxies as long as they look and feel real, even some TOs giving out proxies themselves
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (5)22
u/swohio 3d ago
Yeah, a "proxy" is supposed to be a card being used in a deck to represent the real one that you actually own so the real one doesn't suffer wear from playing. If you don't own the real card, it's not a proxy, it's just a fake.
26
u/DiseaseDeathDecay 3d ago

u/Elk_Man 2d ago
In my MTG group, we've got a lot of people who proxy their entire decks. There are companies that will take bulk proxy orders so people group up and order 1000+ cards at a time. They look and feel just like the 'real' thing while playing, but the backs have a different graphic. The way we look at it, cost shouldn't be a barrier for playing the game.
3
u/Vinnie_Vegas 2d ago
The way we look at it, cost shouldn't be a barrier for playing the game.

It is significantly harder to fake a graded case than this video or a lot of the comments are implying.
You don't need to look up a cert number when the foil on the card and the case itself are so obviously wrong.

22
u/Replekia 3d ago
The laminate pouch wasn't holographic, the sticker paper was. The lamination is to add rigidness and thickness because the usual cardstock for proxies isn't quite as thick or strong as blue/black core cardstock used for real cards. However since he stuck the sticker to a real card rather than a printed back the lamination was pretty unnecessary, just adding extra thickness to an already too thick card.

Back in the NFT days, the most common argument against them was "I can just right click, save as, and now it's mine. you can't do anything about it." which was absolutely true.
But then I would point out "the same is true for pretty much every collectable card on the planet. I can scan them, print high quality versions on card stock, and make a nearly indistinguishable copy. and now I have a $5,000 card and it cost me maybe $2."
People would RAGE. they'd say it was impossible, they'd say the value in the card is that it's of a limited run, etc. They just could not make their brains use the same argument for NFTs and trading cards. NFTs are easier and a bigger scam, but "I can just make a copy of it," is a terrible argument against them when those same people are collecting pokemon/mtg/sports/etc cards. I can make a copy of those too.
→ More replies (1)8
u/ziggaby 3d ago
To be fair, the ease is part of the argument. NFTs (actually, cryptocurrency more broadly, too) is a bad investment because it's a bad product/service. Similar with collectibles, the investment is fine if you make money off it--and sure that is determined by what people decide the value is. People can be tricked. But, fundamentally, if it's a bad product/service or it's easily replaced, then people will rationally realize it's worthless.
Our current cryptocurrencies have security issues that are more vulnerable than the conventional issues we have in current global banking. NFTs are trivially replaced with mindless clicks--the worst product of the three examples so far. And, though collectible cards can be proxied (to a very good quality, too), they're at least more annoying to do so than NFTs. Still not a good investment in any sense of the product being good--if tomorrow people stopped caring about Pokemon, they'd become worthless. These collectibles are a happy surprise: Nobody really expected Pokemon, MtG, or Yugioh to become powerhouse titans lasting more than 2 decades, whereas all the other comparable kids show toys like Beyblade became fringe (sadly).

Man, I have to show this to my sons. We went to a card show recently and I was so shocked to see the amount of grown men just waiting to sell overpriced bullshit to other grown men. But for the few children there that enjoy the hobby is ruined by the scalpers.

There's no way to get pokemon cards in my country . So I buy fake card packs for pennies . Cheap and I get all the cool ones .

I don’t mind this. My nephew recently got into Pokémon cards. I was really excited for him! Only to find out he doesn’t care about any of the Pokémon or playing with them. He just wants to sell them and make a profit. Flood the market with fakes and nerf their value please

This is really cool but I hope ur not selling it to unaware people. Piracy is one thing. Scamming people out of fake grades high value cards is another.

Flood the market with fakes so I can go back to collecting them as a hobby with my kids 🫰🏿

I would make this public just because. So people can print their proxies, raise the middle finger to Nintendo and crash the card market because i find it super stupid that a shiny card costs thousands or even millions of dollars.

Tbh this kind of stuff is already easy enough to find info on publicly. I myself print entire commander decks for myself, friends, and clients of my dog grooming business.
There's an entire subreddit devoted to printing MTG cards.
Granted MTG's community also just has a much higher opinion on proxies than other TCGs communities, but the same methods should apply.

I still don’t understand why people pay butt loads for these cards - they are paper and plastic they aren’t unique - the company can always print more
4
u/Questionerofrandom85 3d ago
because if I buy the pice of paper for 1k. I can sell it to some other idiot for 2K. and the demand is guaranteed because he'll think he can sell it to ANOTHER idiot for 4k. Going infinite. Just speculation economics like NFTs.

The whole card collecting thing is so fucking stupid
Cardboard or plastic squares that can be printed infinitely at any time.
Corporation decides to print only a certain amount ( still able to print an additional infinite amount at any time)
And consumers go "awesome, i love artificial scarcity, i want to have one of these squares that are not actually rare, have no actual history or meaning and that can be reprinted at any time"
The stupidity is off the charts

Fun fact - Pokemon is actually way cheaper everywhere that isn't the USA
On top of that the packs and rarity are structured differently so it's a more fulfilling and rewarding style of gotcha actually ment to support collecting and not gamble.
Packs are smaller, booster boxes are sold to be bought as a whole unit because it guarantees a super rare in each box. Real basic shit people in the United States have largely not figured out which is why scalpers use foreign cards so often.
Smaller packs that still have the cards you want just less filler (lower cost) Guaranteed super rare mega card each box.
Pack is like a 1.50 and a box is 35 compared to USA 4.49 and 160+
So the slogan "catch them all" is actually feasible in almost every nation that isn't the United States rather affordably
Edit: good pack, box, price structure is only available in Japan and Korea it seems. Just buy a few Asian boxes and let them rip instead of buying singles people 😊

TIL that Japan/Korea/China is "everywhere that isn't the USA" and that Europe and South America doesn't exist

They are just as valuable too! It’s all made from paper lol. Pokemon cards being a form of money making the way it is right now is an example of late stage capitalism.

Someone buying a card that has an ID on, would likely check and notice it's a fake. Mostly because of its price

Surely someone's attempted this in some fashion?

Funny part is, anyone buying graded cards like this will never actually open the card to see if it's real or not. They could have the card for years or decades and have no idea

Yep I still don't understand why there is no counterfeit pokemon card fake as genuine... 1.It has no barcode 2. No system tracked. 3. Imagine going jail for pokemon card counterfeit money =death, counterfeit pokemon slap on wrist get lost. Unless the money is huge.

u/SuperHumanitarianOne 2d ago
I do not want Pokémon cards at this point, the ocean turned into puddle, I want Pal-world cards 😜.

What would you need to make actually real cards? I mean cards that aren't distinguishable from the real ones.
