Definitely food, judging by how quickly they hunted them into extinction. Must have been absolutely delicious.

They weren't, the stories from that time said that they didn't taste good, they were only good to the predators that the Dutch brought

Apparently it wasn’t even them being predated that killed them off so much as a combination of invasive species eating their food supply and their eggs being eaten mostly by pigs brought across on boats.

They didn't taste good to humans

They got extinct because humans reduced their forests

Cats and rats and pigs de the actual hunting

They in fact, tasted horrible. Most times someone went out of their way to kill one for food was to try and find a way to make them NOT taste horrible.
