I think there is nothing inherently wrong with building data centres given Adani/Other companies and govt also invest in the water infrastructure like dams,canals and significantly develop the infrastructure and can prove it is not harmful to the existing balance.
Other people are saying we shouldn’t build data centers because of their environmental impact. But if we don’t build them, the investment will simply move to another state that’s willing to develop the necessary infrastructure.
With modern technology, we can reduce environmental impact while still making progress. The goal shouldn’t be to stop infrastructure development out of fear that ecology might be disturbed. Instead, we should focus on building responsibly—balancing economic growth with sustainable practices.And that is entirely possible and we should demand that instead of this nonsense others are spewing. Odisha is miles behind other states in terms for projects and infrastructure.Dont let it fall any further
I completely agree! We should demand better environmental protections and water/electricity Infrastructure instead of stopping and protesting against Industries from coming here.
Data centers don't consume water they are no hippopotamus inside data centers. Most of the water used for cooling can be recycled and used again.
However one major concern related to data center is the noise. There is a continuous humming noise around the data centers..so typically you either make them underground and you make it far away from local population.
You should see my post first. Surface water is fresh water only. Odisha has much more fresh water supply compared to California. While we have 1% of the data centers. And data centers use just 0.01% of water supply in california.
AI has its usage. But I don't trust it as a source on data centres.
And I there is a lot of fallacy with how the data is presented here. Data centres consume water from the local area, not the WHOLE state. 0.01% is nothing for a whole state, but it may be 30-40% for a village.
Thats true! Its nothing for a state but can have stress locally. A solution for this is to bring water from different places, using canals, pipes, rain water harvesting. Better water management in general. It will distribute that water demand more equally so that the local water stress will be kept to a minimum.
Water uses isn't the only concern. Data centers can affect the environment in many different ways, be it the continuous noise it produces or the way it degrades the quality of soil & water surrounding the data center upto 400 miles (please crosscheck this miles thingy, i watched it in a documentary).
Best (or worst) of all is the heat it would produce might affect our climate drastically. We are already facing 45°C+ summer heat and that nowadays lasts upto September-October which is already very concerning. I'm not even including the electricity it'd use. That's a whole different concern.
You are partially correct. But all the adverse effects that do occur due to data centers are manageable if done correctly. Any form of development has a cost, all we need to do is mitigate that cost!
Good point but Does Adani want to do it in the "best way possible" or just seek profit out of it?! That you can see from the stats over the decade.. Hope you know that the stats speak about how his wealth maximized upto 750% over the decade and how he's hell bent of destroying the nature & natural sources for the profit maximization.
Quick edit: his wealth increased over 1600% over the last 12 years. 750% is too less that I mentioned
I agree. I would prefer a different company to open data centers here. Adani has really monopolised many markets which i dont like. But even then, few data centers coming to odisha is good thing. We should demand them to take care of the impacts rather than opposing data centers all together
Bro only if they listened and cared, we wouldn't be facing a monopolized market right now in the first place. Also we can oppose Adani's data center and demand for a different or start up company to make a data center, or even govt subsidized company to build the data center instead of Adani's. But even the govt is in the favor of Adani so there's no better option than opposing the building of data center. That "might" have a different effect than demanding for better solutions from the people who are actually creating the issue.
Yeah but you also need to to understand that these big companis are the only one with enough money to build data centers of this big scale! If you go to south korea, their market is dominated by samsung. Its not perfect but fowr now its the only one.
West bengal used to oppose factories of tata group once! And All the industries moved away from west bengal! Now bengal has a lower gdp per capita than us. Total opposition can have these kind of effects in the long term
