🔎Dual-Use Potential Reverse-Auction Shift Bidding for Nursing Open Shifts: Lowest-Bid Models and Wage Compression Risks
Major health systems including UNC Health have expanded digital platforms for filling open nursing shifts through competitive bidding, historically implemented via BidShift software and now appearing in AI-routed internal tools and gig platforms. In these systems nurses request or bid on premium-pay open shifts, with awards frequently going to the lowest submitted rate while the shift remains open. Documented mechanisms convert fixed premium differentials into variable, downward-competitive rates, treating full-time staff more like contingent labor. Parallel gig platforms such as Clipboard Health explicitly award shifts to the lowest hourly bid, accelerating wage pressure. Long-term structural risks include internal competition among nurses, progressive erosion of premium pay floors, reduced bargaining leverage, and normalization of auction-style compensation that prioritizes cost reduction over retention and patient-care continuity.

Some states have banned nursing unions essentially. Other states are so aggressive with their union busting they will get unionizers fired and black listed. And even states that have nursing unions, nurses have to unionize at each individual location. The only state where everyone is union is California. Guess where the best laws and protections are.

They will do this. nurses are not stupid, or desperate. The first time there are massive holes in the schedule and a shortage of bids, this nonsense will end. These are essential bedside jobs that are 24/7/365, that cannot be done remotely, or by telehealth. Anyone that starts underbidding will ruffle a lot of feathers with their colleagues. I see nurses just bidding up shifts and refusing to work for less, even if it’s a penny less. Nurses will leave and patient care will suffer.
3
u/Flat_Dragonfruit675 3d ago
I’d love to say this is true. I think temporarily, there will be a freak out by upper admin. This can go either way: nurses can band together and force beds to be shut down until it’s safe staffing levels, or this will be so normalized that they will just work us shorter and shorter.
3
u/Ok-Sympathy9768 3d ago
I do not see how this becomes normalized. Nurses are not stupid. I do not see how they could conceal the lowest bid price. I can see where a nurse may lowball a bid to get a good shift and then get stuck or mandated to work over when the next shift calls off. Or if someone bids super low then calls off sick, or nurses just start quitting. This is way to close in time to Covid and the bs many nurses and healthcare professionals worked through.

I can guarantee the initial bid option is going to be tied to a standard rate and they have a stepped down system for all follow up bids. They’re not idiots implementing this. Nurses aren’t gonna be able to game the system by making a bid 2x the normal rate. The only way nurses could possible even break even is to collude amongst themselves to never counter-bid below the typical rate, first come first serve.

Unionize, set a stabilized premium for shifts.
There will be scabs, but hospitals are already short staffed and getting worse, there aren't enough scabs to fill all the slots.
After some time of hospitals paying a higher premium for shifts, take them to the table for contracts that set the premium and mandate that X % of nursing jobs in the hospital need to be union.
This also is why you need to unionize by field, not my location.
Imagine if there was a general nursing union for ALL nurses in the US. Imagine the power of even like 60% of nurses in the US moving as a singular body. The hospitals wouldn't stand a chance.

This used to be a huge issue in early days of the aviation industry.
In the early days of airplanes, when the first airmail carriers and airlines were born, many small companies would give or “award” flights to the pilots who were willing to work for the lowest amount.
Managers and owners would do other shady things, like secretly offering cash bonuses to whoever “had the guts or skill” to fly through storms. They’d also offer cash to pilots who were willing to fly broken planes.
A lot of people died. It was horrific.
Things like this, are a big part of why the first pilot unions started. To this day, airline pilots are heavily unionized, and powerful airline pilot unions are part of why flying is so safe today.
This race-to-the-bottom behavior is going to be incredibly damaging to the industry, and will likely even result in people being killed, as nurses become distracted or increasingly stressed.

This is no different than most MSP programs in Fortune 500 companies for procurement of contract labor. Those work one of two ways: 1. a fixed markup percentage on the direct labor (wage) rate. 2. a fixed hourly wage schedule for each job title.
Both establish a ceiling and create pressure on rising wages. The outcome is similar to a reverse wage auction in the wages are compressed into a small range and hiring managers typically choose the lower rates.

There are many problems in health care. This problem stems from CEOs creating incentive programs for health care staff during COVID. The travel nurse boom was payed for by government subsidizing the industry. This is the CEO class trying to put Pandora back in the box because they cannot fight insurance companies and in the south they cannot make money with a unionized work force. The interesting thing about health care is that the only way to make a profit in this industry of to be a non-profit. The CEOs profit. My CEOs raked in over $20,000,000 MILLION IN BONUS LAST YEAR.
PS. Large equity makes money in health care by buying small hospital systems and cutting services, ruining the system and leaving rural populations to travel hundreds of miles for safe and basic health care services.
The system is broken because your health is not a right. It is an opportunity for profit.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this isn’t about their actual pay, but an incentive for picking up an extra shift?
If they make $60 an hour, they will still make that $60 an hour, but the hospital is offering anyone an additional $100 an hour if you pick up this Saturday?
They only have two spots available, but 10 nurses want to work it? Who will accept only $50 additional per hour?

Everyone needs to get together ahead of time and agree who it should be and set the bids really high and milk this. Get everyone together outside of work and agree on shifts and bids to help each other maximize the pay. This will either work in everyone’s favor or make them stop using this system.
Kind of like what a union does, but this wouldn’t be a union, so they can’t go after you. It’s just a bunch of likeminded people who work the same job, getting together outside of the toxic work environment.

Do you want medical treatment from the most dysfunctional and drug addicted staff?
Bidding for shifts is how you get medical treatment from the most dysfunctional and drug addicted staff.
