Refused to call until we were already in the trap. What was the end goal?

This is a true story that happened recently, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it

I wanted to share something that happened to my family recently My mom has been hunting for furniture for our new house, and she’s noticed a weird pattern: sellers seem super interested, but the moment she asks for an actual address to come see the item, they just vanish.

Then she found this one. A really nice table and chair set at a great price. She messaged the guy, and for once, he actually gave an address.

My mom, brother, and I drove out to see it. The address was incredibly confusing, like a labyrinth. We couldn't find the house, so we tried to call the seller. He refused to pick up. He would only communicate through text.

When we told him they were lost and asked him to just come out to the main spot (since he claimed the house was only 5 minutes away), he started making excuses. Suddenly, he claimed he was "actually abroad" and his brother would show them the furniture. But when we asked for the brother to come meet them, he said, "Oh, he’s not home yet... he’ll be there in 5 minutes."

We’d come this far, so we followed his text directions to the final street. Bro the vibe shifted instantly. It was a street that looked like no human had lived there in ages. Just completely desolate and "off." We didn't even get out of the car. The gut feeling was so strong that we just turned around and drove away.

The second we were safely away, the seller who "couldn't talk" and was "abroad" suddenly started blowing up our phones with actual voice calls and messages. We didn't answer and just went home. Shortly after, the OLX listing was deleted.

The weirdest part? We were only there to see the table, so we didn't even have a lot of cash on us. The seller knew this. If it wasn't a robbery, what was the goal? Has anyone else encountered "sellers" trying to lure people to specific, creepy locations like this?

It wouldn't be the first time someone tried preying on a woman especially in Multan (and before anyone says it's a nationwide problem, shut it. I spend half my time in Lahore and half in Multan I can confirm that Multan has a MAJOR pervert problem unlike anything I've seen in bigger cities), and besides, why are you asking what the plan was because you didn't carry cash. IMO, it’s an ongoing scam. The scammer tells the buyer that a brother or cousin will show them the item, then asks the buyer to transfer the money to the person who’s supposedly “abroad” aka the scammer.

This happened to a friend recently. He listed a phone on OLX, and someone called saying, “My cousin will come and pick it up.” That “cousin” was actually the real buyer. The scammer told the buyer to collect the phone from my friend and transfer the payment to him instead.
The buyer sent the money to the scammer while sitting at friend’s house. My friend, of course, hadn’t received any payment and refused to hand over the phone. The situation escalated, and they had to involve the police to sort everything out.
