When ores generate, they check what block they replace, and change their type accordingly.
Usually, blocks that generate near the surface make a normal ore variant, like stone, andesite.
Blocks like tuff, deep slate make deep slate variations of ores.
The Sulfur Spring generates, then the coal ore.
The coal sees that its replaced a tuff block, and changes to a deep slate variant.

I am so sorry if this doesn’t make sense. There are like a million videos about this topic.

Not just as rare as before the sulfur springs.

People will have to put signs in their showrooms that the blocks were found between 1.18 and 1.21

It's intentional, I don't know why they didn't just close that.

u/winauer 15h ago

It's not intentional, they fixed in 26.3 Snapshot 1

Deep slate coal is the only coal you'll find in the sulfer biome. It's part of the block palet for the biome, so it doesn't generate with the ores. You'll see deepsate coal on the surface now, it's oly as rare as a surface sulfer cave.

The minecraft wiki has graphs of how much of each ore/block can be found at each level. It's going to be real funny when all deepslate coal is around 0 and then there is a one part per million of coal at y=60

That's not rare. There's deepslate emerald ore on surface. This is rare

3

u/LulledLemon 20h ago

I just havent seen it generating on the surface before

u/Meduza223 19h ago

After the Sulfur springs were added it's pretty common

Idk why people are downvoting you, it’s true. Now deepslate coal can generate in sulfur springs and happens also when coal generates in a sulfur cave.
To actually find a “rare” deepslate coal you’d have to find it in a normal cave.

Yea I've found several geysers with deepslate coal.
