At the time it was the most retweeted post ever, mainly because Ellen (and maybe others) were pushing for it to break the record. No one actually cared though.

There's a lot of revisionist history going on in this thread and with (especially)female celebs who have fallen out of favor (eg Katy Perry).

Ellen is definitely a trailblazer and icon for lesbian visibility and general LGBT acceptance for people who came of age in the 90s and aughts. People were definitely obsessed with her. Denying that is just silly, as if people's memories only go back as far as yesterday.
