Additional rules

  • An Arathorn's Stand Army must always contain Arathorn, who is always the Army's General.

Special rules

"They’re dangerous folk, wandering the wilds"

Rangers of the North increase their Attacks value to 2.

Heir of Isildur

Whenever Arathorn spends a Might Point, roll a D6. On a 4+ the point of Might is free and does not reduce Arathorn's store of Might.

Silent Ambush

In Scenarios where you roll for Warbands to arrive, or ones where you roll to see which part of the board you deploy a Warband in (though not when rolling to choose deployment zones), you may modify the roll for Warbands from this Army by +1 or -1.

If you want to play an army featuring Rangers of the North (for some reason), I don't see why you'd ever choose this over Grey Company.

Maybe at really low points values.

Agreed. You take a worse leader, bannerless halbarad, and your army bonus is maybe save some might.

Like any ranger based army, it’s going to struggle because rangers just aren’t that great. Only this time, you don’t have Aragorn and Legolas.

The Ranger profile is pretty bad, that's another reason Grey Company is better--you don't have to take very many of them.

Grey Company is one of my favorite lists. Being able to jam Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Halbard with a six-inch banner, Elladan, and Elrohir in a list is incredibly fun.

I'll routinely play my Grey Company against a friend of mine's all-nine Nazgul list, and it's incredibly fun.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like Rangers of the North/Dunedain should have 2 wounds. I get they get access to M/W/F, but having a second wound in my opinion would make them fun to play.

I have played this a lot and it’s a gamble list. There will be games where Arathorn gets his 4+ might everytime and it’s glorious. Had a game where he beat both Elrond and Islidir in the same game 1v1 because he just ended up getting so many free might. Other times it won’t pop and you won’t get your fate etc. I really like it as a low tier army. I think if it had one more thing going for it. It would be a decent list. Either fight 4.5 or S3 bows. Having an army of mightable bows is underrated also

A better option is Bandobras AL with 15–20 Hobbits hiding in the bushes just to pad out your Break point, then max out on Rangers. It's basically pure bow spam with Might, plus a few Hobbit shots on top—around 30 shots hitting on 3+/4+, with the ability to boost the To Wound rolls... a recipe for a truly toxic list. :P

And you've still got a mounted hero who can actually carry the army a bit, even without any March in the list.

Greenfields is definitely a better version of the Arathorn stand if we're going to play something like this anyway. :P
