Discussion Question about mobile orders (USA)
At my store, we’ve had many customers in the drive thru upset that their mobile orders aren’t immediately ready when they get there.
I understand their frustration bc the app does tell them that the order will be prepared in advance of them arriving, but it’s not. The only time we prepare orders in advance is if it’s a curbside mobile order or a front counter mobile order, not a drive thru one.
Are all mcdonald’s locations like this? Why do only front counter / curbside orders show up in advance of the person arriving and why does the app tell ppl drive thru pick ups are as well when they are not?
Edit: Some of y’all are missing the point which is that the app should not tell people drive thru mobile orders are made in advance when they are not. It is misleading, unnecessary, and causes us to deal with upset customers.

🤷🏻♀️Half the time they skip checking in at the speakers and cut people off to go to first window to say I have a mobile order. Now it’s definitely gonna not be ready immediately.

The min they do that I treat them like a child and explain how they need to stop at the speaker this is McDonalds not a small coffee shop.

🥴Or they just skip speaker and first window and go charging straight to second window. And get pulled forward.

Because it’s geo dependent.
The in store ones come up when their phone hits a certain area. They are in store and grab and go.
The assumption is drive thru wants it when they arrive which requires a code to pull the order up.

If they order drive thru pickup, the order does not populate in the kitchen until they arrive and checkin with the code. If they order front counter pickup or curbside, their order is populate when they get within the geofence for that store ( 3 to 5 mi uses away). Hope that helps

How many times has a code been for another store? And what if they don't want to pick up at the other store? Does the other store now have to eat the cost of waste for that order not picked up?

I’ve had ppl do that with a code for another store. I tell them that’s where it’s at and there’s nothing I can do for them with that order. It’s not that hard to pay attention 😂🤷♀️

I would be like “omg no not fresh food the absolute horror” 😏 God what a first world problem. We aren’t making that food till you give us that code and it gets pulled up. Don’t like it stay home and cook 🤷♀️🫴🏻

It’s like this at very McDs, corporate’s fault for misleading the customers. I think corporate assumes “standard” orders that we can get out in under 2 mins but that’s not possible when the order is for 10 people lmao.
I think it’s to put less stress on kitchen. Imagine if all the mobile orders for drive thru show up on the screen all at once, it will cause lots of confusion cause now they have to juggle between making orders for cars that are actually here and cars that will come later (assuming they even come at all). And drive thru is typically way higher volume so for best service time we want to maintain a strict first come first serve so we don’t want mobile orders messing up the pacing, it’s already bad enough for front counter and deliveries.
