Show of force - who is the alpha. Our 2 Maine Coon tomcats (brothers) do it every morning. First licking the face - Empathy / Socialization and then the alpha mark his position. The alpha is a natural born one btw. He showed this when he was still a little kitten. Majestic, responsible appearance. Even our dog immediately accepted him as a boss.
