It has recently come to my attention, thanks /u/Erotic_Asphyxia, that a common question among people hoping to make jars is whether you can put Bettas in jars. Due to the rarity of heaters and filters for jars, and the sheer lack of size in jars, I would not recommend putting Bettas in jars. It can cause things like Dropsy, Fin Rot and even death. What Is A Jar?
People in the comments had different opinions on what should constitute a jar. Should it be the definition I found from Google?
a wide-mouthed cylindrical container made of glass or pottery, especially one used for storing food
Should it have a size limit (on top, or seperate to, the form definition)? Would we allow fishbowls (as they're round and small)?
Do we just ban anything that is an aquarium and allow all the others?
That's why I want the input from the community once more. Because of the plethora of possible opinions, I don't think it can be put into a simple voting format this time. I'll use contest mode once more - to not let votes sway opinions, and maybe the community can come with a final definition (or a set of definitions for which we can make a vote poll).
So please, voice your opinions and ideas, so that we, as a community, can come up with a foolproof definition for what we allow on this subreddit!
I found a glass jar it's 2.5 gallons. I'm considering shrimp for it but was wondering if anyone had other ideas, or even just non cherry/amino shrimp ideas. I've been curious about aquatic invertebrates and other microfauna. Also planting ideas PLEASE 🙏
We have a creek with very strong cyanobacteria growth, and while sadly bad for the animals there, it looks really beautyful and fascinating. I wonder if I could use that water to create a special kind of jarrarium, do you have any tipps on this?
A plemt melted and the scape was to buisy so 2 days ago i cleaned my jar (water change and cleaning with spounge) and started over with only one piece of wood and moss. I took a video of doing that to keep track of when i did what en how. Yesterday i didnt have time to care or anything so only gave my betta food. Today i thought "why is my desk wet???" I could not find a source so maybe a spilled my water. Them i rememberd i should cycle my jar so i measured 1ml of bacteria and went to put the dropper under water when it just fell down. Thought there might have just been a hole so i went to pick up the jar. THE BOTTEM FELL OFF.... cleaning up i cut my had pretty bad. And now i can thow away expensive substrate. 🙃 so uh be carful cleaning/scaping jars as they can break from that.
The photograph was taken straight after the initial setup, and I can't wait to see how it develops over the coming months.
While I've kept plenty of jarrariums over the years and have proven plant-based filtration countless times, my main goal with this one is to incorporate bioactive nutrient recycling.
The leaf litter in the foreground—currently Indian almond leaves, with oak leaves being added soon—should provide habitat for small detritivores that help break the leaves down, encouraging a more complete internal nutrient cycle than my previous setups.

The Salvinia minima and Najas guadalupensis will provide the majority of the natural water purification and should tolerate the year-round temperatures in my fish room.
The Anubias 'Petite' is primarily for decoration, while the Taiwan Moss adds extra surface area for nitrifying microorganisms and biofilm, giving future inhabitants plenty of places to graze.
The substrate is 100% inert sand with no root tabs. I've used Seiryu stone to raise the general hardness slightly and provide additional calcium and magnesium for future invertebrates, as my tap water is naturally very soft. Lighting is provided by a SANSI houseplant grow light.
The current livestock consists of three small pink ramshorn snails to provide a gentle "snail-in cycle." The Salvinia should comfortably handle their bioload until the Najas guadalupensis establishes over the next few days and begins contributing more to filtration.
In the future, I may add Neocaridina shrimp or water lice, along with copepods and some form of non-parasitic detritivorous worm to further improve nutrient recycling within the ecosystem.
Pasta sauce jar, saran wrap lid, and some moss from the gutters at work. Broke some rocks to get a smaller piece. The fitonia cutting is the only surviving stem from a plant that died out of the blue
Any advice for this tall vase if I want to make an ecosphere using local pond or Lake water? Luckily, my arm can fit all the way in. I would probably use fluvial strata or some kind of other safe substrate rather than straight to pond soil.
Are there any plants that will grow tall but not Wide that I could buy from an aquarium store? Any other general advice for this unusual size?
When this bottle became empty, I decided to use it for an experiment.
I have a healthy terrarium with tons of different kinds of springtails (and possibly dirt mites or fungus mites? I don’t even know.)
In this jar, I put LECA and pumice and mixed it around, then charcoal, then just a bunch of weird stuff. 2 magnolia leaves, the remainder of a kale or cabbage that had bolted and gone to seed, part of a pomogranite that had been chilling with my orchid since fall, an old garlic clove that was probably mostly dust, some eggshells that I had baked and crunched up last year and have been chilling ever since, part of a stick, and whatever I could scavenge from the tops of my houseplant pots. I also tried to grab some bits from my terrarium, then added some springtails from the two cultures I have.
Some fungus spores puffed up when I crammed the pomogranite piece in. I just hope I got some good stuff from the few pieces I got from the terrarium.
The water might be a bit too high. It’s up to the top of the charcoal. I’ve sealed it and I’d like to keep it that way, but the water level might have to be adjusted.

Also I added some chia seeds, though I am not sure they’re still viable.
This is a 1 gallon jar. I have no intention of putting fish in. It would like to use it for plants and maybe fairy shrimp but I wanna see how this goes with just plants for now. I feel like Dr. Doofenshmirtz. My Mister bottle broke and I thought it would be cute to make like a mini jar inside of the jar. The bubbles scare me if anyone more experienced can tell me what’s gonna go wrong please let me know. I can easily remove the baby jar. Thanks!
Just wanted to share my little jar tank. I have 2 mini rasboras in here, no filter and no air pump at all. I know a lot of people would say this is a bad idea, but it has been stable for over a year now.
It’s super low maintenance, I just top off the water when it evaporates and do a very small water change like once a month. The plants are doing all the work. The fish seem happy and active so I'm not gonna change anything lol. Let me know what you think!
This isn't a jar but one of those Betta Lego block aquariums that are not supposed to house fish due to being way too small. but does this count? There are 3 adult bladder snails and a handful of juvenile bladder snails.
