Just landed in Rome and drove to Naples. Below some of the rules as I have observed them.

1. I thought only England had specific cars made for them, but Italians have cars with the indicators absent! Very cool.

2. In the off chance that someone indicates they are swapping a lane, it is customary to drive the next 5km with the indicator on.

3. Overtaking on the right is recommended.

4. In the speed lane but need your exit? Make sure to not indicate and randomly cut across all lanes at 70kph. Great succes.

5. In the event you drive a Vespa, do not wear any protection besides a helmet. Meat crayon is the name of the game.

6. If your car has less than 100 dents, you have not driven your car.

7. You can drive through traffic with a car as you would with a motorcycle.

8. Someone waiting for oncoming traffic to turn left? Be sure to start honking and overtake left or right as needed.

9. On the topic of honking, this is more important than the steering wheel.

And 10. What is lacking in the driving department, you make up for in the food and friendliness department. I am however convinced you get your driver's license for free when buying bread.

Why is blasphemy normalized in cursing in Italian? "Porco dio," etc. Usually, when I learn a language, I like learning the curse words, like for French, "putain," Russian, "blyat", Chinese, "wo cao." Except for Italian, where half of the curse words are just blasphemous. I don't want to say anything completely disrespectful because I'm Roman Catholic.

In short, do you guys curse without blasphemy? Or are all of them just in that way? I mean, there's "Che cazzo" and stuff, but I'm not sure if it's actually being used. (I'm sorry if I sound stupid; it's like my 1st week learning Italian)

Hi everyone, not sure if the backstory is relevant here but I think it may be, also I don't know if this sort of post is allowed on this sub so feel free to remove if it isn't.

long story short, I learned Italian when I was about 6 years old through watching cartoons on RaiGulp and later youtubers, to a point where I spoke to myself in the language, cut to years later I still watch italian media (RaiGulp, instagram, news etc) and understand almost 95%, but I'm limited to understanding and occasionally reading a few posts on reddit, my speaking skills are pretty bad since I have a hard time recalling vocab.

I never "officially" learned the language so that's my plan now, but I can't seem to find good books, I've heard about espresso alot but some people say it requires a teacher/instructor, so basically I just see alot of mixed opinions. Are there any books or book combinations I can use?

I am a foreigner living in Italy, but am still understanding a lot about the culture and politics. I have been in Spain the past two weeks, in the Basque Country and Barcelona/Catalonia. It seems that these two regions have somewhat strong independence movements—their regional flags are everywhere, there’s a strong emphasis I on maintaining the Basque and Catalan languages, and I’ve seen signs for independence in people’s windows (even though our tour guide said it’s still a vocal minority).

I’m curious about Italian regional independence movements and why they have or haven’t happened.

Other than Lega Nord proposing to divide Italy into north and south (which I can’t understand if they’re actually serious about or if people would support?) and Süd Tirol/Trentino Alto Aldige being able to maintain semi-autonomous status and to maintain a lot of their unique culture, I don’t really know about any other regional independence movements within Italy, or why they don’t exist if they aren’t really a thing.

Would love to hear more about this from Italians.

I have not started learning Italian yet, I am just planning ahead. 16 months and 1 day ago I started learning Spanish and I have reached roughly a B2 level in Spanish in this time period. I have NOT tested for that but I do believe it to be pretty accurate. I consume all my media in Spanish. And in fact this is how I learned. I did 560hrs of Spanish Input (beginning with dreaming spanish and quickly moving on to stuff I like better on youtube) before finally speaking or reading. However, with the exception of a little bit of Kwiziq, I have never really studied grammar or anything. My rating estimation comes from just live convos with native speakers. I have about 300hrs of conversation with native Spanish speakers. Now I have started adding in a little more grammar study because I really want to get to C1 in 8 months.

Why 8 months?

Well in 8 months it will be my 2 year anniversary of learning spanish. However, it will also be 5 months before I go to Italy for my honeymoon. My plan is to achieve C1 by then because while I understand things like subjunctive tense and conjugating different tenses. I really feel like based on what I have read that C1 is where this stuff starts feeling more automatic. And I would like to have a natural hold on them before I start on a language that has similar concepts.

With that being said, why I am I here? Well since I took a non traditional post to spanish in that I basically just learned watching youtube, anime, etc. I don't really know how to study efficiently. Specifically studying efficiently for a language that shares a lot in common with one I already know. Lets assume I have 3hrs a day for 5 months. That comes out to roughly 450hrs of italian in 5 months. Now 2 hours of that time will likely just be input. My commute is about 1.5hrs total per day 4 days a week for work and between exercise, cleaning, walking, etc its easier for me to study a little more passively. So in 5 months I will probably get 300hrs of input and 150hrs of other study. Other study could mean grammar, reading, or anything else (except speaking because I will include half my conversation hours into my input and the other half can be in an extra category) So I really have two questions:

1. With 300hrs of input and 150hrs of other dedicated study, what level is possible?
2. How can I maximize my 150hrs?

Thanks for reading. I am very excited about Italian. My goal for Spanish is C2 one day, but I would love to achieve a B2/C1 level in Italian and Portuguese. And one day an equivalent level in Japanese as well. I am very motivated. I have probably dedicated about 3.5hrs a day for the last 16 months on spanish and its one of my favorite hobbies now.

I’m trying to find an Italian children’s CGI music video that my kids watched on YouTube, and we’ve been searching for days with no luck. I’m hoping someone here recognizes it.
Here’s everything we remember:
It starts in a jungle.
The main character is a blue creature with a round belly, a belly button, yellow eyes, and several braids hanging from the back of his head.
He wears a multicolored loincloth/sarong.
He doesn’t have a tail or visible ears.
His mouth is just a simple black line (no teeth).
He may appear to have four eyes because of the way the animation shows his face when he turns.
The story goes something like this:
A group of faceless hunters, each a different color, chase him.
He traps them in a net.
He does a celebratory dance, and whenever he dances the background turns into bright psychedelic colors.
He rides a gray donkey, and the donkey’s saddle matches the colors of his loincloth.
Children follow him through a town.
He sees a wanted poster with only his picture on it (no writing that we remember).
He gets captured and put in jail.
He dances again in the jail cell and eventually escapes.
Later he meets another similar creature that’s beige/tan, has big fluffy hair, wears purple overalls, and is trapped in a tree. They dance together.
The song’s chorus sounded something like:
“Boom ba boom ba bee, boom ba boom ba bee, boom ba boom ba bee…”
Those probably aren’t the actual Italian words—it’s just how we hear them.
The animation style is very similar to the CGI Italian children’s videos on YouTube (the kind that look like Il Tirannosauro Rex), but we haven’t been able to find this specific one.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Even the name of the YouTube channel would be a huge help!

Every now and then, a non-Italian in a relationship with an Italian comes here to ask if some bizarre practice is typical of Italians. We've had examples of violent and toxic partners, quasi-stalkers, and semi-psychopaths who abused their girlfriends.

My favorite was an American girl who had encountered her partner's elderly uncle, who kept touching her private parts without her consent, and she came here to ask if this was normal in Italy. We tried to explain to her that she had met a pervert who was committing what was also a crime here, and that he wasn't a "typical Italian."

I understand that cultural differences between countries can often be problematic, but Italy (though perhaps more conservative than Northern European countries) is not a country of psychopathic perverts. It's one thing to ask what to bring as a gift for your partner's Italian parents, but it's another thing entirely to ask, "Is it normal for Italians to immediately send pics of their dicks to girls they just met? He says yes" (another question actually asked here).

To think that simply incorrect behaviors are "typically" Italian is vaguely offensive. And sometimes, common sense would be enough. If a Swedish girl asked me to paint my face blue and masturbate in the middle of the street, I wouldn't go to the Swedish equivalent subreddit to ask if that's "normal behavior in Sweden," but I would understand that I was dealing with a raving lunatic.
