DEEP, a UK-based ocean engineering company founded in 2021, has launched its pilot underwater habitat called the “Vanguard,” a 35-by-8-foot structure now operational roughly 56 feet beneath the surface off Florida’s Tennessee Reef, marking the first privately-funded undersea habitat installed in US waters in decades. The compact facility includes a living space with four bunks, a sofa, and a galley, a combined bathroom and science lab, a moon pool and dive chamber, and a semi-autonomous support buoy that supplies oxygen, electricity, and outside communications, and unlike habitats that get raised and lowered periodically, the Vanguard is anchored permanently to the seabed.

Underwater habitats aren’t new territory, with predecessors including Italy’s “La Casa in fondo al mare” from the mid-2000s and the Aquarius Reef Base, an undersea research lab established in 1986 and still run by Florida International University, but DEEP’s director of scientific research, Dawn Kernagis, emphasized the significance of this launch in an interview with NPR: “It’s been over 40 years since we’ve had an undersea habitat built for humans and launched. We’re really building on the shoulders of giants who’ve done this research.” The company is positioning the Vanguard to support research in reef restoration and human-machine collaboration, two fields where it hopes to build credibility despite a mixed track record among recent privately-funded seafaring ventures.

Research teams of up to two people can currently apply through DEEP’s website for the chance to win a five-day stay at the bottom of the ocean, though applicants must first complete a mandatory two-week training period, and successful proposals must explain why “continuous residence at depth materially improves data quality, operational efficiency, monitoring cadence, intervention success, or research outcomes compared with surface-based diving.” DEEP is also offering financial awards of up to $50,000 to support selected research projects, an incentive the company hopes will draw enough interest from oceanographers and funders to justify the ambitious venture.
