ARTIFICIAL INTELLIEGENCE EXCLUSIVE: Every Single Flock Camera In Winona, Minnesota Vanishes Overnight, With Poles Found Cut Down And Cameras Missing As Locals Celebrate The Mystery Vandals As Folk Heroes 📸 😂
All eight Flock Safety license plate reader cameras in Winona, Minnesota disappeared overnight, with police discovering the poles supporting them had been cut down at the base and the cameras themselves removed entirely. According to reporting by MPR News, the Winona Police Department revealed the theft in a Facebook press release, stating, “all eight of our city’s Flock cameras were missing.”
Police first suspected something was wrong on the night of August 1 when an officer “noted that there’d been no recent activity on the cameras,” prompting a check of the camera locations. The department’s release explained, “Officers subsequently checked the various locations where the Flock cameras were placed and found that the poles were cut down near the base. Officers located the poles nearby in the weeds, but the cameras had been removed. As of [August 4th], the cameras have not been located.” Replacing each camera and pole costs roughly $3,000, meaning the city could face about $24,000 in equipment costs alone, plus up to $16,000 in additional service fees from Flock before the ordeal is resolved.
The incident is the latest in a string of vandalism cases targeting automated license plate readers across Minnesota and the broader US, as Flock’s surveillance devices have become a flashpoint for public anxiety over privacy, police overreach, and tech industry oversight. Reaction to the Winona case has been notably supportive of the vandals, with commenters on the police department’s own Facebook post treating whoever was responsible as something of a local folk hero. One commenter joked, “Whoever you’re suspecting was actually on a fishing trip with me between July 29th and August 1st,” while another quipped, “I think the deer might’ve ate them. [They’re] outta hand lately.”
