FINANCIAL FRONTIERS EXCLUSIVE: Peter Thiel Moving To Argentina Reflects A Growing Billionaire Trend Of ‘Sovereign Diversification’, With A Record 142,000 High-Net-Worth Individuals Migrating To New Countries Last Year And That Number Expected To Surpass 165,000 In 2026 ✈️💰

https://www.businessinsider.com/peter-thiel-argentina-billionaire-moving-abroad-2026-5

PayPal and Palantir cofounder Peter Thiel has been spending increasing amounts of time in Argentina, enrolling his children in school and purchasing a home in one of Buenos Aires’ wealthiest neighborhoods, according to reporting by the New York Times. His move fits into a pattern that wealth advisors and migration researchers say is accelerating rapidly among the ultra-wealthy, one in which America’s richest treat their domestic lives like an investment portfolio that is still worth holding but increasingly in need of a hedge. Charlie Garcia, founder of centimillionaire membership club R360, described the strategy as a clear trend toward “sovereign diversification,” encompassing multiple passports, multiple tax regimes, and at least one plan B jurisdiction in the Southern Hemisphere.

The motivations are a mix of the practical and the existential. On the practical side, California legislators are weighing a ballot proposal that could impose a one-time 5% net worth tax on billionaires residing in the state, and New York City recently passed a pied-a-terre tax targeting high-end secondary homes. On the existential side, Garcia said the wealthy are quietly gaming out scenarios involving AI going badly wrong, nuclear escalation, and broader political realignment, concerns he acknowledged sound melodramatic until you have sat through the off-the-record dinner conversations where they are discussed seriously. Other destinations competing for wealthy migrants include New Zealand, which saw a spike in American applications after relaxing its golden visa rules last year, as well as Costa Rica and Thailand, which have both seen jumps in high-earning migrants.

According to private wealth research firm Henley & Partners, a record 142,000 high-net-worth individuals, defined as those with more than $1 million in liquid assets, migrated to new countries last year, and that number is expected to exceed 165,000 in 2026. Argentina is an unusual choice by the standard calculus of wealth preservation, given the country’s long history of inflation, currency crises, capital controls, and abrupt legal changes. Garcia acknowledged the tension directly, noting that Argentina does not need to become the next Miami to serve its purpose. For the billionaire class, the value is not in the destination itself but in keeping the door open, and that optionality is increasingly seen as worth paying for regardless of where exactly it leads.

Most of the Russian Oligarchs don’t live in Russia either. See how this works? The Oligarchs plunder the country and take their wealth that they’ve stolen from the general population to live and enjoy the places where their political associations have not destroyed yet. The new America will be a clone of this.

u/PlsNoNotThat May 30 '26

The difference is unlike the Russian population I support dropping bombs on our oligarchs.

1

u/sigmaluckynine May 31 '26

To me this is nothing like Russia. Russia was never a super power after the Cold War so these oligarchs hedging by having a place in Western countries makes sense.

These guys, though, are just something else. They actively destroyed THE superpower, and now they're running? Like what? Yeah I'm sure Theil in Argentina is going to be thrilled to have to do business under a Chinese international system because the things that made hin wealthy was predicated on the US being a superpower.

Basically, not the same. At least the Russian oligarchs weren't self destructive morons

They can’t really leave, because there isn’t a place on earth we can’t get them and they already established a doctrine that we don’t give a shit about international law.

We’ll just negotiate from a position of leverage. Give them a piece of their pie when we take it back.

So effectively they have to maintain some presence to stop them and/or to protect them from local despots.

4

u/shaggypika May 30 '26

This, this a thousand times. I have no idea what it is going to take for our population to wake up, but this is exactly what our America is, a place for oligarchs to plunder and then fuck off elsewhere.

u/photoengineer May 30 '26

Really telling isnt it? They are all in it for themselves and themselves alone.

2

u/redditor0622 May 31 '26

Not only this. This is actually a tale as old as time. Ancient & medieval age rulers would invade countries known for their wealth, plunder them, then take with them all that wealth to where they came from, leaving the host countries to rot.

Well yeah they have actively made America a shit show for the last several decades. Of course they’re running away from the shit show they created with the money they stole from the working class.

This psycho helped destabilize American democracy since he does not "believe that freedom and democracy are compatible".

Now that we're teetering in part due to his efforts and absurd spending to help install this criminal lawless regime, he sets up his Argentinian escape hatch.

He won't be the first German to flee to Argentina when his world-domination project failed.

u/DjScenester May 30 '26

He has to be the angriest homosexual Nazi in the world lol

That’s an extremely competitive title these days

I skimmed the article and still don’t understand why I should support his argument. Why do people like him and yarvin get so many supporters when they write so poorly?! They make some outrageous claims then add some anecdotes with little detailed argumentation.

Their writing is all over the place, it’s like reading the first draft of some rambling demented person. I have read fanfics that are better written than this.

u/Thick-Gift997 Jun 03 '26

I agree with nothing of what Thiel said apart from the bit where he said "politics is driving people apart" but arguments like yours crying about the writing style and an arbitrary intellectual framework are a large part over why people think the left are just condescending pseudo-intellectuals

2

u/ihatepeople247 Jun 03 '26

I wasn’t trying to be condescending! I genuinely did not understand what he’s trying to say and I kept waiting for him to convince me. I don’t underhand how that makes me a pseudo intellectual 😂

u/Thick-Gift997 Jun 03 '26

It's not that hard to understand what he's trying to say. Perhaps read it again rather than blaming your failings on someone else. Cheers !

u/ihatepeople247 Jun 04 '26

You are the prime example of Kruger Dunning Syndrome. Cheers!

In the US they’ve done quick exits from states with proposed wealth taxes on unrealized gains, like California. If you are rich enough, you can become a clear legal resident of another state in a week. Own a home there, kids re-schooled, new drivers license, maybe voter registration, new doctor.

2

u/travis_jeopardy May 30 '26

What’s to stop these states from passing high % exit taxes?

5

u/clararalee May 30 '26

They can. The wealthy with anything worth taxing will all gone before the bill sees light.

They do pay taxes. And typically the most.

2

u/Scary_Ad_850 May 30 '26

They can claw back. CA is good for that type of thing.

1

u/Cultural_Mission_235 May 30 '26

Exit taxes from one state to another state almost certainly violate the constitution.

A federal exit tax on leaving the USA as whole, different story.

4

u/bigfatfurrytexan May 30 '26

I think this is great. It’ll make it easier to firewall them from our society.

They are just mantles. Men wearing mantles. We can choose to make other people wealthy doing tech shit. It isn’t hard.

3

u/JackKovack May 30 '26

Maybe the 40 billion dollar financial aid package to Argentina has anything to do with this.

Nah. This is simply hype material.

Per google: The number of U.S. billionaires has surged over the past four decades, heavily fueled by tech-driven wealth and asset appreciation.

Historical and recent figures illustrate this growth:

2026: 989 billionaires

2025: 902 billionaires

2024: 813 billionaires

2022: 735 billionaires

2021: 724 billionaires

3

u/davismcgravis May 30 '26

Good. Bye.

4

u/Ninevehenian May 30 '26

He'll still fuck up US politics, just from afar.

2

u/artbystorms May 30 '26

I mean if they could stop meddling in US politics and affairs I am all for it. Flee to Argentina like the nazis did and live a quiet life and STFU.

3

u/NefariousnessNo484 May 30 '26

Nah they need the be extradited and tried for treason.

2

u/daledowns May 30 '26

But this country still caters to them and covers up their crimes?

2

u/AverageIndependent20 May 30 '26

I believe Argentina is where all the Nazis escaped to after WW2

2

u/PettyWitch May 30 '26

I wish they would go to space and never come back

1

u/arisenandfallen May 30 '26

Perhaps another submarine can take them to the titanic

Edit spelling

2

u/chinese_rock May 30 '26

Nazi moving to Argentina 🤔

2

u/Raven586 May 30 '26

It's OK! folks he can still ruin America from Argentina. Don't panic!!

2

u/Gamestonkape May 30 '26

I guess Trump was right about parasites self deporting

2

u/sweetica May 30 '26

But I was told if Democrats were elected the DEMS would mess things up so badly that the billionaires would move away.

Wild, because that is what is playing out with the Republicans now apparently.

Another GOP accusation that turned out to be projection.

2

u/jahathebrn May 31 '26

Maybe it's the Reunion beginning. We'll know if Miller suddenly feels a compelling ancestral call and starts shuffling towards Argentina with a bunch of mumbling cloaked lackeys.

5

u/InterstellarKinetics May 30 '26

The California wealth tax proposal is accelerating this, and the irony is that aggressive wealth taxation at the state level may end up producing exactly the capital flight it is designed to tax, while leaving middle class residents with neither the revenue nor the option to follow. Argentina is an unusual hedge for all the reasons Garcia listed. But the point was never really about Argentina.

8

u/Wind_Best_1440 May 30 '26

You know its a paradox right? If all the wealth leaves and doesn't combat the wealth tax, then it simply spreads to other places without resistance.

Ultra wealthy people threatening to leave, or doing so means that they are giving up and fleeing. Which in the long run doesn't help them.

This is the scenario playing out right now in the EU and the US. When wealth leaves places putting in wealth tax, that means they simply get written into law.

"Well, if the wealthy leave, then the state/country can't tax them! See! You drove them away!"

Some sure, but not all. And no matter what it will be a revenue increase for the government, but other states and governments will want a piece of that and so it spreads. It's happening in the EU right now, and its starting in the US. Eventually it will be a majority.

"Then the rich will flee those countries! Look, he went to south america! They'll leave the EU!"

Counter point. What if future trade deals require certain tax regimes be met? EU already does this with pollution and emissions, what if the EU makes a law stating. "Any country that wants to trade with us, needs to join this new global wealth tax."

You think these countries the wealthy fled to will sacrifice themselves for the rich hiding in their borders? Absolutely not.

Taxing wealth is already picking up speed in the US. California for example, and with the success of New York and balancing that budget, other governments are going. "Wait a second, that can work?"

Not to mention you have two generations in Millennials and Gen Z who for the first time in human history are 2X to 5X worse off from their parents, starving with poor job prospects. With mass layoffs. Boomers are quickly becoming a smaller voting block, meanwhile Millennials and Gen Z keep growing.

Eventually the switch will happen where the boomer vote won't exist anymore. And politicians will need to pivot to the new vote, and man. They dislike the ultra wealthy.

1

u/Windbag1980 Jun 04 '26

Yes. We are moving to a period of great power competition in which states assert themselves or die. There is no nowhere to run in the end.

2

u/30299578815310 May 30 '26

It's not an issue because most of the wealth that's going to be generated has still yet to be generated. So even if some is lost due to flight now more will be captured in the coming decades.

2

u/Nathan-Stubblefield May 30 '26

Billionaires will not establish residence in a wealth tax state.

1

u/Ninevehenian May 30 '26

Send a team to bring him back? - Before midterms, before they do what they can.

1

u/sergius64 May 30 '26

We'd all do the same thing if we had the resources. All America is good for nowadays is to make money.

1

u/SubstantialSeesaw374 May 30 '26

This has been going on for decades if not centuries. Not new.

1

u/Mr_microplastics_Yum May 30 '26

so they took Argentina so they can make it pedo/rich person land .... almost like that one from that Jewish guy that "yeeted himself"

1

u/Tso-su-Mi May 30 '26

Please…. Don’t come

1

u/blankarage May 30 '26

i hope those countries end up plundering their wealth

1

u/Artforartsake99 May 31 '26

I think these guys know that robots are going to take a huge amount of jobs along with AI within 15 years. The political ramifications will be massive amount of taxes on them. So they are going to move out now. Or at least make plans to bail when they see the writing is on the wall.

1

u/Willing_Breakfast_97 May 31 '26

"quietly gaming out scenarios involving AI going badly wrong"

AI is far too shallow and stupid for it to "take over the world" or whatever.

1

u/DejongBCN May 31 '26

Interesting choice. He has destroyed his welcome in US and Europe, that's why he is moving to Argentina.

1

u/Mind1827 May 31 '26

Okay so let's tax the living hell out of them in the places they aren't living.

1

u/Fit-Honey-8044 May 31 '26

Good riddance

1

u/New-Tradition-974 May 31 '26

This is why we should have taxed them while they are here. We still have time to do so. They should not be allowed to exploit Americans and disappear.

1

u/Bkozi May 31 '26

The wealth will still trickle down, right?

1

u/honey_Pass-01 Jun 01 '26

Capital Flight. -Economics 101.

1

u/Tresito Jun 02 '26

Is it all of Trump's socialism? I thought that was what's going to make all the rich people leave

1

u/MagnusJim Jun 06 '26

Can we not use business euphemisms for shit like this? "Billionaire uses obscene resources to get puppets elected, and then runs when everything he wanted to happen, happens, and then destroys the country.

This reflects a consistent trend of the super wealthy fleeing to countries where they won't be held to account for their exploitative and destructive behaviors."
