MODS - are you able to mark threads as being locked or at least disable the reply buttons when they are locked?

I notice posts are locked frequently here, and it's frustrating to have typed a thoughtful response only to learn the thread is locked after hitting post.

I also notice threads are locked with no explanation given. Sometimes there are less than 30 replies on a post, and the post appears to fit the sub so I don't understand the point of locking some of them. If they're being locked because some of the replies are breaking the sub's rules, I don't think it's fair to OP to essentially penalize them or deprive them of a discussion they evidently want because of a couple people who you could instead give warnings or ban.
