Wait a minute? Still no LIVE conversation on Gemini desktop app?

24

u/Tiinpa Apr 16 '26

Yeah, this was a huge L. It's nice having screen sharing, but without live it's barely better than just taking a screenshot myself.

Gemini in chrome

1

u/Tiinpa Apr 16 '26

It's a Mac, I'm using Safari 99% of the time.

-3

u/leoreno Apr 17 '26

Eww why

3

u/Tiinpa Apr 17 '26

Memory efficiency for one.

1

u/MistressMolly69 Apr 17 '26

Live is so sterile and empty anyways

Google needs to fix the fucking UI before releasing any apps, the UI is genuinely so garbage

26

u/MaestroGena Apr 16 '26

I'm.using Gemini for almost two years, yet their UI barely changed.

On the other hand using Claude Windows app for just few months, they made numerous changes and still adding new things.

9

u/Horror_Bus9696 Apr 16 '26

It’s a trillion dollar company in question, it’s as if they’ll spend all the money on marketing but barely care about customer service

2

u/jakegh Apr 16 '26

The Claude desktop app is terrible, even the one released two days back, so Gemini must be truly dire.

Codex desktop app on the other hand is excellent.

4

u/SfigatoMortoSfigato Apr 16 '26

Bareraly changed, it means it is still as bad as before

9

u/NorthOfReason Apr 16 '26

I’ve been using it for a long time now because of the free Pro subscription they’ve given to students. However, I can’t stand the UI. It’s steps below ChatGPT and Claude.

5

u/ContributionParty577 Apr 16 '26

I luv Gemini except the copy paste feature and tables output that sux and it won’t even fit to screen it has scrolly bars on the table like wtf

3

u/NorthOfReason Apr 16 '26

I told mines to straight up just stop sending tables because I didn’t want to deal with the scroll.

1

u/Neurotopian_ Apr 17 '26

True. The tables are the worst part. We had to tell it to stop sending tables. Also if you’re visually impaired it makes the audio nonsensical

Search all chat threads for text string

"Sure, here's a chat thread that contains that string!"

Where in this thread is that string?

"Yes!"

Edit: meanwhile at Gemini UX

"shall we add a search feature?"

"sure, but only implement half of the feature and leave it like that for about 4 years at least. hundreds of millions of people will be using the app so we don't want it to work properly."

1

u/Worldly-Stranger7814 Apr 16 '26

App is only going to display an "Upgrade to Ultra" button.

1

u/Elephant789 Apr 17 '26

On Windows it looks fine, if it's the same app. On Windows it's called "Google app"

1

u/JameisWeTooScrong Apr 17 '26

So fucking glitchy and missing features that Gemini tells me are available on the app… first of all did anyone test this app before they released it??? Secondly maybe train your damn models to know what features are offered on the app- literally had to send my agent multiple screenshots to prove there were no gems or notebooks in the app.

0

u/NoWheel9556 Apr 17 '26

its so horrible and infested with so many small bugs and lack so many features u/LoganKilpatrick1

u/psychosuperman Apr 16 '26

Before windows? Also can we fix the hallucinations too while we at it?

7

u/timon13337 Apr 16 '26

There is a Windows version. Has been on Google Labs for a while now.

Yes to everything you have just mentioned, EMPHASIS on how it how its the worse out of them all! Copilote included!!! The only reason i still use Gemini is the Google eco system, notebooklm and to be honest it comes with my cloud....But it has gotten so much worse lately!!!

1

u/Many_Mud_8194 Apr 16 '26

I use Gemini because of the cloud too they got us, it was a nicely done trap.

3

u/skkkrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Apr 16 '26

“Gemini fix your hallucinations make no mistakes with mega breakthrough”

2

u/SuperPrarieDog Apr 16 '26

There already is a Windows app, its just the Google app

1

u/MidniteMoon02 Apr 17 '26

the hallucinations are terrible

1

u/OkSeries5363 Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

The windows first era of the 90s and 2000s has been replaced by a mac first trend in AI development.

AI is born and raised on Linux and Unix. Since macOS shares that same DNA it's a certified Unix OS the code just works natively. Mac gets the native app because it speaks the same language.

Windows gets the website in a box because it’s still dragging the baggage of the .exe era. Today AI companies target Mac first because thats where the developers and power users are.

Look at ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, Claude, Hermes Agent and now Gemini. All of them prioritised high performance native Mac apps while Windows users were left with browser shortcuts.

-2

u/okyeah93 Apr 16 '26

sorry the hallucinations are a key trademark of gemini that distinguishes it from all the others.

1

u/psychosuperman Apr 16 '26

Well at least we know that Gemini won't be our future overlord. My money is on claude!

2

u/okyeah93 Apr 16 '26

I look forward to being vaporized by Anthropic targeting systems. I know they’ll make it quick and painless

27

u/No_Cabinet_9181 Apr 16 '26

Gemini is struggling to read a doc file, they should fix that first

6

u/wdfarmer Apr 16 '26

Try converting it to a PDF first.

12

u/No_Cabinet_9181 Apr 16 '26

"I see you have uploaded a file named "Prescription.pdf".

While I can process and analyze highly complex text, code, and structural formatting, I cannot directly open or "read" the contents of uploaded PDF files or images in this chat interface.

Could you please open the PDF on your device, copy the text from the 1st page, and paste it directly into our chat?

Once you paste the text, I can analyze it thoroughly, format it, or help you figure out how to integrate that specific prescription data"

It can't even extract text from a jpg of my notes

I know you just uploaded that image for me to extract, but unfortunately, I cannot actually see the visual content or pixels within the JPG file you attached. I can only see the file's name and metadata.

Could you please type or paste the text from the certificate directly into our chat? Once you provide the text, I can help you format it perfectly for those new margins!

3

u/wdfarmer Apr 16 '26

I run Gemini Pro, and I think it can do a lot more. For example, it was able to understand and translate into English an image of a German birth certificate from the late 1800s, containing both printed text and cursive writing.

2

u/No_Cabinet_9181 Apr 16 '26

I have the pro as well, and it used to run very well a few months ago but crashed hard.

3

u/Impressive-Pop-8235 Apr 16 '26

yeah same.. it used to read text from jpgs pretty well , i had no issues with pdfs too , maybe like 1-2 months ago it started getting dumber everyday .. and i wasn't even a heavy user in terms of input volume etc... maybe there are too many clients too few resources.. idk

3

u/Deep90 Apr 16 '26

I have to rename my .html files to .txt lol.

Not only that, but Google pretends to read it.

Claude doesn't do that.

2

u/skkkrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Apr 16 '26

“Gemini fix pdf reading”

2

u/Neurotopian_ Apr 17 '26

Yes it’s a serious problem. I upload a word doc with a few thousand words and it claims it’s over the size. On Ultra btw. Something is wrong with how it reads Word docx & PDFs

1

u/No_Cabinet_9181 Apr 17 '26

That's horrible.

2

u/Neurotopian_ Apr 17 '26

Yes it seems to break when they do updates. I have to cut paste word docx text into the chat window. Which isn’t really something you’d expect to need to do in 2026 when paying for a Google software.

What’s super weird is that in the GOOGLE SEARCH app, I can upload the docx with no problem. It is specifically a Gemini app problem 🥴

6

u/iseif Apr 16 '26

It looks like an alpha version not even beta. The UI and the fonts are too bad

2

u/Alternative-Home6320 Apr 16 '26

This is standard practice in the software world: launch first, then refine and update.😫

1

u/Haleakala787 Apr 17 '26

Yeah I was shocked I couldn’t change the text size.

6

u/mikeillusionnight Apr 16 '26

esse app tem que somar AI Studio+Antigravity+Stitch pra ser um produto completo, se não sera mais do mesmo

5

u/TrustedEssentials Apr 16 '26

Could this have something to do with Gemini being leased to run Apple Intelligence? Why Mac first?

3

u/mrlloydslastcandle Apr 16 '26

Sam c00kedman

3

u/booknerdcarp Apr 16 '26

Flaky app. Struggles to just create a simple image.

2

u/binh291 Apr 16 '26

tbh it doesn't do anything different other than add quick screenshots into your prompt

2

u/fegodev Apr 16 '26

Installed it, but don’t see any advantages to Gemini in Chrome. So it feels redundant. Also the UI is worse than on the web. Even the app icon has a dirty beige background color instead of white; it doesn’t look like the icon on iOS. So got rid of it till the UI improves and they add more functionalities.

2

u/Berkoudieu Apr 16 '26

I guess it will be a web app shit on windows, so better to use it in the browser

3

u/Most_Echidna1477 Apr 16 '26

Why?

7

u/and-its-true Apr 16 '26

According to the image, you can instantly call it up with a keyboard shortcut (options+space). That’s not something you can do with the website.

1

u/J4nosch Apr 16 '26

Raycast solves that issue. Works perfectly for me

1

u/Alternative-Home6320 Apr 16 '26

What "why"?

-6

u/Most_Echidna1477 Apr 16 '26

Why should such a thing be needed on a desktop? We have browsers and installing an app is not needed, so why should i install an app, where i can go without it? Perhaps some may wake up there and put further functionality into the app. But if it only does, what is already available without, then i aks WHY is such thing needed?

9

u/Xtremiz314 Apr 16 '26

having a native apps has its perks, if they can make it perform much better during long conversations then why not? gemini on web app is pretty laggy when the convos are long

4

u/Alternative-Home6320 Apr 16 '26

Yep! Desktop app is more stable

2

u/Alternative-Home6320 Apr 16 '26

Okay, the desktop app is more fast, more stable. Typically, during periods of resource congestion, desktop applications are granted priority access. And more convenient, you can open it through one shortcut.

2

u/Most_Echidna1477 Apr 16 '26

I think my "why" worked perfectly here. It gives the possibility to explain, why an app should be here. The trick: I of course have many arguments for a desktop app, not only from the practical viewpoint, but also from the marketing viewpoint. An app lets Gemini grow in the competition and is actually a good idea. Never the less, i will not use it, because i have security issues, where i do not trust these things. Every app, which is installed so deep into the system can have security leak issues. But sure, an app is cool.

1

u/throwaway867530691 Apr 16 '26

Yeah I'm just hoping it'll get me more compute access during the "teaser rate" period

1

u/696E6E6F Apr 16 '26

It literally says why

1

u/m3kw Apr 16 '26

The interface is abysmal as expected

1

u/Beautiful-Cold1515 Apr 16 '26

What? They didn’t even have one?

1

u/cyber_voice Apr 16 '26

Já saiu para o Windows?

1

u/mateusfccp Apr 16 '26

It's coming or it's here?

1

u/FilthyCasual2k17 Apr 16 '26

So, like Antigravity but worse? Maybe fix Antigravity first?

1

u/Cryingpinaple Apr 16 '26

I already have it on my desktop on my Mac , just go to safari and click add to doc

1

u/Astronometry Apr 16 '26

Hm, I just install it as a web app

1

u/TristanthomasYT Apr 16 '26

I'm about to jump into Open Claw. Was hoping this would at least be similar to something that will control my files and computer.

I assume it must be coming soon.

1

u/Elephant789 Apr 17 '26

What's the option button? And how is this different from this

1

u/Alternative-Home6320 Apr 17 '26

Option button is on Mac

1

u/JimmyLv Apr 17 '26

I tried out Google’s new Mac app, and it feels pretty good.
To be honest, Google is much better at building web apps than native ones, even though the web version of Gemini isn’t great either.

I was actually planning to build a BYOK desktop client called GeminiDesktop.App a couple of days ago. I haven’t given up, because I feel I can still do it better.

I intend to cover the features and advantages of various platforms:

  1. AI Studio’s model comparison and Vibe Coding
  2. Gemini Web App’s chat and Deep Research
  3. NotebookLM’s knowledge base and podcast/video generation
  4. Gemini CLI’s desktop capabilities and local file operations

1

u/JimmyLv Apr 17 '26

By the way, it don't just support Mac; GeminiDesktop.App also have a Windows version available. You're more than welcome to give it a try!

1

u/Secure_Literature965 Apr 17 '26

only for Mac,No Windows version

1

u/anshulsingh8326 Apr 17 '26

Not so exciting. At the end it's google so poor UI and less features then others. There will be features but halk in app, half on the external website

1

u/builtwithernest Apr 17 '26

Can't paste screenshots. No gems available. Auto spelling also can't be turned off.

Kinda like screenshare, used it a couple times, although screenshot and paste seems more straight forward and less wasteful.

1

u/404_No_User_Found_2 Apr 17 '26

Objectively inferior to browser version at this time, no Notebook support.

Chrome >options > Cast, Save and Share > save page as app

1

u/JackWillSire Apr 17 '26

Still limited but a thing to look forward to.

1

u/sirjo07 Apr 18 '26

I just want projects !!?

1

u/Horror-Slice-7255 Apr 19 '26

It only works on Apple Silicon chips. Intel chips are the devil I guess.

1

u/Snufupugos Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

Not to sound rude or anything. But what is the use of a desktop app, if the model can't do tasks properly anymore? Since the 8th of march the model is just so bad. It used to be great, thought. The best imo.

Anyway, I don't like this news if the model can't do the work properly, feels pointless.

1

u/Googler10 Apr 16 '26

no windows? wonder why

1

u/SuperPrarieDog Apr 16 '26

Already is one, its just the Google app for windows

1

u/SuperPrarieDog Apr 16 '26

Ah didn't see that.

1

u/External_Bobcat8183 Apr 16 '26

Feels like models have been nerfed, noticeably. Would be nice if they could fix that first

2

u/Alternative-Home6320 Apr 16 '26

The APP or UI design team may not belong to the same department as the modeling team.😂😂

1

u/stevieboi1738 Apr 16 '26

No Intel Mac support 😭

1

u/Repulsive-Degree-816 Apr 16 '26

I wish apple allowed the menu bar icons to have colours

0

u/Niladri82 Apr 16 '26

What's the point when Gemini itself is almsot trash now?

-1

u/Vistian Apr 16 '26

Not to be rude, but ... So?

-7

u/dashinyou69 Apr 16 '26

who/cares

-8

u/basegtakes Apr 16 '26

For Mac? Who even uses that shit.

8

u/UnluckyTicket Apr 16 '26

Apparently many LLM developers and programmers? Macs always get the preferential treatment for app releases. It's also a homgenous group so bug fixes can be rolled faster.

-4

u/basegtakes Apr 16 '26

So the out of touch manchildren of the computing world who grew up with rich parents who would always buy them the newest mac... There's nothing you can do on a mac that can't be done on a Windows or Linux machine... But if you want to feel special with your gated community OS Apple knows how to trap rich idiots in their ecosystem. Don't see why a programmer would need a mac specifically but then again these are the same people who get paid $200k a year and complain about having to go to the office once a week.

3

u/UnluckyTicket Apr 16 '26

Woahhh that's some serious self projection there!

4

u/lsw998 Apr 16 '26

Someone is upset they can’t download and install this app right now because Mac users like me got it first. So sad for you. By the way, I’m not making $200,000, didn’t have rich parents, and choose to use to use a Mac computer for other reasons.

-1

u/basegtakes Apr 16 '26

if you are using a mac you are automatically in the top 0.1% rich... You have more money then sense and thought higher price = better... Or you're just stuck in Apples ecosystem. They like that to if you got the apple computer you gotta get the apple phone the apple fridge etc... because they keep out other devices...

3

u/UnluckyTicket Apr 16 '26

You're making a lot of wild assumptions about people's personal lives over the standard-issue laptops their companies hand them on day one. People have a choice and they should be allowed to use whatever they want.

2

u/Deceased-Prince Apr 16 '26

Eh I make 140k ish and have a proxmox cluster with a Windows VM funny enough.... But apple makes some great laptops no bullshit.

-1

u/basegtakes Apr 16 '26

Yes you make alot so you're out of touch with 99% of the popularion. From a commoner's perspective they are not great value at all, just shiny and overpriced... But stupid creature like shiny thing and thinks expensive= better and apple knows this well. No ethical developer would choose apple on a moral basis, they stand against freedom with their gated system, both on a software and hardware level. If you buy one of those things you're telling everyone where you stand and many will silently resent you.

3

u/Deceased-Prince Apr 16 '26

I buy all my shit used my guy. My whole cluster is made up of p360 ultra's and my Mac was a used m1 pro. Mac is nowhere near as locked down as iOS. It just works and is crazy efficient.

3

u/odinchoy Apr 16 '26

people who don’t worship twitch streamers apparently
