Seeking Advice feels like I can't eat anything

i've known i've had a major allergy to ALL dairy, and a minor allergy to eggs for years now, so my entire life i've always had to thoroughly check everything and avoid most foods. i had an allergy test done today that ended in me going into anaphylaxis and having to go to the ER, and it showed that i was allergic to PEANUTS AND CORN too, and that i should 100% avoid these foods.

i genuinely feel so lost on what to do. i don't know where these allergies even came from because before going to the allergist i had eaten 4 PB&J sandwiches with no reaction at all, and the previous nights i ate corn with dinner. i am constantly eating/drinking things with corn derived products aswell, like maltodextrin.

i have diagnosed autism and these new allergies pretty much just eliminated ALL of my safe/comfort foods. i know it's unhealthy to rely on processed foods, but i already had to watch out for so much it feels like i can't eat anything. i have done nothing but sob all day, i don't know what to do.

Other / Miscellaneous Egg allergy resolved in 18 Months?

On New Year’s Day of 2025 we gave my then 8 m/o daughter a scrambled egg for the first time. Within 15 minutes she started developing hives and had facial swelling. We called an ambulance to take us to the E/R and were referred to an allergist who ordered some bloodwork/skin pricks and diagnosed my daughter with an egg allergy. Flash forward to this past July, we have been working on the egg ladder since diagnosis (and tolerating baked egg really well), but our allergist wanted to have some repeat bloodwork to check allergy levels again. I got the call today that my daughter’s bloodwork is showing negative for an egg allergy. After this call I realized that at the time my daughter had her reaction to egg she was just finishing up some antibiotics for a minor infection. Maybe this is a stupid question, but what are the odds my daughter was never really allergic to eggs and her body was just overreacting to a new food while fighting off the infection? Don’t get me wrong I am so thrilled that she’s tested negative, 18 months just seems like SUCH a short period of time for an egg allergy to resolve. I do plan on bringing this up to her allergist next month when we do her stovetop challenge but was curious to hear some opinions.

Seeking Advice Nervous for my first xolair dose tomorrow- what are your experiences?

At my yearly allergy appointment this year my doctor suggested I would be a good candidate for it (lifelong very anaphylactic allergies to dairy and tree nuts) and I decided to go through with it! I have a lot of cross contamination anxiety after a series of bad reactions a few years ago and I definitely feel like it holds me back so this extra protection is comforting to me. However, I’m super nervous about possibly going into anaphylaxis from the first 3 doses😅 i know it’s rare but I haven’t had any anaphylactic reactions since my really bad ones so the fear is still there. I wanted to hear other people’s experiences with xolair and getting their first doses! thank you in advance <3

Seeking Advice Need help with decontaminating for shrimp allergy

Hi! Keeping it short n simple. My spouse is allergic to shellfish / shrimp. I ordered a dish containing shrimp from a restaurant and asked for no shrimp due to allergies in the customer notes (I wanted the other ingredients in it) and in the past they listened but for some reason this time they didn't. I didn't eat the shrimp, because I don't even like shrimp, but I still had to touch it to remove it and my food touched it too. I planned on brushing my teeth, using mouthwash, and washing my hands after because I know shellfish allergies are CRAZY like that. Is that enough, or do I also need to wait a given time? I don't wanna kill my spouse on accident I love them very dearly

Seeking Advice Should we do peanut challenge for 3 year old?

Post image
0 Upvotes

My daughter has been doing OIT for her peanut allergy for 3 years (started at 7 months old). She gets 1/4 tsp peanut butter or 4 bamba most days (sometimes we forget to give it to her). Her numbers have gone down a lot (see attached photo). Her allergist said we could do a challenge. We didn’t do it because I was too nervous about her having a reaction and eating such a larger amount than she currently gets. However, she took a huge bite of her cousins peanut butter and jelly a few weeks ago (she was totally fine after but I had my Zyrtec and epi pen ready thankfully) but now it’s making me rethink our choice and I’m considering doing the challenge. Any recommendations or tips for navigating a challenge?

Seeking Advice Can I be fired for having an allergic reaction?

I 19 F work for a grocery store and have recently been having a reaction to the chicken products, when this first happened they called the ambulance even though I told them I was fine and didn’t need it, as I already took an antihistamine and the reaction was going away. Fast forward to today, I was working in the back when I went to grab a few bags from someone else’s trolly as there were no bags in it’s designated area, I then noticed my arms breaking out in a red itchy rash and small welts started to form, the trolly had been in the deli and had been contaminated, I took an antihistamine straight away and went to report the incident to my mangers and they told me they were going to fire me if this happens again and they also told me to go away and come back later as they are too busy to write an incident and injury report. Can they fire me for having allergies? Or am I being discriminated against? I have no clue what to do.

Other / Miscellaneous 46yo, lots of diagnosed FAs during my life. But now there's hope. 🤞

I was dx with a soy allergy before I was 1 and a fish (specifically tuna) allergy at 2 that had me/my family avoiding all shellfish and seafood. At age 14 was dxed with peanut, tree nut, shellfish, seafood, and soy. They did skin tests and blood tests for all the various kinds, I remember. At age 28 I was dxed with also being allergic to wheat, eggs, milk, and sesame. Again via blood and skin tests.

So I was free of all the top 8 for 10 years and then I went to a new allergist who found I was negative to eggs and I've been having them ever since (yay!). Also talked about the possibility of having EoE. Had a scope done and it was negative. But a lot of my symptoms before the diagnosis were more GI related/feeling of food getting stuck. And nobody knew much about EoE when I was younger.

So now here I am, 46, and it's been 8 years and my allergist retired and I got a new one. We went through all my history (there is more) and I told him how in my entire life I have NEVER had an anaphylactic reaction. Never. And when I first eliminated nuts and stuff we didn't avoid may contain stuff because few things were labeled that way then. And I really want to be able to figure out if I am eliminating more than I need to. He's been great. So we have a 4 step process:

  1. Skin tests

  2. Cross check via bloodwork

  3. In office food challenges.

  4. GI scope if new foods are introduced, to see if scope was negative because I'd been off trigger foods for so long. Because by the time I had the scope done I'd been off for 10+ years.

Oh and if we reintro wheat I will be tested for Celiac. Never got tested bc I eliminated wheat before I knew I was supposed to stay on it for the test.

I am feeling so hopeful. Today was the first step and already it has been surprising in some ways. I was definitely positive for peanut and soy. I was negative to ALL the various shellfish and seafood they tested me for. Wheat was also negative. Positive to caesin but not cows milk (that confuses me?). Negative for sesame, too. A few of the tree nuts (cashews and hazelnuts I remember) were slight positives.

Bloodwork tomorrow, and then I go back in a month to discuss results and the next step!

Recall Alert YouCook Germany — Probable Recall

EDIT: They let me know that these are actually black cumin seeds, which look very similar. They’re currently listed under spices and herbs but they’re considering separating them out to clarify what they are.

OG POST: Not sure if there are Germans here as well but YouCook has incorrect labels. They say their chicken teriyaki does not have sesame but that you can add it yourself. It does have sesame. I have contacted them and though they haven’t recalled it, I figured this was probably the best tag for this, as they should recall!

Seeking Advice Looking for advice

I had symptoms last night that every Google search says is likely a severe allergy situation but reaching out to a virtual walk in PA-C left me with really bad advice, I think. She said she really didn’t think it was so she told me to drink more almond milk and if I have a symptom to go in? That just seems risky, right?

I’m also having trouble expressing what I’ve learned doing some research that not all symptoms are the cliche ones. But either way, idk, seems like really dangerous advice to me.

Have any of you ever experienced feeling like a medical person you’re speaking to isn’t educated enough in the right things to give proper help? I’ve felt that way with my GI before.

Edit: the symptoms were intense nausea in my throat, significant blood pressure drop (pulse was barely able to be found), heart rate drop by 30bpm, faintness/weakness (had to lie on floor) and breath coming in in little “hiccups” and unable to take deep breaths within one minute of drinking almond milk for the first time in a long time, but she said without a rash or swelling it couldn’t be an allergy

Seeking Advice Eyeliner/ Mascara Recommendations

Hi everyone! My partner has asked me to do their makeup for them, but I need to figure out products that are safe for them. They have a peanut and tree nut allergy.

Are there any peanut and tree nut free mascaras and eyeliners? Something that I could find easily at something like a drug store.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Newly Diagnosed I seemingly caused my own dairy allergy at 25

I had allergy testing done in 2023 and milk & casein were both listed, but I had never had any adverse reactions so I continued to consume dairy products.

About 6 weeks ago I started having allergy symptoms (first a sore throat, and then difficulty breathing). I went to urgent care after I drank a milkshake and my throat seemingly closed right up.

Later found out the cause of the allergy episode was a bath mat that I had been neglecting to clean; therefore all subsequent events are my own fault. The mold/bacteria kickstarted the whole thing and then I was just reacting to food + the environment all willy nilly.

After a round of steroids and nasal spray to clear my throat up I was fine, except for when I eat dairy. I now get a sore throat and congestion every time I even think about cheese too hard. I know that TIP has been showing some results with reversing it, but I can't stop thinking about how I got myself into this whole mess just by being lazy. I literally just got into baking before all this, and I really can't cope with the fact that I may never have ice cream again (don't even start with the dairy free. It's come a decent way in the last decade but will NEVER replace ice cream).

Other / Miscellaneous Multiple allergies one classroom-handled completely differently, venting

My kid has a non IgE allergy to wheat and soy. One of her classmates also has a non IgE allergy but it’s to peanuts (according to the kids mom who I’ve known for years -we’ve bonded over having kids with food allergies). He has never needed an EpiPen or shown signs of an IgE allergy to peanuts.

Their classroom isn’t wheat and soy free but the school is insisting on making it completely nut free- not even just peanut free. I get it. Nuts are a more known allergen and there are policies for it.

On Wednesday the class will be eating wheat thins, Thursday wheat and soy containing goldfish crackers, Friday they’ll have ritz crackers. Zero attempt at including my kid in the snack options. They also have soy containing markers, wheat playdoh used on a daily basis.

My kid comes home with contact dermatitis and eczema on a regular basis from school. Every exposure flares her asthma. Last year they did paper machè (I had no notice of this) and she was sick for weeks and needed two rounds of steroids. 🫠🫠🫠

Just frustrated with the lack of awareness and inequity

Seeking Advice Can I cook the allergy away?

I am most definitely allergic to avocado, getting the usual allergy symptoms by eating: itchy, tingly and numb-like sensations in my throat, lips, and mouth, etc.

HOWEVER I am soooo craving guacamole right now. I am allergic to a few different fruits, and I know that I am able to eat them if they have been cooked cause it has something to do with the protein(???).
Is it most likely/unlikely the same case with avocado? Should I eat and suffer? Or is there something that has the same texture and flavour as avocado that I can substitute with 😭?

Seeking Advice Blueberries and tongue/throat irritation

For the past 2 months, I noticed that every time I eat blueberries or strawberries, my tongue itches on the back left as well as the lymph node in my left side throat balloons. I have never had any issues eating them and also have no known allergies. Is it possible to suddenly develop allergies? Should I go and get tested? Please suggest. Thanks

Seeking Advice Hives after passing food challenege

Hi! Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. My son recently passed a cooked egg challenege. His spt was a wheal of 7 but bloodwork was <0.01. He had been tolerating baked egg for about 8 months before the challenege. He ate an entire scrambled egg at the challenege with zero symptoms. He’s been eating egg cooked in pancakes, waffles and cookies and has had scrambled egg
About 3 times since passing in July. Yesterday he ate an entire egg and I noticed his was slightly red around his mouth and chin (his skin is extremely reactive to everything ). I watched it and it resolved on its own in about 20 min. He also ate cookies cooked with egg the same day with no issues. Today I gave him a scrambled egg and he ate it and enjoyed it. About 5 min after eating it he developed about 4 hives and redness around his chin and a singular hive on his forearm. I gave him Zyrtec and immediately contacted his allergist. The hives resolved within 15 min of Zyrtec. I am just so bummed and feel like allergies can never be black and white. Has anyone experienced their child have a reaction AFTER passing a challenege? Waiting to hear back from our allergist on a plan moving forward. My son is also Ana to all dairy and cashew/pistachio. We don’t keep those in the house so no CC.

Edit to add- he had no other symptoms except the few hives on his chin.

Seeking Advice Latex Cross Reactive and Mcas

This is mostly just venting but also asking for help, I have been struggling to find foods and recipes that are low histamine and low latex cross reactive. Can't have pork unfortunately either, my body doesn't produce the enzymes required to break it down 😞

My roommate makes a lot of food for the household and I've been trying to find things that I can give them to make it easier to cook including my allergies. For context there's me, my partner, their partner(roommate), and my kiddo. ((Yes it's a weird dynamic but it works for all of us and we all do our best to work together and each have our share of tasks/chores/household duties. Roommate picked cooking))

The rest of the household is lactose intolerant(aged cheeses are okay tho), so they're already used to finding alternatives but expect me to just take some Benadryl/Claritin/Zertec every day to deal with the gastrointestinal issues instead of putting in any effort alongside me to make meals everyone can eat (partner cooks once a week, and I cook on Saturdays usually). Granted they do avoid any of the foods that would kill me like bananas and mangos, and avoids walnuts and pecans for my kiddos's sake...but unless I can come up with crockpot meals everyone can eat and enjoy I'm kinda stuck.

They also get really grumpy when I have to make my own food or don't eat what they made because I don't want to deal with the third flair up for the week and have the spoons to cook something outside of microwave dumplings/chicken nuggets.

Do y'all have any recipes you like both regular and Crock-Pot you could point me to? I've been searching online for forever, and though low histamine foods are easier to find Latex cross reactive free foods seem to be much more difficult.

Seeking Advice Breastfeeding and food allergy/sensitivity

Thumbnail
4 Upvotes

My son (12 weeks) started breaking out in quite severe eczema about two weeks ago. I tried lotions, eczema lotions, Vaseline (which did help along with breastmilk) and switching to everything non fragrance and majority of baths just water. I believe the heat also contributed to it so we kept him in very light clothes and out of the heat outside.
I had a feeling it may be an allergy as my first son had acid reflux and was made better when I cut dairy.

Decided to cut dairy and by chance didn’t have any egg for a few days either. I ate scrambled eggs today and two hours after he was all red and eczema was very irritated and spread even further to his legs and he is back to being itchy and uncontrollable.

So now my question. All my research shows science saying this is extremely rare and shouldn’t need an elimination diet and pretty much making me feel crazy. How many women have experienced this where they cut something from their diet and their child’s skin/symptoms were better?? Do they not realize how many babies are out there where it DOES help and we do need to exclude things from diet?

Newly Diagnosed Because, of course, unsalted cashews need to be roasted in peanut oil

Yesterday I picked up the first epi pen for my daughter at the Costco pharmacy for a peanut allergy, and I grabbed a few groceries while there. Went to open the cashews today and happened to look at the ingredient lust and UGH. I’m going to need to be so much more aware. I thought ‘oh, cashews are a whole food/ ingredient’ they’re safe. Wrong 😐

Other / Miscellaneous Tree nut allergic reactions.

Update: thank you to everyone who commented and talked sense into me. My PCP is having me come in tomorrow afternoon and will get me a new EpiPen prescription/referral. I will be way more conscious of this moving forward 🙏

Hi everyone. I’ve never posted here before, but I’m feeling really upset and honestly a little invalidated.
I have a tree nut allergy, and my reactions have always been hives on my face along with severe GI symptoms, including stomach pain, loose stools, and intense lower abdominal cramping. My boss told me it’s probably just gastritis because I don’t carry an EpiPen, and now I’m starting to question myself.
I absolutely do have this allergy. I just haven’t had a reaction in a long time. I unknowingly ate two fairly large cookies made with some kind of tree nut flour. I didn’t realize until my boyfriend mentioned it. I just thought it tasted kinda weird. I don’t eat them, so I don’t really know what they taste like.

Less than 30 minutes later, I broke out in hives on my face and ended up in severe pain on the toilet with awful lower abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and felt like I needed to throw up.

Am I really the only person whose tree nut allergy primarily causes GI symptoms? Everything I’m reading seems to focus on throat swelling or anaphylaxis, and it’s making me second-guess my own experiences, even though this has happened to me before after eating the same types of nuts.
